Methods : We selected the five key factors that the source, the name of formula, the efficacy, the constituent herbs, and the capacity of herbs. When we compared between two formulae with five key factors, there was 32 cases. So we investigated the example which is corresponded to each cases and analyzed the relationship of formulae. Results : Among the 32 cases, analyzed two formulae was same in 8 cases, altered from same formula in different ways in 14 cases, and different with each other in 20 cases. Conclusions : These five key factors play a decisive role to comparing formulae and analyzing the relationship of them. • Objectives : We applied the term weighting method used in the field of data search to quantify relevancy between symptoms and medicinal herbs, and, based on this, we aim to introduce a method of visualizing the characteristics of medicinal herbs. Methods : We proposed HF-IFF, an adaptation of TF-IDF, which is a term weighting measurement method adapted in the field of data search. Using this method, we deduced relevancy between symptoms and medicinal herbs In Cheongkangeuigam that was published in 1984 by organizing the medical theory of Cheongkang, Kim Younghoon, and visualized this as a graph in order to compare the characteristics of medicinal herbs used for different symptoms. Results : HF-IFF is the product of HF and IFF, where HF is the frequency of the relevant medicinal herb for a set of symptoms, and IFF is the inverse of the number of formulations (FF) containing that herb. A total of 251 types of medicinal herb are used in Cheongkangeuigam, and 1538 formulations are classified according to 67 types of symptom. The overall mean for HF-IFF was 0.491, with a maximum of 4.566 and a minimum of 0.013. Conclusions : In spite of several limitations, we were able to use HF-IFF to measure relevancy between symptoms and medicinal herbs, with formulations as an intermediate. We were able to use the quantified results to visually express the characteristics of the herbs used for symptoms by bubble chart and word-cloud from HF-IFF.

  • Objectives : Medical treating with eating foods is one of important therapies in East Asian traditional medical knowledge and is referred as a therapy to treat diseases through foods. Since the food cannot be separated from ordinary people living, the medical treating with eating foods is a therapy with strong locality and contains many autogenous parts. Methods : Recently, the world is showing much interest for genetic resources, and the concept of intellectual property is rapidly expanding as the field of 'new knowledge property right' as well. Thus, the knowledge of medical treating with eating foods recently draws much attention in the economic aspect beyond the scholarly interest for traditional medicine. Here, I would like to summarize and report the contents related to medical treating with eating foods on "Yi, SeikKan experience prescriptions" which was discovered before. Results & Conclusions : First, medical treating with eating porridge on "Yi, SeikKan experience prescriptions" is classified into one with nonglutinous rice as the main ingredient and the other with other grains as the main ingredient. It is differently utilized depending on the nature of the grain. Second, medical treating with eating rice on "Yi, SeikKan experience prescriptions" was born from our nation's unique way of living and is classified into one way to eat rice mixed with ground medicinal herbs, another one to cook and eat rice with mixed grains and the other way to use as the external application. Medical treating with eating rice is assumed to replace the meal. Third, "food section" was given separately and discussed in this book. There were some parts different from existing medical knowledge due to the accumulation of experience using medicinal herbs. Fourth, we should pay attention to experience a book on medicine where vibrant medical information has been recorded in order to discover and process our traditional knowledge resources as a useful form.

  • In addition to our previous study on the diseases and symptoms described in Juan Wooden Slips(居延漢簡), here we focused on therapeutics of Juan Wooden Slips, including herbal medicines, acupuncture, and moxibution. In Juan Wooden Slips, there are 36 species of medicinal herbs and 17 herbal prescriptions. Among the medicinal herbs, 75% of herbs were also used in Shanghanzabing-lun(傷寒雜病論). In terms of efficacy and therapeutic range of the medicinal herbs and prescriptions, Juan Wooden Slips is very similar to Shanghanzabing-lun. In addition, acupuncture were used as a combined with moxibution or herbal remedies similarly to Shanghanzabing-lun. Thus, we suggest that the medical thoughts and technologies shown in Juan Wooden Slips might influence on the establishment of Shanghanzabing-lun.
