  • To investigate the performance of the composite carbon electrodes which the ion exchange polymers were directly casted onto porous carbon electrode surfaces, the adsorption/desorption experiments were carried out by varying the feed concentration, feed flow rate, and desorption voltages for the NaCl solution. When the feed concentration was 100 mg/L, the increase of the adsorption time led to the increase of the salt removal due to the increase of the residence time inside the cell while the increase of the feed flow rate from 15 mL/min to 23 mL/min gave the decrease of the salt removal efficiency, 12% because of the short residence time. When the feed concentration was 200 mg/L, the salt removal was shown 10~15% low because of the incomplete desorption within the desorption intervals.

  • In this study, the 10 stages stacked module was designed by increasing the number of unit cells in the membrane capacitive deionization(MCDI) process. The aminated polysulfone and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) were synthesized and coated on porous carbon electrode by casting method. The salt removal efficiency was measured for the 10 stage stacked module under the operation conditions of adsorption voltage and time, desorption voltage and time, flow rate and concentration of feed water, and di-valent solutions including $CaSO_4$, $MgCl_2$ and tap water. Typically, when 100 mg/L of NaCl as the feed was used, the salt removal efficiency was 98.3% at a flow rate of 100 mL/min, the adsorption condition of 1.2 V/3 min and desorption condition of -0.5 V/5 min.

  • In this study, we have developed cation-exchange membranes (CEMs) which can efficiently separate heavy-metal ions among the cations contained in a water system. Sulfonated polyetheretherketone (SPEEK) was used as a base polymer and a powdered chelating resin with strong binding ability to heavy-metal ions was added into it. In order to optimize the performance of the CEM, the content of chelating resin powder and the ion exchange capacity of SPEEK have been controlled. As a result, it was confirmed that the removal efficiency of heavy metal ion was improved by more than 20% by applying the CEM to membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI).

  • Crosslinking of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) anion exchange membranes, which can be used for capacitive deionization (CDI), was investigated. PPO Anion exchange polymer was prepared through bromination and amination reaction steps and crosslinked with bisphenol A diglycidylether (BADGE), m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA), and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA). The gelation time by crosslinking was short in the order of HMDA > m-PDA > BADGE. The anion exchange membranes crosslinked at room temperature over a certain amount of crosslinking agent did not dissolve in an aprotic solvent such as 1-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and the chemical durability of their membranes to organic solvent increased. The ion exchange capacity and water uptake of anion exchange membranes crosslinked with different crosslinker (BADGE) contents were measured and compared. The CDI performance of the crosslinked PPO anion exchange membrane immersed in the HMDA solution was almost the same as that of the non - crosslinked membrane except for the initial stage of the adsorption step.

  • In this study, the heterogeneous ion exchange membranes prepared by the combination of the carbon electrode and mixed the cation and anion exchange polymers and polyvinylidene fluoride as the basic polymer together were made to recognize the efficiency of the salt removal for the application of the membrane capacitive deionization process. The mixing weight ratio of the solvent, basic polymer and ion exchange resin was 7 : 2 : 1 and this mixed solution was directly cast on the electrode. As for the operating conditions of the adsorption voltage and time, feed flow rate, desorption voltage and time of the feed solution NaCl 100 mg/L, the salt removal efficiencies (SRE) were measured. Apart from this NaCl, the $CaCl_2$ and $MgSO_4$ solutions were investigated in terms of SRE as well. Typically, SRE for NaCl 100 mg/L solution under the conditions of adsorption voltage/time, 1.5 V/3 min, desorption voltage/time -0.1 V/3 min, was shown 98%. And for the $CaCl_2$ and $MgSO_4$ solutions, the SREs of 70 and 59% were measured under the conditions of adsorption voltage/time, 1.2 V/3 min, desorption voltage/time -0.5 V/5 min, respectively.

  • Recently, various researches have been studied, such as water treatment, water reuse, and seawater desalination using CDI (Capacitive deionization) technology. Also, applications like MCDI (Membrane capacitive deionization), FCDI (Flow-capacitive deionization), and hybrid CDI have been actively studied. This study tried to investigate various factors by an experiment on the TDS (Total dissolved solids) removal characteristics using MCDI module in aqueous solution. As a result of the TDS concentration of feed water from 500 to 2,000 mg/L, the MCDI cell broke through faster when the higher TDS concentration. In the case of TDS concentration according to the various flow rate, 100 mL/min was stable. In addition, there was no significant difference in the desorption efficiency according to the TDS concentration and method of backwash water used for desorption. As a result of using concentrated water for desorption, stable adsorption efficiency was shown. In the case of the MCDI module, the ions of the bulk solution which is escaped from the MCDI cell to the spacer during the desorption process are more important than the concentration of ions during desorption. Therefore, the MCDI process can get a larger amount of treated water than the CDI process. Also, prepare a plan that can be operated insensitive to the TDS concentration of backwash water for desorption.

  • In this study, we suggest conditions to reduce fouling in capacitive deionization (CDI) caused by alginic acid sodium salt, one of the most common fouling-causing substances in natural water and wastewater management. First, NaCl is used as feed material, which is selected as the control of the experiment. As expected, fouling phenomena is not observed from NaCl. On the other hand, when alginic acid sodium salt is added to the inlet, the fouling phenomena can be observed. In order to minimize the fouling phenomena, the feed concentration of alginic acid sodium salt, applied potential during desorption process, and duration of applied potential to our CDI cell are controlled. With 7 mg/L of feed stream concentration, CDI performed using 1.2 V for 1 min during adsorption followed by desorption with -2 V for 1 min exhibited the highest alginic acid salt removal efficiency reaching 50.07%.

  • To desalinate the aqueous solutions with high salt concentration using the capacitive deionization technology, two resin/membrane capacitive deionization(RMCDI) cells were fabricated by filling mixed ion exchange resins in two different flow channels (spacer and spiral type). The salt removal efficiency of the spacer- and spiral-RMCDI was 77.21 and 99.94%, respectively. Many ions were significantly removed in a spiral RMCDI cell because the feed solution could be more evenly contacted with the ion exchange resins filled on the spiral type flow channel. As the result of the changes of pH and accumulative charges, it was observed that Faradaic reaction was diminished for a spiral RMCDI cell filled by the mixture of cation and anion exchange resins. Therefore, the desalination of the aqueous solutions with high salt concentration by the capacitive deionization technology was proven. In addition, further studies on the optimization of the mixing ratio with ion exchange resins and the introduction of the regeneration process generally occurred in the continuous electrodeionization (CEDI) technology are required to improve the RMCDI technology.

  • Desalination experiments were carried out with two types of cell configuration; a CDI cell constructed with carbon electrodes only and a membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) cell having a cation-exchange membrane on the cathode surface. The salt removal rate and desalination efficiencies increased linearly with increasing the cell potential. Although the same carbon electrodes were used in the desalination experiments, the MCDI cell showed higher salt removal efficiency than that of the CDI cell. The amount of salt removal for the MCDI cell was enhanced by 33.1~135% compared to the CDI cell, depending on the applied cell potential in the range of 0.8~1.2 V. In addition, the current efficiency for the MCDI cell was about 80%, whereas the efficiency was under 40% for the CDI cell. The higher salt removal efficiency in the MCDI cell was attributed to the fact that ions were selectively transported between the electric double layer and the bulk solution in the MCDI cell configuration.

  • In this study, the carbon electrodes using activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were prepared for the capacitive deionization process. The Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used as the binder and the mixed ACFs with proper solvent was cast on the commercial graphite sheets to prepare the carbon electrodes. At this moment, the different particle sizes of ACFs were applied and the mixing ratio of solvent, PVDF and ACFs, 80 : 2 : 18 and 80 : 5 : 15, were used for the electrode preparation. Then their salt removal efficiencies were characterized under the various operating conditions, adsorption potential and time, desorption potential and time, concentration of feed NaCl solution and flow rate as well. Typically, the salt removal efficiency of 53.6% were obtained at the particle size below $32{\mu}m$, mixing ratio 80 : 2 : 18, adsorption 1.2 V and 3 min, desorption -0.1V and 1 min, and 15 mL/min flow rate of NaCl 100 mg/L.
