In this study, a parametric study is performed to investigate the squeal noise of an automobile water pump. The squeal noise studied in this paper is generated by the self-excited torsional resonance of the rotating shaft, and this noise is related to the stick-slip phenomenon of the mechanical seal in the water pump. The mechanical seal friction has the characteristics of the negative velocity-gradient. The equations of motion of multiple-degree-of-freedom torsional vibration model is constructed by the Holzer's method and then the equation is transformed to an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom torsional resonance simulation model. A squeal noise criteria is determined by the simulation model to perform the parametric study. The design parameters(the mass moment of inertia of the pulley, the mass moment of inertia of the impeller, the length of the shafts, the radius of the shafts, spinning speed of the shafts, the position of the mechanical seal, radius of the mechanical seal, and normal load of the mechanical seal) are investigated to confirm the stability for the squeal noise.

In this paper, a three elastic body sliding contact problem is modeled to investigate more precise wear mechanisms related with the sealing surface. A 3-D finite element contact model, a small spherical elastic particle, PTFE seal and steel surface, is solved using a nonlinear finite element code MARC. The deformed seal and steel surface shapes, von-Mises and principal stress distributions are obtained for different seal sliding distances. The entrapped small particle within PTFE seal results in very high stresses on the steel surface which exceeded its yield strength and produce plastic deformation such as groove and torus. The sealing surface could also be worn down by sub-surface fatigue due to intervening small particles together with the well-known abrasive wear. Therefore the proposed contact model adopted in this paper can be applied in design of various sealing systems, and further studies are required.
An angled labyrinth seal is used for the diaphragm-packing-ring seal design of steam turbine due to its leakage reduction characteristic. CFD analysis using FLUENT has been performed to predict leakage and determine an optimum slanted angle which yields the best leakage reduction. Results show that the optimum value of slanted angle is $-30^{\circ}$ independent of number of labyrinth teeth, inlet pressure, and tooth height to pitch ratio. 3D CFD analysis has been performed for predicting leakage of the angled labyrinth seal. Comparing with the result of 2D CFD analysis, 3D CFD analysis shows 1.4% smaller.
The analysis of lateral hydrodynamic forces in the leakage path between a shrouded pump impeller through wear-ring seal and its housing is presented. Governing equations are derived based on Bulk-flow and Hirs' turbulent lubrication model. By using a perturbation analysis and a numerical integration method, governing equations are solved to yield leakage and rotordynamic coefficients of force developed by the impeller shroud and wear-ring seal. The variation of rotordynamic coefficients of pump impeller shroud and wear-ring seal is analyzed as parameters of rotor speed, pressure difference, shroud clearance, wear-ring seal clearance, and circumferential velocity at the entrance of impeller shroud for a typical multi-stage centrifugal pump.
The purpose of this study is to investigate geometric effect on the contact stress at a lip seal. The geometries of interest were angle, thickness of lip seal and width of contact surface. The contact stress was calculated by using a coupled thermo-mechanical analysis method. The friction thermal load between lip seal and sleeve was adopted to design load. Based on the FEA results, design variables for controlling the maximum contact stress at the lip seal were identified.
The mechanical seals, which are installed in rotating machines like pump and compressor, are gengrally used as sealing devices in the many fields of industries. The failure of mechanical seals such as leakage, fast and severe wear, excessive torque, and squeaking results in big problems. To monitor the failure of mechanical seals and to propose the proper monitoring techniques with artificial neural network, sliding wear experiments were conducted. Torque and temperature of the mechanical seals were measured during experiments. Optical microstructure was observed for the wear processing after every 10 minute sliding at rotation speed of 1750 rpm and scanning electron microscopy was also observed. During the experiment, the variation of torque and temperature that meant an abnormal phenomenon, was observed. That experimental data recorded were applied to the developed monitoring system with artificial neural network. This study concludes that torque and temperature of mechanical seals wil be used to identify and to monitor the condition of sliding motion of mechanical seals. An availability to monitor the mechanical seal failure with artificial neural network was confirmed.
An automatic mooring system for a ship consists of a vacuum suction pad and a mechanical part, enabling quick and safe mooring of a ship. In the development of a mooring system, the design of a vacuum suction pad is a key to secure enough mooring forces and achieve stable operation of a mooring system. In the vacuum suction pad, properly designing its rubber seal determines the performance of the suction pad. Therefore, it is necessary to appropriately design the rubber seal for maintaining a high-vacuum condition inside the pad as well as achieving its mechanical robustness for long-time use. Finite element analysis for the design of the rubber seal requires the use of an appropriate strain energy function model to accurately simulate mechanical behavior of the rubber seal material. In this study, we conducted simple uniaxial tensile testing of Chloroprene Rubber (CR) to explore the strain energy function model best-fitted to its experimentally measured engineering strain-stress curves depending on various temperature environments. This study elucidates the temperature-dependent mechanical behaviors of CR and will be foundational to design rubber seal for an automatic mooring system under various temperature conditions.
