  • This work highlights extraction and removal of Lignosulfonate using sunflower oil-Tri-n-octylamine (TOA) system in bulk liquid membrane transport. Maximum extraction and recovery percentages of 92.4% and 75.2% were achieved. Optimum manifold operating conditions were: 4 vol.% TOA, $2{\pm}0.1$ feed phase pH, 300 rpm stirring speed, at $40^{\circ}C$ with 0.2 (M) $Na_2SO_4$ solution. 1:2 (organic/aqueous) and 1:1 (aqueous/aqueous) phase ratios produced best results. Extraction (36.85 kJ/mol) was found to be intermediate controlled and stripping (54.79 kJ/mol) was chemical reaction controlled. Kinetic estimation of data with higher rate constants for stripping vis-${\grave{a}}$-vis extraction showed latter to be rate determining.

  • The D2EHPA/TBP co-extractants immobilized PolyHIPE membrane can be used for the selective separation of Mn (II) from Co (II). By solvent-nonsolvent method, D2EHPA/TBP co-extractants can be effectively immobilized into PolyHIPE membrane. The pore structure of PolyHIPE membrane and the presence of TBP enhance the stability of immobilized co-extractants. The optimal operating conditions for the separation of Mn (II) and Co (II) are feeding phase at pH 5.5, sulfuric acid concentration in the stripping phase of about 50 g/L and stirring speed at 400 rpm. The D2EHPA/TBP co-extractants ratio of 5:1 shows synergetic effect on Mn/Co separation factor about 22.74. The removal rate and recovery rate of Mn (II) is about 98.4 and 97.1%, respectively, while for Co (II) the transport efficiency is insignificant. The kinetic study of Mn (II) transport shows that high initial flux, $J_f^o=80.1({\mu}mol/m^2s)$, and maxima stripping flux, $J_s^{max}=20.8({\mu}mol/m^2s)$, can be achieved with D2EHPA/TBP co-extractants immobilized PolyHIPE membrane. The stability and reusability study shows that the membrane can maintain a long term performance with high efficiency. High purity of Co (II) and Mn (II) can be recovered from the feeding phase and stripping phase, respectively.

  • The initial co-transport and counter-transport permeate transport characteristics of calcium ion at epithelial cell membrane model in parathyroid which irradiated by high energy x-ray(linac 6 MV) was investigated. The epithelial cell membrane model used in this experiment was a polysulfonated copolymerized membrane of poly(PS-DVB: polystyrene-divinylbenzene). The difference of sorbed water in membrane, fixed carrier concentration(SO32-), initial pH value, OH- concentration were occurred at difference of Ca2+concentration and quantity of parathyroid hormone, respectively. The initial co-transport and counter-transport permeate flux of Cl-, OH-, Ca2+ on fixed carrier concentration(SO32-) and initial pH value of irradiated membrane was found to be decreased than non-irradiated membrane. The initial co-transport and counter-transport permeate flux of Ca2+ on fixed carrier concentration (SO32-), initial pH value, OH- concentration in irradiated membrane were found to be decreased about 2.68 ~ 6.87 times, about 1.42 ~ 1.63 times, about 2.07 ~ 1.672 times than non-irradiated membrane, respectively. As a result, the quantity of parathyroid hormone was decreased at irradiated membrane than non-irradiated membrane. The decrease of parathyroid hormone was occurred at hypoparathyroidism and osteoporosis, parathyroiditis, and so on. As the parathyroid hormone in epithelial cell membrane model were abnormal, cell damages were appeared at cell.

  • Electrodialysis of acetic acid was studied to find out the trend of the transport of organic acids through ultrafiltration and ion exchange membranes. The net transport rate of acetic acid was determined from the electro-migration velocity relative to the electro-osmotic flow rate through the membrane. Electro-osmosis flows through ultrafiltration membranes were from the anodic side to the cathodic side in the presence of electric field. The surface of ultrafiltration membrane was measured by the electro-osmotic flow to be charged negatively. Different transport behaviors of acetic acid were found with the ultrafiltration membranes of different materials. In general, regenerated cellulose membranes (YM series) were more effective than polysulfone membranes (PM series) for the transport of acetic acid. The transport of acetic acid was affected by electric strength, distance between the electrodes, surface area of electrode, temperature, and pore size of membrane. The transport rate through the ion exchange membrane was 1.5 to 3 times of those through the ultrafiltration membranes at the constant current of 150 mA in the experimental ranges. The transport rate of acetic acid through the ion exchange membrane increased by 10% with a pulse electric field of 10 sec/hr.

  • As a novel water treatment membrane, concept of ceramic-based graphene membrane (CbGM) was suggested, and its mass transport behavior was investigated. The selectivity of CbGM was given by graphene material which is consisting of active layer, only transmitting water, but rejecting salts. Filtration-assisted assembly methods was employed as a facile method to fabricate CbGM. Surface morphology and characteristics of CbGM were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle. In addition, three different kinds of solutes (i.e., NaCl, $MgCl_2$, $Na_2SO_4$) were tested in batch forward osmosis system to confirm the mass transport behavior. Through surface morphology analysis and mass transport behavior, it was revealed that interlocking between graphene layers is very important, rather than thickness of laminated graphene layers, in terms of selectivity to CbGM. All the anions in each solute showed faster transport than those of cations. In addition, solutes which have high ion valence charge ratio of anion to cation ($Z^-/Z^+$) was easier to be passed through CbGM. It indirectly implied that the surface charge of CbGM appear to be positive. In addition, It showed that surface charge of CbGM has a great role on mass transport, in particular, transport of matter having charges, generally ions.

  • The transport phenomena of alkali metal chlorides through poly(2 hydroxyethyl methacrylate) hydrogel membrane have been studied using electrodialysis. The hydrogel membranes were prepared by the polymerization of 2-hydroxvethyl methacrylate in the presence of 45%(V/V) H2O and ethyleneglycodimethacrylate. The initiator used in the polymerization was azobismethylisobutyrate (AMIB) prepared from azobisiobtyronitrile (AIBN) using Mortimer method. The permeability of alkali metal chlorides such LiCl, NaCl and KCI at 50 voltage was obtained. The permeability of NaCl was also observed at 30, 40, 50, and 60 voltages respectively. The concentration of solutes permeated through the membrane was measurer by flame photometry. The experimental results have been discussed with the comparison of apparent solute molecular size, the self-diffusion coefficient of solutes, the transport number of cations in aqueous solution. These indic aloes that poly(2 hydroxyethyl methacrylate) hydrogel membrane shows a specific selectivity for sodium ion.

  • This work focuses on the application of nanofiltration (NF) to the concentration of a pharmaceutical product, Clavulanate ($CA^-$), from clarified fermentation broths, which show a complex composition with six main identified ions ($K^+$, $Cl^-$, ${NH_4}^+$, $H_2{PO_4}^-$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and $CA^-$), glucose and glycerol. The solutes transport through the NF membrane pores was investigated using the SEDE (Steric, Electric and Dielectric Exclusion) model. This model was applied to predict the rejection rates of the initial feed solution and the final concentrated solution (10-fold concentrated solution). The best results were achieved with a single fitted parameter, ${\varepsilon}_p$ (the dielectric constant of the solution inside pores) and considering that the membrane selectivity is governed by steric, electric (Donnan) and Born dielectric exclusion mechanisms. While the predicted intrinsic rejections of solutions comprising up to six ions and uncharged solutes were in good agreement with the experimental values, the deviations were much larger for the 10-fold concentrated solution.

  • The poly(vinyl alcohol) $(PVA)/AgCF_3SO_3/Al(NO_3)_3$ electrolyte membrane was fabricated to prepare for highly permeable facilitated olefin transport membrane, compared with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) $(PVP)/AgCF_3SO_3/Al(NO_3)_3$ complex. In order to examine the characteristics of $PVA/AgCF_3SO_3/Al(NO_3)_3$ membrane, we used the analytical methods such as SEM, FT-IR, and FT-Raman. The best separation performance was observed at the mole ratio of 1 : 1 : 0.01 $PVA/AgCF_3SO_3/Al(NO_3)_3$ among various $Al(NO_3)_3$ concentration. As a result, the selectivity was 12 and mixed-gas permeability was 3.5 Barrer. Furthermore, the selectivity and permeability remained constant for up to 115 h.

  • The poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/Ag Nanoparticles (NPs)/7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) membrane was fabricated to obtain highly permeable facilitated olefin transport nanocomposite membrane, compared with PEO/Ag NPs/p-Benzoquinone (p-BQ) membrane. Polymer matrix, PEO and silver nanoparticle precursor $AgBF_4$ were fixed at 1 : 0.4 mole ratio and electron acceptor TCNQ content was controlled variously. And the best olefin separation performance was obtained at 1/0.4/0.004 mole ratio, and long-term separation performance was measured at this ratio. As a result, mixed-gas permeance decreased from 23 to 6 GPU, and selectivity decreased from 6 to 2 (propylene/propane) after 32 hours.

  • The performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is seriously changed by the humidification condition which is intrinsic characteristics of the PEMFC. Typically, the humidification of fuel cell is carried out with internal or external humidifier. A membrane humidifier is applied to the external humidification of residential power generation fuel cell due to its convenience and high performance. In this study, a simple static model is constructed to understand the physical phenomena of the membrane humidifier in terms of geometric parameters and operating parameters. The model utilizes the concept of shell and tube heat exchanger but the model is also able to estimate the mass transport through the membrane. Model is constructed with FORTRAN under Matlab/$Simulink^{(R)}$ $\Box$environment to keep consistency with other components model which we already developed. Results shows that the humidity of wet gas and membrane thickness are critical parameters to improve the performance of the humidifier.
