  • The effects of fiber surface-treatment and sizing on the dynamic mechanical properties of unidirectional and 2-directional carbon fiber/nylon 6 composites by means of dynamic mechanical analysis have been investigated in the present study. The interlaminar shear strengths of 2-directional carbon/nylon 6 composites sized with various thermosetting and thermoplastic resins are also measured using a short-beam shear test method. The result suggests that different surface-treatment levels onto carbon fibers may influence the storage modulus and tan ${\delta}$ behavior of carbon/nylon 6 composites, reflecting somewhat change of the stiffness and the interfacial adhesion of the composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis and short-beam shear test results indicate that appropriate use of a sizing material upon carbon fiber composite processing may contribute to enhancing the interfacial and/or interlaminar properties of woven carbon fabric/nylon 6 composites, depending on their resin characteristics and processing temperature.

  • In recent work, we reported that a hot-rolled Fe-18wt%Mn alloy exhibited high damping capacity as well as excellent mechanical properties. It was also proposed that damping capacity of the alloy was proportional to the ${\gamma}/{\varepsilon}$ boundary area. In the present study, the effects of homogenization(12hrs at $1100^{\circ}C$) and solution treatment(1hr at $1050^{\circ}C$ before air cooling) on damping capacity and mechanical properties were investigated for as-cast and heat treated Fe-18wt%Mn alloy. The specimen subjected to both homogenization and solution treatment was found to show superior damping capacity and mechanical properties to the as-cast state due to removal of segregation and increase in ${\gamma}/{\varepsilon}$ boundary area.

  • Super duplex stainless steel has along life in severe environments because of its strength and corrosion resistance. If 0.2$\sim$0.3% Nitrogen in aninterstitial solid solution is added, the austenite structure is reinforced. This improves the solid solution hardening and the anticorrosionability. In this study, the mechanical properties and structures of the super duplex stainless steel with the 0.2% N additive were investigated to determine the effect of various volume fractions on the austenite phase. The various volume fractions and distributions of the austenite structure in the applied test specimens were obtained by changing the heat treatment temperature and cycle. The characteristics by amounts of the $\sigma$ phase obtained from the precipitation heat treatment were alsoinvestigated. From the results, when the austenite volume fraction increases, the tensile strength decreases and elongation increases. And the $\sigma$ phase was rapidly increased by increasing the heat treatment time. When the volume fraction of the $\sigma$ phase increased, tensile strength increased.

  • In the molten state, magnesium alloys vigousey react with oxygen in the air, is protected from oxidation and burning by the addition of $SF_6$ to $CO_2$ atmosphere over the melt. The mechanical properties and metallographic examinatin have made of Mg-Al alloys containing 3, 6, 9% in the solution treated state and precipitated state, comparing mechanical properties obtained during unidirectional solidification with me chanical properties obtained during conventional casting. For a given solution treatment, a higher aluminum contents produce more or less fine grains in conventional casting. For a given artifical aging treatment, a higher aluminum contents produces much precitates at the grain boundary as well as within the grain in unidirectional solidification. As a result of this experiment, for a given heat treatment, the higher is aluminum contents the higher is the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, hardness while the lower the elongation. Also the mechanical properties of unidirectional solidification is larger than that of conventional casting.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of spherodizing heat treatment holding time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the accelerated cooling-treated API X70 steel, which is mainly used as a structural material for line pipe steel for natural gas pipes. The accelerated cooling-treated API X70 steel was spherodizing treated at 700℃ for 12~48 h. The microstructure was observed using an OM and a FEG-SEM, and mechanical properties were obtained by tensile test. The microstructure of the API X70 steel was banded in the hot rolling direction, and the polygonal ferrite(PF) adjacent to pearlite(P) has mainly a fine size, and coarse PF and fine acicular ferrite were formed in the middle of P and P. As the spherodizing treatment time increased, the number of carbide particles decreased and its distribution interval increased, and the ferrite grain size was coarsened. The tensile strength decreased and the ductility increased with spherodizing treatment time, and the yield point elongation was disappeared in a stress-strain curve after the spherodizing treatment.

  • Recently, the necessity of designing and applying tool materials that perform machining of difficult-to-cut materials in a cryogenic treatment where demand is increasing. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of cryogenically treated WC-5 wt% NbC hard materials fabricated by a pulsed current activated sintering process. The densely consolidated specimens are cryogenically exposed to liquid nitrogen for 6, 12, and 24 h. All cryogenically treated samples exhibit compressive stress in the sintered body compared with the untreated sample. Furthermore, a change in the lattice constant leads to compressive stress in the specimens, which improves their mechanical performance. The cryogenically treated samples exhibit significant improvement in mechanical properties, with a 10.5 % increase in Vickers hardness and a 60 % decrease in the rupture strength compared with the untreated samples. However, deep cryogenic treatment of over 24 h deteriorates the mechanical properties indicating that excessive treatment causes tensile stress in the specimens. Therefore, the cryogenic treatment time should be controlled precisely to obtain mechanically enhanced hard materials.

  • Objective: The term "weekend effect" refers to an increase in the mortality rate for hospitalizations occurring on weekends versus weekdays. In this study, we investigated whether such an effect exists in patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (currently the standard treatment for this condition) at a single center in Japan. Methods: We surveyed 151 patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (75 and 76 patients were treated during daytime and nighttime, respectively) from January 2019 to June 2021. The items evaluated in this analysis were the rate of modified Rankin Scale ≤2 or prestroke scale, mortality, and procedural treatment time. Results: The rates of modified Rankin Scale ≤2 or prestroke scale and mortality at 90 days after treatment did not differ significantly between daytime and nighttime (41.3% vs. 29.0%, p=0.11; 14.7% vs. 11.8%, p=0.61, respectively). The door-to-groin time tended to be shorter during daytime versus nighttime (57 [IQR: 42.5-70] min vs. 70 [IQR: 55-82]) min, p=0.0507). Conclusions: This study did not reveal differences in treatment outcome between daytime and nighttime in patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion. Therefore, the "weekend effect" was not observed in our institution.

  • In this study, the effect of solution treatment temperature on the tensile property in intermediate thermo-mechanical treated Al-Li alloys are investigated. After the intermediate thermo-mechanical treated Al-Li, Al-Li-Mg and Al-Li-Mg-Zr alloys were solution treated at various temperatures (500, 520 and $540^{\circ}C$), these were aged at $190^{\circ}C$, $240^{\circ}C$ and tested tensile properties. The results obtained from the experiment are as follows ; 1) The optimum solution heat-treatment temperature is $540^{\circ}C$ for a Al-Li alloy, and the recrystallized grain size is about $70{\mu}m$. 2) The optimum solution heat-treatment temperature is $500^{\circ}C$ for a Al-Li-Mg alloy, and the recrystallized grain size is the most coarse in all alloys. 3) The tensile property is independent of the solution treatment temperature in a Al-Li-Mg-Zr alloy, and the recrystallized grain size is the finest owing to addition of Zr.

  • This study compared the mechanical properties of bamboo fiber composites and kenaf fiber composites through physical treatment (ultrasonic treatment). Kenaf, a composite of PP reinforced with bamboo fiber, was made using injection molding technology. PP was used as a binder and the ultrasonic treatment time of bamboo and kenaf was increased by 30 minutes to compare and study various mechanical properties of bamboo and kenaf composites through physical treatment. Interfacial properties such as internal cracks and internal structure of the wave cross section were confirmed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result of the ultrasonic treatment, most of the characteristics were fragile as the ultrasonic treatment time was increased, and it was confirmed that the natural characteristics of the twisted fibers had a great influence on the characteristics of the composite material.

  • To improve the physical properties of OCC (Old Corrugated Container) fibers, we used the mechanical pre-treatment on the fibers before refining . The mechanical action in the Hobart mixer induced high shear and compression on the fibers, which resulted in changes of fiber internal structure, and microcompressions on the surface of the fibers. We evaluated the amount of mechanical treatment on the fibers by fiber curl index for convenience. Four different refining techniques were applied to the pre-treated fibers (valley beater, Kady mill, PFI mill, and Impact refining) to find the best combination of the pre-treatment and the refining methods. Conclusions were summarized as followed. 1. Mechanical pre-treatment in Hobart mixer for more than 1 hour caused the increase of curl index of OCC fibers, and increased breaking length, burst index, and tear index the handsheets more than 10 % in this experiment. 2. Kady mill and PFI mill refining were effective in keeping fiber length from shortening Kady mill and Valley beater refining straightened out the fiber curls, and reduced the curl index. 3. Valley beating reduced fiber length very fast and generated fines more than other refining methods. 4. To increase breaking length and burst strength while keeping tear strength , combination of mechanical pre-treatment and Valley beating were most effective.
