This study was conducted to explore the coping strategy of Korean men in an international marriage. To achieve this purpose, we selected 4 Korean husbands who had married after seeking the services of matchmaking agencies, and we used snowball sampling. The data were collected through in-depth interviews, and analyzed according to the case study research method. It was found that the men considered international marriage to be their second choice instead of the best one. But they considered their marriage to be 'a prepared marriage', not 'a rash marriage.' 'The prepared marriage' allowed them to have realistic expectations, and to become 'tied in wedlock' with 'a good person.' The Korean husbands coped with difficulties and problems through flexible thinking, such as considering 'how the woman acts depends on the man', 'finding a model mentor couple', 'keeping an open mind to each other', 'reinforcing family ties', and 'developing their wife's independent capacity.' Based on the results, practical alternatives for Korean husbands were suggested. Lastly, the limitations of this study were mentioned.
This paper analyzes the effect of marriage subsidy, which was provided by some municipalities of South Korea from 2006, on marriage. Marriage subsidy, targeted for international marriage between Korean men and foreign women, increases the economic incentive for international marriage. Using the Korean marriage record during 2004-2018 and exploiting the variation in marriage subsidy across regions(administrative level 2, si/gun/gu) and years with difference-in-differences method, I find that marriage subsidy significantly increases the probability of a single Korean man marrying a foreign woman. I found no evidence on crowd out effect on marrying a Korean woman, and the effect of subsidy on total marriage was significantly positive. Subgroup analysis shows that the effect of marriage subsidy on international marriage was strongest for the older and high school graduated men.

This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study that analyzed the effect of quality of life on marriage views in college students. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between quality of life and marriage view. The study targets were 195 male and female university students aged between 20 and 25. The data collection was done only by those who voluntarily agreed to the study using online questionnaires, and the data collection period was from October 1 to October 30, 2020. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 18.0 for frequency analysis, χ2 analysis, Pearson correction, t-test, and simple regression analysis. The result of the study that men had higher conservative marriage view (M=3.22, SD=.716) than women (M=2.21, SD=.903, p<0.01), women had higher active marriages (M=3.94, SD=.955) than men (M=3.41, SD=.933, p<0.01), and women had higher exclusive marriage views (M=3.94, SD=.955) than men (M=3.41, SD=.933, p<0.01). And people with high quality of life positively influenced romantic marriage view (R2=.029, p<0.05), but negatively affected passive marriage view (R2=.029, p<0.05) and conservative marriage view (R2=.034, p<0.05). Based on the results of this study, a program is needed to create a positive marriage view for the married age group, create an environment for married people to positively engage in social and economic activities, and propose a program for creating healthy family relationships.
The advancement of information and transportation technologies in the context of economic and cultural globalization facilitates international marriages. However, it is ironic that image and fantasies play a significant role in the actual process of these marriages. Using data from a national survey conducted in 2006 (Survey for the Conjugal Life of the International Marriage Families) this study examines the experiences of Korean men and foreign wives. The findings confirm the negative impacts on marital satisfaction of the spousal image of hypergamy (i.e., imaginings of a high-earning husband and a submissive wife) and abbreviated marriage processes (i.e., broker-mediated marriage and incorrect information about a future spouse), but the detailed patterns differ by gender and by the ethnic origin of the wife. Korean Chinese (and to a lesser extent Han Chinese) wives are more negatively affected by the marriage process and spousal imaginings than are Southeast Asians and 'other' wives. While Southeast Asian wives are more likely to have received incorrect information about their husbands, they show significantly more flexible attitudes toward the marriage and spouses. Unification Church members are excluded from the analysis because their marital lives are distinctive enough to warrant separate research. As previous qualitative findings suggested, some Korean Chinese wives seem to perceive that returnees to the home country deserve an improvement in economic status as opposed to the disappointing reality. Imagining a submissive wife hurts the marital satisfaction of husbands regardless of the ethnic origin of the wife.
This study attempts to review the increasing trend in international marriage of Koreans since 1990 and explore the pattern of socio-demographic characteristics of the married couples. This paper develops a conceptual scheme for changing pattern of nuptiality including an increase in international marriage. As the key forces behind the recent increase in international marriage of Koreans, the effects of rapid decline in fertility, rise in sex ratio at birth, urbanward migration of young women, expansion of gender-equity norms, and globalization are stressed. Micro-data from the marriage registration for the period $1990{\sim}2004$ and the divorce registration for the period $2000{\sim}2004$ are utilized. This study focuses on analyzing age at marriage, previous marital experience, education, occupation, and residence of the married couples. Attention is also focused on demographic characteristics of the divorced couples. Results of analyses reveal that there exists a great deal of diversity in international marriage of Koreans. A notable aspect is the profound differences between Korean men and women in the characteristics of their foreign spouses and themselves as well. Another prominent factor emphasized in the analysis is the nationality of foreign spouse. It is indicated that the stereotype of international marriage facilitated by marriage squeeze can be mainly applied to marriages between Korean men and foreign wives from China, southeast Asian countries and the CIS of the old Soviet Union. On the other hand, direct effects of value transformation and globalization are emphasized in the explanation of marriages between Korean men and foreign wives from more developed countries as well as marriages between Korean women and foreign husbands.
The aim of this paper is to examine the demographic characteristics and the attitude about marriage and the policy of the unmarried male farmers. The contents of research are two folds: 1) Analyze the marriage related demographic statistics of rural area using the data from Korea Statistical Information System and marriage statistics in 2007, 2) survey analyses of the attitude toward marriage, perception and needs of international marriage, and related policies from data of 170 unmarried male farmers. The results are as follows: first, the marriage rates among over 15 years old of the rural area is 78.2% for men while 1.8% for 20${\sim}$24 age group and 9.3% for 25${\sim}$29 age group. The marriage rates in this area are varied by region especially low in Kyunggido & Jejudo. Second, the portion of international marriages of Korean male farmers with foreign partner are 11% among all international marriages of Korean males. There are high rates of male farmers' international marriage in Junranamdo and Kyungsangbukdo which are characterized by low level of urbanization, low inter-city mobility, low rates of age group of under 15 years and high portion of over age 65. Finally, the survey results showed that 83% of the sample lived with their parents; event though 80% of farmers think marriage is necessary, 60% had no plan of marriage because of difficulties to meet marriage partners and of lacking economic resources; they showed a negative perception toward the handicapped, foreigners, Afro-Americans, Westerners and divorcees as a marriage partner; they also showed negative recognition to international marriage because of observed problems of neighboring international marriage couples and concerns of cultural differences; they pointed out that the government's concern about improving quality of the environment of the rural area and reforming the international marriage aid law was the most necessary. The discussion and the future research directions were added.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between marital satisfaction and the quality of life for women and men who live in a rural area in Korea through an international marriage. Methods: A descriptive correlational research design was used. Ninety-one women and 56 men were surveyed from May 1st., 2007 to April 6th., 2008. Data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and Fisher's exact test. Two types of questionnaires were used: Marital satisfaction scale (MSS) and WHO quality of life-brief (WHOQOL-BREF). Result: There is a gap between men's age and women's in the average of their marriage ; 37 vs 24. In addition, men's marital satisfaction was much higher than women's (t =2.16, p=.032) and quality of life was also higher than women's (t=-0.85, p=.005). According to this survey, therefore, it has been shown that there is a positive correlation between marital satisfaction and the quality of life (r =.435, p<.001). Conclusion: In order to improve the quality of life, marital satisfaction should be promoted by practical family nursing programs and it is necessary for the internationally married women to be continuously provided with language education and cultural awareness.

This study was cross sectional descriptive survey study to analysis the relationship between marriage value view and health promotion behavior among university students. Questionnaires from those who voluntary agreed to the study were collected online, and the collection period was from May 20, 2020 to June 10, 2020. Research tools for analyzing marriage value view was used by RR lee, and health promotion behavior research tools was developed by Walker., The data analysis was performed using SPSS 18.0 as frequency, Pearson correlation, t-test, and Multiple regression analysis. According to the analysis, women had high passive (p<0.05) and exclusive (p<0.01) marriage value view, while men had high active (p<0.01) and instrumental (p<0.05) marriage value view. According to the analysis, it turns out that people who value interpersonal relationships during health promotion have a positive effect on romantic (t=2.383, R2=.257, p=.019) and instrumental (t=2.201, R2=.120, p=.030) marriage value view. Hygiene has been appeared to affect Passive marriage value view (t=3.001, R2=.111, p=.003) and Exclusive marriage value view (t=3.765, R2=.122, p=.000). Nutrition has been appeared to affect conservative marriage value view (t=2.086, R2=.118, p=0.039). Exercise has been appeared to affect conservative marriage value view (t=2.456, R2=.118, p=0.015) and active marriage value view (t=2.261, R2=.168, p=0.025). Through this study, in order to increase for the desire of marriage, marriage values need to be organized differently between men and women in marriage value programs and it suggested that health promotion behavior be included in programs that enhance the value of marriage.
This study looks into their process to wedding for Vietnamese brides and the motives of their marriage of whom are living in rural areas near an urban city, and the difficulties of their living in Korea. The mist significant motive of their marriage for the Vietnamese brides if financial reasons. They also think that Korean men are well-off and reliable and that the men's occupations or the age are any matter to be considered. As for the Korean men married to Vietnamese brides, the mist significant motive of their marriage is that Vietnamese brides are considered to be good-natured hardworking, sincere and respectful of the elderly. The wedding process usually takes place in 5-6 days through matchmaking, and the background of their Korean man gets inflated by their matchmaking agency. Some of the most significant difficulties for their life in Korea are due to the language barrier, their husbands' incompetence for a living, conceptions before the young brides get adjusted to Korean living. Most significant support networks are their husbands/families, and their neighbors, relatives and friends that can share Korean cultures and Vietnamese cultures with them. At last, the local communities should continuously offer them educational opportunities for Korean language and social/ cultural understanding.
The purposes of this study were to investigate Korean men that chose international marriage in terms of motivations, relationships with their spouses in terms of content and process, and quality changes by approaching them in a biography research method, as well as to look into the world of their specific experiences. Ten Korean men in international marriage participated in the study. In-depth interviews with them generated plenty of data. The analysis results of the data indicate that the instrumental nature was strong as for their motivation to marry a woman of a different nationality. They maintained partner relationships with their spouses until the exchange values became equal between them, when tension and conflicts started to happen. The ways they reacted to the crisis determined whether their marital relationships would continue or end. Most of the subjects that succeeded in maintaining their marital relationships deconstructed their own culture, reorganized it at the contact points with the culture of their spouses, and then moved to a new diaspora. The research implications emphasize an academic need to regard female marriage immigrants as a neo-diaspora in the global age. And suggestions were made as to intercultural education.
