While the pavement design is based on mechanical property such dynamic elastic modulus, the quality of highway subgrade during construction is controled by the optimum moisture content(OMC) and maximum dry density(${\gamma}$$\_$dmax/). However, since the quality control based on the OMC and maximum dry density does not consider the mechanical characteristics, there is a conceptional gap between design and PMS(pavement management system). Therefore, it is necessary to develope a new qualify control system using mechanical property for highway construction in more rational way. To achieve this goal, it is planned to perform various laboratory tests to collect mechanical properties of subgrade soil samples from several highway construction sites and to propose the relationship between dry unit weight (or OMC) and mechanical parameters. In this paper, the experimental data so far obtained are presented and analyzed. In addition, further research plan is presented and discussed.
There have been growing concerns about whether proper measures are in place to ensure the delivery of quality services and the operations in research and educational institutions. This paper describes various quality models and discusses their relevance into the total quality concepts and quality management systems (QMS) in education. It then illustrates how a QMS and the accompanied quality manual be developed in a research and educational institution using the Centre for Enterprise Research Integration (ERI) at The University of the West Indies, Trinidad as a case. Through personal interviews with the $Centre{\square}s$ personnel, views on the operations and determinants of the QMS were acquired. Results showed that the people's resistance to changes, conflicts on academic freedom, and difficulties on measuring performance were the obstacles to QMS implementation. People involvement and proper communication are determinants of QMS implementation. The system also rests on having a tailored quality manual that entails the documentation of processes and procedures for ascertaining the delivery of quality services and operations in the Centre. The development of quality manual is briefly described in the paper.

As the plasma facing material in the nuclear fusion reactor, tungsten has to bear the irradiation impact of high energy particles. The surface quality of tungsten may affect its irradiation resistance, and even affect the service life of fusion reactor. In this paper, tungsten samples with different surface quality were polished by mechanical processing, subsequently conducted by D2+ implantation and thermal desorption. D2+ implantation was performed at room temperature (RT) with the irradiation dose of 1 × 1021 D2+/m2 by 5 keV D2+ ions, and thermal desorption spectroscopy measurements were done from RT to 900 K. In addition, He irradiation was also performed by 50 eV He+ ions energy with the fluxes of 5.5 × 1021 m-2s-1 and 1.5 × 1022 m-2s-1, respectively. Results reveal that the hydrogen/helium irradiation behavior are both related to surface quality. Samples with high surface quality has superior D2+ retention behavior with less D2 retained after implantation. However, such samples are more likely to generate fuzzes on the surface after helium irradiation. Different morphologies (smooth, wavy, pyramids) after helium irradiation also demonstrates that the surface morphology is related to tungsten crystallographic orientation.
We propose a method for evaluating sound quality quantitatively to develop high-level home appliances (HA). Generally, a refrigerator has diverse movable parts such as slider, drawer, and folding shelf. Therefore, an engineering treatment to control the noise quality is considered as one of key technologies for a higher level refrigerator. Among the movable parts, we have selected a folding shelf as an example, which is commonly setup inside of a home refrigerator for increasing space convenience, to control the noise quality. However, it is known that its noise level is very high comparing to other movable parts when folding or unfolding actions. In order to evaluate and compare the noise quality, we have tested different eighteen models, and have suggested an impact sound quality index (ISQI) based on subjective evaluation data obtained experimentally by thirty two evaluators. The ISQI was formulated using three sound quality elements (noise peak, raising time, impact duration) to determine psycho-acoustic properties. Through this work, we developed an evaluating process and ISQI that was verified the usefulness by comparing the test results of personal perceptions given by evaluators with the prediction value of ISQI. We showed a good relations between them, so we believe that the proposed method and ISQI can be utilized to control of the noise quality of HA effectively.
The ride quality investigation is on-going topic in the car industry since its global standard has not evaluated and it is difficult to point out one part that hinders the ride quality. Since the traditional transfer path analysis that is widely used in car industry to investigate the ride quality requires a lot of test time to process the full data so that there are problems to conduct in industry. Based on these disadvantages, new approaches have developed such as OPAX(operational path analysis with eXogeneous inputs) and OTPA(operational transfer path analysis) for last decades. The OTPA only requires the operational data for evaluate the contribution of vibration sources and the OPAX has advantage of using parametric model to estimate the operating load and needs a minimum set of extra tests with excitation. In this paper, for evaluating the hindrance of ride quality two methods are used and the result is compared with another result of a car having higher ride quality.
Distance Education is a non-traditional mode of training and can take many forms, one of which is the use of Computer Based Training (CBT). This paper reviews various quality assurance models for designing the delivery of programmes at the universities and other training institutions. It presents the findings of a CBT research that is currently being carried out at the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, University of the West Indies, Trinidad. The significance of the research is discussed with particular emphasis on the influence of curricula sequencing on knowledge acquisition in learners of varying cognitive styles. The paper concludes that adherence to quality assurance principles could result in the enhanced performance of users of the CBT.
This study was conducted in order to investigate the quality characteristics of Salku Pyun which was made by using mungbean, potato, sweet potato and corn starches. The pH of salku juice was 3.45 to 3.50 and the brix of that was 7.0%. The water content and water activity of salku pyun with potato starch was highest. The result of sensory evaluation showed that appearance, flavor, overall quality were highest in the Salku Pyun made with potato starch while texture, taste were highest in the Salku Pyun made with mungbean starch. Mechanical properties of salku pyun with mungbean starch was significantly higher in adhesiveness, hardness, chewiness. Texture of sensory evaluation were positively correlated with springiness, hardness, and chewiness of mechanical measurement. The factors which affect the overall quality on sensory evaluation were texture quality, taste quality, hardness, color and springiness.
Nowadays, the competitiveness of any organisations rests dominantly on how they can manage their performance, A host of performance variables such as quality, reliability, and efficiency are recognised as competitive priorities. This paper reviews the criteria and dimensions of performance measures, and discusses six core performance indicators in agribusiness operations with particular reference to the poultry/broiler farms. Besides, a holistic "Quality, Reliability and Efficiency" view of performance is proposed when developing measures for poultry agribusiness operations.
This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of improving the texture and the flavor of Dasik made of the Omija extract, various sugars and rice powder. Sensory quality and mechanical characteristics of Dasik were compared. The moisture content of the Croup of tile Dasik added with Omija extract was higher than that with non-Omija extract The Omija Dasik containing molasses showed the highest value (23.5%) in moisture content. In sensory quality, Omija Dasik containing honey and symp showed the highest score in overall acceptability (6.2 and 6.0, respectively). The Rice Dasik containing syrup showed the highest values in lightness (L) and yellowness (b) in color. The Omija Dasik containing syrup showed the highest values in redness (a) in color. The Dasik added with honey and syrup were lower in hardness, but higher in cohesiveness, springiness, gumminess and brittleness of textural characteristics. When sensory quality and mechanical characteristics of the Dasik were compared with, the gumminess and brittleness in mechanical characteristics were positively correlated with the appearance and the taste acceptability in sensory quality (p<.01, p<.05). The springiness was negatively correlated with the tooth packing in sensory quality (p<.001). The Omija Dasik was more desirable in flavor, taste and overall acceptability, especially those added with honey and syrup. From the above results, the honey might be replaced by the less expensive syrup, when making the Omija Dasik.
