  • Recent developments in the field of energy harvesting technology that convert ambient energy resources into electricity enable the use of self-powered energy systems in wearable and portable electronic devices without the need for additional external power sources. In particular, piezoelectric-effect-based flexible energy harvesters have drawn much attention because they can guarantee power generation from ubiquitous mechanical and vibrational movements. In response to demand for sustainable, permanent, and remote use of real-life personal electronics, many research groups have investigated flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters (f-PEHs) that employ nanoscaled piezoelectric materials such as nanowires, nanoparticles, nanofibers, and nanotubes. In those attempts, they have proven the feasibility of energy harvesting from tiny periodic mechanical deformations and energy utilization of f-PEH in commercial electronic devices. This review paper provides a brief overview of f-PEH devices based on piezoelectric nanomaterials and summarizes the development history, output performance, and applications.

  • Solar air heaters (SAHs) are simple in design and widely used for solar energy collection devices, and a packed bed is one of typical solar energy storage systems of thermal energy captured by SAHs. This paper presents mathematical modeling and simulation on the thermal performance of various packed bed energy storage systems. A MATLAB program is used to estimate the thermal efficiency of packed bed SAH. Among the various packed bed energy storage systems considered, the wire mesh screen packed bed SAH shows the best thermal efficiency over the entire range of design conditions. The maximum of thermal efficiency of packed bed SAH with wire mesh screen matrices has been found to be 0.794 for Re=2000 - 20000 and ${\Delta}T/I=0.002-0.02$.

  • Pyro-process of solids is the way to heat solid materials under high temperature. In this processing, energy efficient use is one of the main concerns due to its high energy consumption of bulk materials. To calculate the energy use of processes, heat & mass balance in simplified 0-dimensional model was performed. Energy calculation by this simplified model can lead to confusion due to simplification. Thus, it is necessary to understand considerations of energy analysis. In this study, cement manufacturing as a very common example of pyro-processing of solids, was introduced for explaining considerations of energy analysis for energy efficient use.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated electromagnetic induction based scaffold type energy harvester. For energy harvesting, mechanical energy of vertical motion is transferred to rotational energy using rack gear and multiplying gear was used to maximize energy transfer. To optimize design parameters, physical structure of energy harvester was modeled using finite element method. The effect of multiplying gear ratio and frequency levels of applied mechanical energy on energy generation efficiency are analyzed by computer simulation and experimental test. Experimental results showed that maximum 25.36 W of electric power can be achieved at the frequency of 2 Hz and 1:77 of gear ratio with only 5 mm of vertical changes on scaffold structure.

  • In proton exchange membrane fuel cell, the heat is generated at the catalyst layer as result of exothermic electrochemical reaction. This heat increases temperature of gas diffusion layer and membrane whose conductivity is very sensitive to humidity, function of temperature. So it is very important to analysis heat transfer through fuel cell to maintain temperature at specified range. In this paper numerical simulation was done including reversible, irreversible, ionic resistance, water formation loss to source term of energy equation. Results show that irreversible and water formation loss contributes mainly to energy source term and as current density increases, all of energy source terms become increased and Nusselt number is increased as results of more heat generation. Particularly irreversible loss is found to be predominant among the all energy source and water formation at cathode channel influences the temperature distribution of fuel cell greatly.

  • This paper proposes a novel compound-type hybrid energy storage system (HESS) that inherits the unique advantages of both battery/supercapacitor (SC) and the SC/battery HESSs for electric vehicles (EVs). Eight operation modes are designed to match this system. A mode control strategy is developed for this HESS on the basis of these modes, and five classes of operation modes are established to simplify this strategy. The mode control strategy focuses on high operating efficiency and high power output. Furthermore, the compound-type HESS is designed such that the SC is the main priority in braking energy absorption. Thus, this HESS can operate efficiently and extend battery life. Simulation results also show that the compound-type HESS can not only supply adequate power to the motor inverter but can also determine suitable operation modes in corresponding conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that this HESS can extend battery life as well. The overall efficiency of the compound-type HESS is higher than those of the battery/SC and the SC/battery HESSs.

  • In order to find out a physical quantity which controls the fatigue life of a structure and to predict the fatigue life of tires, a finite element simulation methodology to use the cracking energy density (CED) and the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT) was proposed and applied to three different tires of a similar size. CED was calculated to predict the location of a crack initiation, and VCCT was used to obtain the strain energy release rate (SERR) at the tip of an initiated crack. Finite element simulations showed that SERR oscillated in the circumferential direction with its minimum occurring just before the contact zone and its maximum occurring just after the center of the contact zone, and SERR was affected significantly by the frictional force acting on the crack surface. In addition, a durability test was conducted to measure the fatigue life of the three tires. The comparison of SERR values with the test data revealed that the fatigue life increased as the amplitude of SERR decreased or as the R-ratio of SERR increased.

  • The Charpy and Izod impact tests are the most prevalent techniques used to characterize the effects of high impulse loads on ploymeric materials. An analysis method for rubber toughened PVC is suggested to evaluate critical dynamic strain energy release rates(G$\_$c/) from the Charpy impact energy measurements. An instrumented Charpy impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture parameters in addition to total fracture energies and maximum critical loads. The dynamic stress intensity factor Kid was computed for varying amounts of rubber contents from the obtained maximum critical loads and also toughening effects were investigated as well.
