  • Background: In this study our aim was to determine the rate of smoking in a sample of psychiatric in-patients with diagnoses of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression and to examine factors related to smoking status and the level of dependence in this population. Materials and Methods: A total of 160 people were included in this descriptive study. 80 were inpatients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression and 80 people without any psychiatric diagnoses were included as a control group. The participants were interviewed face-to face using a semi-structured questionnaire and Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence was used to define smoking habits. Results: The mean age of the participants was $37.24{\pm}12.19$ years ranging from 18 to 81 years, 54.4% of the participants were (n=87) female, and 45.6% cases (n=73) were male. 70% (n=56) of the patients and 55% of the control group were smoking and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.01). Total score of Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence in the patient group was statistically significantly higher than in the control group (p<0.01). Conclusions: In our sample, the frequency of cigarette smoking and nicotine dependence among psychiatric inpatients was high, posing a high risk for smoking related diseases including cancers; therefore there should be counseling on tobacco control and smoking cessation programming targeting this population.

  • Objectives : Internet addiction or pathologic internet use is one of the major mental health problems in children and adolescents in Korea. Internet addiction is defined as uncontrollable, markedly time-consuming internet use, which lasts for a period of at least six months. Internet addiction results in poor academic performance and negative parent-child relationships. By using $^{18}F$-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), we investigated the effects of internet addiction on functional changes occurring in the adolescent brain. Methods : Adolescent patients with an internet addiction (4 boys and 2 girls; $15.6{\pm}1.2$ years) participated in this study. Eight healthy young adults (5 males and 3 females; 18-30 years old) with no previous history of psychiatric illness also participated as normal controls. Brain FDG-PET data was obtained with the participants in the resting condition and with no addictive stimuli. Results : Statistic parametric mapping analysis of the brain FDG-PET data revealed hypometabolic changes in the visual information processing circuits and hypermetabolic changes in the prefrontal areas in the adolescents with internet addiction, as compared with normal controls (p<.001). Conclusion : These results suggest a neuronal adaptation to excessive visual stimulation and synaptic plasticity due to internet addiction.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to review the significance of managing "Mibyeong" in geriatric health in Korean medicine and psychology. Methods: We performed a literature search using OASIS, Koreantk, RISS, DBpia, and PubMed databases. We retrieved research articles using the keywords related to mibyeong (未病), sub-health (亞健康), Korean-medicine, psychology and geriatric health. Results: Both Korean medicine and psychology emphasize biological, psychological, and social balance and well-being. In addition, both value individual personality and constitution. Mibyeong is a Korean medical concept suggesting sub-health. Elderly individuals who are in a state of Mibyeong are frail and vulnerable to disorders and illness. Since depression, chronic diseases, low physical and mental activity have fatal outcomes in frail and elderly subjects, positive psychological support and active management of Mibyeong are very important. Conclusions: Geriatric health conditions are associated with chronic disease and multiple risk factors, including physiological, psychological, social, and economic conditions. A preventive and integrative approach is essential for geriatric health as prevention is better than cure for most geriatric diseases and illnesses.

  • Neuralgia is a disease that involves severe pain and has a very strong effect on the quality of human life, and the prevalence of the disease increases with aging. To date, previous studies on neuralgia were mainly focused on associations with mental illness, demographic information, and nutrients, and studies on association with blood information were very rare. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to examine the association between neuralgia and blood parameters and find clinical indicators related to neuralgia. To analyze the data, we used binary logistic regression based on data of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Our results showed that age tended to have the higher association with neuralgia in both men and women, waist circumference and hematocrit level were associated with neuralgia in women, and fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin levels were associated with neuralgia in men. Also, we found that the association of neuralgia with waist circumference and blood information differed according to gender.

  • In "Lingshu Benshen". five vicera are damaged due to changes in emotion having qi flow opposite to five viscera. As a result, it suggests that mental and physical illness could develop. The content of this piece can be explained in relation to five elements but uniformly through qi's flow. The contents can be summarized as follows. 1. The Heart is fire among the five elements and mainly characterized with dispersing. The flow of its qi is characterized facing upward and outward. On the other hand, being afraid or thinking seriously is characterized by making qi to go downward and stop so that the flow of qi is mainly facing toward inward and downward, damaging the heart. 2. The spleen has the conveyance function and spreads qi. On the other hand, worry and emotion inhibit qi function, blocking qi, damaging the spleen. 3. The liver has dispelling and removing functions and the power of sending up. The qi flow goes toward upward and outward. On the other hand, sadness stagnates qi, preventing the flow of liver's qi, damaging the liver. As a result, work is not done accurately. Madness develops with heat accumulated with qi stagnation. When qi is not sending up, mentality is not clear, leading to forgetfulness. 4. The lung has astringent and sending down functions, lowering qi. On the other hand, happy and joyful emotions bring up qi, showing the opposite flow of qi compared with the lung, damaging the lung. 5. The kidney has closing and storing functions, making qi flow to downward and inward. On the other hand, being angry makes qi to go up. Excessive expression of anger damages the kidney. As a result, the yin function of kidney does not work properly, leading to forgetfulness.

  • Objectives: Hwa-byung is a mental illness. It is also known as a Korean culture-related syndrome. In traditional Korean medicine, Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang is used to treat Hwa-byung related neuropsychiatric symptoms. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang on Hwa-byung. Methods: A multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study was performed for 160 patients with Hwa-byung. Patients were divided into a Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang group and a placebo group. Treatment period was 8 weeks. Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A), Likert scale for major symptoms of Hwa-byung, Hwa-byung Scale (HBS), Korean Beck Depression Inventory (K-BDI), Korean State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (K-STAI), Korean State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (K-STAXI), and Korean WHO Quality of Life Scale Abbreviated Version (WHOQOL-BREF) were used to evaluate the effect of Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang on Hwa-byung. We also used an Instrument of Pattern Identification for Hwa-Byung to evaluate different responses for six patterns of patients. Results: Scores of all the measurements improved significantly for each group, showing no significant differences between the two groups. In the case of deficiency of both Qi and blood pattern, the Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang group showed a significant decrease in the HAM-A score compared to the placebo group. Conclusions: The effect of Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang on Hwa-byung did not exceed that of the placebo. Further studies involving more elaborate pattern identification are needed.

  • Objects : This study is to be applied effectively to the acupuncture treatment for VDT syndrome. Methods : I referred to occidental and oriental medical records. Results and Conclusion : VDT syndrom is the concept focalizing work environment and labor load, and named all that symptoms according to excessive VDT works. The disorders of VDT syndrome is divided into 2 groups with muscaloskeletal disorders and non-musculoskeletal disorders, and non-musculoskeletal disorders is secondly divided into 3 groups with visual disorders, stress disorders and others. The risk factor of VDT syndrome is divided 4 groups with repetitive acts, consistent works, uncomfortable work postures, unprofitable light environments, jobs needs for excessive power and mental or physical fatigues. In oriental medicine area, I apply VDT syndrome to Kyunbitong(jianbeitong, 肩臂痛) to base on similarities of the risk factors and disorders between VDT syndrome and Kyunbitong(jianbeitong, 肩臂痛), that is painful illness on shoulders, arms, hands and fingers. And, Kyunbitong(jianbeitong, 肩臂痛) is divided 3 groups into Susamuhm(shousanyin, 手三陰), Susamyang(shousanyang, 手三陽) and Joktaeyang(zutaiyang, 足太陽) on the ground of meridian. Disorders related to Kyunbitong(jianbeitong, 肩臂痛) is grounded on kyungmaek(Jingmai, 經脈) disorder called sidongbyung(shidongbing, 是動病) and sosaengbyung(suoshengbing, 所生病) and Kyungkeun(Jingjin,經筋) disorder related to Kyunbitong(jianbeitong, 肩臂痛). As a result of this study, there is many similarities between VDT syndrome and Kyunbitong (jianbeitong, 肩臂痛). On acupuncture treatment, VDT syndrome can be applied to Kyunbitong(jianbeitong, 肩臂痛)'s on the basis of meridians, because of similarities of risk factors and disorders between VDT syndrome and Kyunbitong(jienbeitong, 肩臂痛).
