  • This paper presents a transient noise reduction system in a speech signal. The proposed transient noise reduction system utilizes a median filter to reduce the transient noise. Since the median filter can distort speech during the noise reduction, a long-term prediction (LTP) filter is adopted as a pre-processor to minimize speech distortion. The speech information preserved by the LTP filter is re-synthesized after reducing the noise. This paper verifies the weakness of a linear prediction (LP) filter and the superiority of the LTP filter for preserving the speech component in transient noise presence environment. Applying the proposed system, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of output is improved by 8dB in both speech and noise presence region, and PESQ score is increased by 1 point comparing with noisy input.

  • This paper proposes an enhanced motion estimation that is one of core parts affecting the coding performance and visual quality in video coding. Although the full search technique, which is the most basic method of the motion estimation, presents the best visual quality, its computational complexity is great, since the search procedures to find the best matched block with each block in the current frame are carried out for all points inside the search area. Thus, various fast algorithms to reduce the computational complexity and maintain good visual quality have been proposed. The PMVFAST adopted the MPEG-4 visual standard produces the visual quality near that by the full search technique with the reduced computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a new motion vector prediction method using median processing. The proposed method reduces the computational complexity for the motion estimation significantly. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is faster than the PMVFAST and better than the full search in terms of search speed and average PSNR, respectively.

  • In mobile radio communication, propagation paths are time or spacial varying because of the motion of mobile unit. The propagation path loss not only involves frequency and distance but also the antenna height at both the base station and the mobile unit, terrain configuration, and the man made en- vironment. Thhese additional factors make the prediction of propagation path loss of mobile radio signals more difficult. In this paper, it is measured field strenght of mobile radio signals in Daejeon and Seoul area, also calculated local median, 500m sample mean, and stadard deviation. As the result of analysis, it can be seen that propagation path loss of measured data is similiar to predicted field strength, especially local median is dependent upon base antenna height, terrain configuration and the man-made environment. The standard deviation has been noted to lie between 2 and 10 dBuV.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict the defibrillation success of a ventricular Fibrillation ECG signal using time-frequency analysis. During CPR, coronary perfusion pressure and electrocardiogram were measured. Parameters extracted from time-frequency domain were served as predictor of resuscitation success. Time frequency distribution(TFD) of ECG signals was estimated from the smoothed pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution(SPWVD). Median frequency, peak frequency, 1/f slope, frequency band ratios$(2{\sim}4Hz,\;4{\sim}6Hz,\;6{\sim}8Hz,\;8{\sim}10Hz,\;10{\sim}12Hz,\;12{\sim}15Hz)$ were extracted from each TFD as function of time. Paired t-test was used to determine the differences in ROSC and non-ROSC groups. In the statistical results, we selected four significant parameters - median frequency, 1/f slope, $2{\sim}4Hz$ band ratio, $8{\sim}10Hz$ band ratio. We made an attempt to predict defibrillation success by combining features extracted from time frequency distribution. Independent t-test was used to determine the differences ROSC and non-ROSC groups. Consequently, we selected four significant parameters-median frequency, 1/f slope, $2{\sim}4Hz$ band ratio, $8{\sim}10Hz$ band ratio. The relationship between coronary perfusion pressure and ECG parameters was analyzed with linear regression analysis. R-square value was 55%. 1/f slope and $8{\sim}10Hz$ band ratio had the significant relationship with coronary perfusion pressure.

  • Motion Estimation (ME) is a core part of most Video compression systems since it affects directly the output video quality and the encoding time. The most basic method of ME, Full Search (FS) gives the highest visual quality but also has the problem of significant computational load. To solve this problem, many fast algorithm has been proposed. Among them, MVFAST and PMVFAST show impressive results in video quality and the computational load by using the correlation between motion vectors of adjacent blocks. In particular, PMVFAST reduces search points dramatically and also gives very high video quality by using the median predictor. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm that uses the redefined median predictor which reduces the number of search points and yields a high visual quality by reducing the number of thresholds and early termination conditions.

  • Fatigue fracture in machine components is produced by surface micro-crack from stress concentration area such as notch and material defect. It is difficult to predict the remaining fatigue lift of mechanical components because the surface micro-crack on critical area initiates and grows with statistical distribution. Plane bending fatigue tests were carried out on the plain specimen of Al 2024-T3 and the initiation and growth behavior of surface micro cracks were observed. The statistical distribution of surface length of multiple micro cracks and their maximum length were investigated. The maximum surface crack length distributions were analyzed on the basis of the statistics of extremes in order to examine the prediction of remaining life.

  • Spring drought forecasting in South Korea is essential due to the sknewness of rainfall which could lead to water shortage especially in spring when managed without prediction. Therefore, drought forecasting over South Korea was performed in the current study by thoroughly searching appropriate predictors from the lagged global climate variable, mean sea level pressure(MSLP), specifically in winter season for forecasting time lag. The target predictand defined as accumulated spring precipitation(ASP) was driven by the median of 93 weather stations in South Korea. Then, it was found that a number of points of the MSLP data were significantly cross-correlated with the ASP, and the points with high correlation were regionally grouped. The grouped variables with three regions: the Arctic Ocean (R1), South Pacific (R2), and South Africa (R3) were determined. The generalized linear model(GLM) was further applied for skewed marginal distribution in drought prediction. It was shown that the applied GLM presents reasonable performance in forecasting ASP. The results concluded that the presented regionalization of the climate variable, MSLP can be a good alternative in forecasting spring drought.

  • The characteristics of the rock cleavage inherent in Jurassic granite from Geochang were analysed. The phases of distribution of microcrack spacings were derived from the enlarged photomicrographs(${\times}6.7$) of the thin section. The evaluation for the six directions of rock cleavages was performed using nine parameters such as (1) frequency of microcrack spacing(N), (2) frequency ratio(${\leq}1mm$ and 4 mm >) to total spacing frequency(N:191), (3) spacing ratio(${\leq}1mm$) to total spacing(118.49 mm), (4) mean spacing($S_{mean}$), (5) difference value($S_{mean}-S_{median}$) between mean spacing and median spacing($S_{median}$), (6) density of spacing, (7) median spacing, (8) reduction ratio of spacing frequency to length frequency and (9) magnitude of exponent(${\lambda}$ and b) related to the distribution type of diagram. Especially the close dependence between the above spacing parameters and the parameters from the spacing-cumulative frequency diagrams was derived. The results of correlation analysis between the values of parameters for three rock cleavages and those for three planes are as follows. The values of (I) parameters(1, 2 and 3), (II) parameters(4, 5 and 6), (III) parameter(7), (IV) parameter(8) and (V) parameter(9) show the various orders of H(hardway, H1+H2) < G(grain, G1+G2) < R(rift, R1+R2), R < G < H, R < H < G, G < H < R and H < G < R, respectively. On the contrary, the values of the above four groups(I~IV) of parameters for three planes show reverse orders. This type of correlation analysis is useful for discriminating three quarrying planes. Six spacing-cumulative frequency diagrams were arranged in increasing order on the value of main parameter($S_{mean}-S_{median}$). These diagrams show an order of R2 < R1 < G2 < G1 < H2 < H1 from the related chart. In other words, the above six diagrams can be summarized in order of rift(R1+R2) < grain(G1+G2) < hardway(H1+H2). These results indicate a relative magnitude of rock cleavage related to microcrack spacing. Especially, the above main parameter could provide advanced information for prediction the order of arrangement among the diagrams.

  • In this paper, a new prediction based embedded compression (EC) codec algorithm for the JPEG2000 encoder system is proposed to reduce excessive memory requirements. The EC technique can reduce the 50 % memory requirement for intermediate low-frequency coefficients during multiple discrete wavelet transform (DWT) stages compared with direct implementation of the DWT engine of this paper. The LOCO-I predictor and MAP are widely used in many lossless picture compression codec. The proposed EC algorithm use these predictor which are very simple but surprisingly effective. The predictive EC scheme adopts a forward adaptive quantization and fixed length coding to encoding the prediction error. Simulation results show that our LOCO-I and MAP based EC codecs present only PSNR degradation of 0.48 and 0.26 dB in average, respectively. The proposed algorithm improves the average PSNR by 1.39 dB compared to the previous work in [9].

  • The Compressive Video Sensing (CVS) is a useful technology for wireless systems requiring simple encoders but handling more complex decoders, and its rate-distortion performance is highly affected by the quantization of measurements and reconstruction of video frame, which motivates us to presents the Space-Time Quantization (ST-Q) and Motion-Aligned Reconstruction (MA-R) in this paper to both improve the performance of CVS system. The ST-Q removes the space-time redundancy in the measurement vector to reduce the amount of bits required to encode the video frame, and it also guarantees a low quantization error due to the fact that the high frequency of small values close to zero in the predictive residuals limits the intensity of quantizing noise. The MA-R constructs the Multi-Hypothesis (MH) matrix by selecting the temporal neighbors along the motion trajectory of current to-be-reconstructed block to improve the accuracy of prediction, and besides it reduces the computational complexity of motion estimation by the extraction of static area and 3-D Recursive Search (3DRS). Extensive experiments validate that the significant improvements is achieved by ST-Q in the rate-distortion as compared with the existing quantization methods, and the MA-R improves both the objective and the subjective quality of the reconstructed video frame. Combined with ST-Q and MA-R, the CVS system obtains a significant rate-distortion performance gain when compared with the existing CS-based video codecs.
