  • This paper presents the FEM analysis on the contact behavior characteristics of mechanical face seals in a small hydro-power turbine. Especially, the axial displacement and contact normal stress between a seal ring and a seal seat of a primary sealing unit have been analyzed as functions of rotating speed of a hydro-turbine, sealing gap, water and cooling fluid temperature. Those are strongly related to a leakage of water and wear between a seal ring and a seal seat. The FEM computed results present that the rotating speed of a hydro-turbine may be kept less than 800 rpm, and the sealing gap in a primary sealing unit is restricted $0.5\~5$. The coolant temperature in which is most influential parameter to the contact behaviors of a sealing unit may be kept less than $15^{\circ}C$ for a safe operation of a sealing unit without a leakage and wear.

  • The equations are derived for the evaluation of the axial contact force. The contact forces for rubber seals are analyzed as a function of the ratio of real contact length, the thickness of seal lip, the inclined angle of seal lip, and the interference between the edge of seal lip and the rotating inner ring. The design data for rubber seals are presented in terms of the ratio of real contact length, initial inclined lip angle, lip thickness and the interference. The calculated results show that the deflected interference and the circumferential stress cause considerable change of contcat forces for the low sealed pressure.

  • A bearing is one of core parts in automobile. Rubber seal of the bearing is important to improve performance of bearing, formed by hot-press die of rubber seal for the intricate shape. In this study, formed tools are used to machine die of bearing rubber seal and the machining operation is classified into the several process of high precision. Design of experiments is used to optimize selection of the formed tools for the efficient machining of the hot-press die. The cutting force, tool wear and tool life are determined to characteristics. And, the clearance angle, the rake angle and the length cutting edge are considered as the major factors. Experiments are repeated to use one-way factorial design, and tool life is predicted by regression model.

  • In this paper, the mechanical movement of lip seal-ring which plays the most important function in stern-tube sealing system and the possibility of leakage caused by pressure fluctuation are studied by theory and experiment. By the finite element method for axial symmetry object which receives the torsional bending load, the displacement and stress analysis of the seal-rings are executed for products of several representative manufacturers of seal-rings, and also the possibility of crack occurance are checked by theoretical analysis. A sample seal-ring id designed and manufactured using the program of displacement and stress analysis developed in this study and made an experimental apparatus to test the sampling seal-ring. The sampling seal-ring functioned excellently, but it had its durability and this problem may be solved by using the Viton instead of NBR.

  • The existing compressor steel seal used in automotive air-conditioner has the problem of oil leakage and deterioration in shielding performance, due to the abrasion and corrosion of the material. A new type of polymer resin seal studied in this research has the characteristics of high anti-abrasiveness and anti-corrosiveness, which can oversome the defects of the steel seal. In addition, the seal needs lower manufacturing cost and is appropriate to mass production, because it is made by the injection molding method requiring no mechanical processing. The profile generation program for seal mold has been developed using the gradient method, and the molding characteristics of the seal have analyzed through the flow analysis and the warpage analysis. The program has been verified by comparing the analysis results with the measured data of the test product. The research might be said to provide the basic method to produce the polymer resin seals with various types and dimensions.

  • Elastomeric seals are widely used in dynamic seal applications, and it is well known that the sealing surfaces can be gradually worn out. Abrasive wear is known to be the most dominant factor; however, little research has been carried out on this problem until now. In this study, a new contact problem related to elastomeric seals-a small spherical particle and steel surface-was modeled and analyzed using MARC. Variations of von-Mises and residual stress distributions as well as deformed seal and steel surface shapes with seal materials and interferences are presented. The stress distribution and surface deformation are highly affected by the elastic properties of seal. For PTFE, the maximum von-Mises stress exceeds the yield strength, and plastic deformation occurs on the steel surface. Therefore, the sealing surface can also be worn down by sub-surface fatigue due to intervening hard particles in the sealing surfaces together with the well-known abrasion.

  • A rubber seal for wheel bearing which has been mainly applied to car wheel supporting device is required to have both high sealing performance and drag torque. Because of severe operational conditions like infiltration of mud or splashed water, the importance of rubber seal which is aimed for leakage prevention of grease and effective blocking of foreign substances has been increasing continuously. The sealing performance of this seal depends on several factors such as materials of seal, friction conditions of contact regions and geometry of seals and so on. We have focused on the effects of geometric characteristics such as the angle of main lip, interference between lip edge and inner metallic ring. In this study, the optimization of geometric variables was performed using the finite element analysis. For the sake of finite element analysis, uniaxial tensile tests were conducted and several constants for Mooney-Rivlin's equation were obtained. According to the results of this study, mock-up bearing was made. To verify this study, drag torque and mud spray test were preformed.

  • A mechanical face seal is most commonly used to seal liquids and gases at various speeds, pressures and temperatures. The primary seal ring is in sliding contact with the seal seat and as a result heat in the vicinity of the interface is generated. Local temperatures at points along the circumferential direction will fluctuate as asperities on the surfaces pass. This kind of fluctuation of temperature has been investigated to take place. This may lead to the hot spots phenomenon between the contacting asperities. Sibley and Allen showed photographic evidence of systemically moving hot spots in the contact zone. The appearance of such a temperature disturbance has been attributed to a kind of thermoelastic instabilities between two surfaces: This involves a feedback loop which comprises localized elevation of frictional heating, resultant localized thermal bulding, localized pressure increase as the result of the bulging and futher elevation of frictional heating as the result of the pressure increase. The heating of hot spots will be continued until the expanded material due to the frictional heating is worn off. Therefore to predict the speed of temperature propagation into the body is essential to the analysis of heat transfer on the edge of the seal.

  • In many dynamic seals such as lip seal and compression packings, it is well known that wear occur at the surface of heat treated steel shaft as results of the intervened wear particle. It is widely understood that the dominant wear mechanism related in sealing surfaces is abrasive wear. However, little analytical and experimental studies about this problems have been done until now. In this paper, a contact analysis is carried out using MARC to investigate the wear mechanism in contact seal applications considering elastomeric seal, a elastic perfect-plastic micro-spherical particle and steel surface. Deformed seal shapes, contact and von-Mises stress distributions for various particle sizes and interference are showed. The maximum von-Mises stress within steel shaft was exceeded its yield strength and plastic deformation occurred at steel surface. Therefore, the sealing surface can be also worn by sub-surface fatigue due to wear particles together with well known abrasion. The numerical methods and models used in this paper can be applied in design of dynamic sealing systems, and further intensive studies are required.
