Cake layer in crossflow microfiltration(CFMF) can be reduced by coagulation, enhancing membrane flux. This is because enlarging particle size by coagulation increases shear-induced diffusivity and the back-transport of rejected particles. However it is known that the enlarged particles are disaggregated by the shear force of the pump while passing through it. This study is to look at the disaggregation in relation with cake layer reducation. Kaolin and polysulfon hollow fiber microfilter are used for experiment. The reduction of cake resistance by coagulation is observed in a range of 17% to 53% at the various coagulation conditions. The particle size analysis results of the experiments show that aggregated particles in feed are completely disaggregated by pump but re-aggregation of particles occurs in membrane. This suggestes that the re-aggregation of particles is critical to cake reduction and flux enhancement, since the aggregated particles are completely broken. The mechanisms for re-aggregation in membrane are the same with those for coagulation in feed tank. Charge neutralization is better for CCFMF than sweep flocculation although it has two drawbacks in operation.
Low-pressure membrane filtration is increasingly used for tertiary treatment of wastewater effluent organic matter (EfOM), mainly comprising organic base/neutral compounds. In-line coagulation with underdosing, charge neutralization, and sweep floc conditions prior to ultrafiltration (UF) was studied to determine removals of the EfOM components and consequent reduction of fouling using polyethersulfone membranes. Coagulation and UF substantially reduced fouling for all coagulation conditions while removing from 7 to 38% of EfOM organic acids. From 7 to 16% of EfOM organic base/neutrals were removed at neutral pH but there was no significant removal for slightly acid coagulation conditions even though fouling was substantially reduced. Sweep floc produced the lowest resistance to filtration but may be inappropriate for in-line use due to the large added volume of solids. Charge-neutralization resulted in poor recovery of the initial flux with hydraulic cleaning. Under-dosing paralleled sweep floc in reducing hydraulic resistance to filtration (for sub-critical flux) and the initial flux was also easily recovered with hydraulic cleaning. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic base/neutrals were identified on the fouled membranes but as previously reported the extent of fouling was not correlated with accumulation of organic base/neutrals.

The permselectivity of alkali metal chlorides through silk fibroin membrane was investigated at $25^{\circ}C$: The Permeability coefficients were found to increase in a sequence of LiCl < NaCl < KCl < CsCl. This sequence was explained by considering the partition and the hydrophilic membrane. The dependence of the permeability on the salts concentration was interpreted by means of TMS theory. The ionic mobility ratio of alkali metal chlorides through this membrane decreased with the increase of the Stokes radius. The Effectiveness of the charged density was found to depend on the ionic species. The greater the Stokes radius the larger the effective charge density of membrane.

Morphology of membrane affects its performance [1]. For a constant amount of fixed charges, the distribution of these charges is also significant to its performance (2). In some ionomer membranes such as Nafion, the membrane fixed charge is not randomly distributed, but occurs in clusters. Thus, the membrane solution is phase-separated, with the ion clusters, acting as inverted micelles in a polymer solvent.(omitted)

Inactivation properties of Ca current in the unfertilized eggs of mouse were studied by using the whole cell voltage clamp technique and single microelectrode voltage clamp technique. Membrane potential was held at -80 mV and step depolarization was applied from -50 mV to 50 mV for $200{\sim}500\;ms$. Peak of inward Ca currents was $-2{\sim}-4\;nA$ at a membrane Potentials from -20 mV to 0 mV and outward currents were not observed within the membrane voltage range studied $(-50{\sim}50\;mV)$. Inward currents were fully inactivated within 200 ms after the onset of step depolarization. As the membrane became depolarized, time constant of inactivation (${\tau}$) was decreased but remained around $20{\sim}30\;ms$ beyond 10 mV. When $Ca^{2+}$ was used as a charge earlier, inactivation of inward $Ca^{2+}$ current also occured and time course of inactivation was similar to that of $Ca^{2+}$ currents as charge carrier. In the bathing solution containing high potassium $(131\;mM\;K^+)$, process of inactivation was not changed except a parallel decrease of value for the entire range of membrane potential. Steady-state inactivation of the $current(h_{\infty})$ obtained from the double pulse experiment showed the voltage-dependent change. These results suggested that inactivation of Ca currents in the unfertilized eggs of mouse was voltage-dependent.
In this study, we have developed pore-filled ion-exchange membranes (PFIEMs) filled with ionomer in a thin polyethylene porous film (thickness = $25{\mu}m$) and investigated the charge-discharge characteristics of the all vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) employing them. Especially, the degree of crosslinking and free volume of the PFIEMs were appropriately controlled to produce ion-exchange membranes exhibiting both the low membrane resistance and low vanadium permeability by mixing crosslinking agents having different molecular size. As a result, the prepared PFIEMs exhibited excellent electrochemical properties which are comparable to those of the commercial membranes. Also, it was confirmed through the experiments of vanadium ion permeability and VRFB performance evaluation that the PFIEMs showed low vanadium ion permeability and high charge-discharge efficiency in comparison with the commercial membrane despite their thin film thickness.

It is a highly important problem for mankind to supply sufficient energy, which has been connected to production and supply of electricity. In terms of the problems, this study fabricated a new sort of solid polymer electrolyte membrane for supercapacitors. The fabricated electrolyte employed grafting poly(oxyethylene methacrylate) (POEM) side chain on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) main chain by free-radical polymerization. It is the first time to utilize PVA-g-POEM graft copolymer as an electrolyte membrane for supercapacitor. The chain behavior of PVA was transformed by grafting POEM side chains, which was analyzed by FT-IR spectra. Also, the capacitance performances of fabricated supercapacitors were explored by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD), and ragone plot. We suggest a new point, the grafting of the electrolyte of supercapacitor in this study.

Polymer exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells have multifunctional properties, and bipolar plates are one of the key components in these fuel cells. Generally, a bipolar plate has a gas flow path for hydrogen and oxygen liberated at the anode and cathode, respectively. In this study, the influence of iodine applied to a bipolar plate was investigated. Accordingly, we compared bipolar plates with and without iodine coating, and the performances of these plates were evaluated under operating conditions of $75^{\circ}C$ and 100% relative humidity. The membrane and platinum-carbon layer were affected by the iodine-coated bipolar plate. Bipolar plates coated with iodine and a membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) were investigated by electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. Polarization curves showed that the performance of a coated bipolar plate is approximately 19% higher than that of a plate without coating. Moreover, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis revealed that charge transfer resistance and membrane resistance decreased with the influence of the iodine charge transfer complex for fuel cells on the performance.

This study aims to investigate the mechanism of action of the cinnamon bark essential oil (CB), when used singly and also in combination with piperacillin, for its antimicrobial and synergistic activity against beta-lactamase TEM-1 plasmid-conferred Escherichia coli J53 R1. Viable count of bacteria for this combination of essential oil and antibiotic showed a complete killing profile at 20 h and further confirmed its synergistic effect by reducing the bacteria cell numbers. Analysis on the stability of treated cultures for cell membrane permeability by CB when tested against sodium dodecyl sulfate revealed that the bacterial cell membrane was disrupted by the essential oil. Scanning electron microscopy observation and bacterial surface charge measurement also revealed that CB causes irreversible membrane damage and reduces the bacterial surface charge. In addition, bioluminescence expression of Escherichia coli [pSB1075] and E. coli [pSB401] by CB showed reduction, indicating the possibility of the presence of quorum sensing (QS) inhibitors. Gas-chromatography and mass spectrometry of the essential oil of Cinnamomum verum showed that trans-cinnamaldehyde (72.81%), benzyl alcohol (12.5%), and eugenol (6.57%) were the major components in the essential oil. From this study, CB has the potential to reverse E. coli J53 R1 resistance to piperacillin through two pathways; modification in the permeability of the outer membrane or bacterial QS inhibition.
In this research, the application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) membrane was tested as a simply and beginning attempt to overcome membrane fouling because CNTs importantly affect the transport of natural organic matter (NOM). Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) as the representative of NOM was selected and its sorption results with single-walled CNT (SWCNT), multi-walled CNT (MWCNT), and oxidized MWCNT (O-MWCNT) were obtained through the batch experiment. SRFA sorption isotherms had a strong nonlinearity and its sorption capacity followed the order O-MWCNT < MWCNT < SWCNT. The adsorbed mass of SRFA on each CNT decreased as a function of pH due to their charge repulsion. For the CNT-PVDF membrane filtration experiments, the suspended CNT solution (10 mg/40 mL) was incorporated into $0.45{\mu}m$-PVDF membrane and 5 mg/L of SRFA solution was monitored using UV detector connected with high pressure pump after passing through CNT-PVDF membrane. The SRFA removal efficiency by MWCNT-PVDF membrane was the strongest among other modified membranes. This suggests that the CNT modified microfiltration (MF) membrane might effectively and selectively apply to treat the contaminated water including organic compounds in the presence of NOM.
