The neighbouring gaps at the mortise-tenon joint in traditional timber structure, which leads to the complexity of the joint, are considered to impair the mechanical performance of the joint. In this paper, numerical simulation of loose joint was conducted to examine the deformation states, stress distributions, and bearing capacities, which was verified by full-scale test. On the basis of the experimental and numerical results, a simplified mechanics model with gaps has been proposed to present the bending capacity of the loose joint. Besides, the gap effects and parameter studies on the influences of tenon height, friction coefficient, elastic modulus and axial load were also investigated. As a result, the estimated relationship between moment and rotation angle of loose joint showed the agreement with the numerical results, demonstrating validity of the proposed model; The bending bearing capacity and rotational stiffness of loose joint had a certain drop with the increasing of gaps; and the tenon height may be the most important factor affecting the mechanical behaviors of the joint when it is subjected to repeated load; Research results can provide important references on the condition assessments of the existing mortise-tenon joint.

Affine transformation was used to analyze the bending, buckling and vibration behaviors of a thick antisymmetric angle-ply rectangular simply supported laminate. Introducing the generalized parameters, the comprehensive solutions are found. The generalized parameters are a generalized rigidity ratio ( $D^*1), a generalized Poisson's ratio (.epsilon.) and a principal rigidity ratio (.alpha.). Hence, the transverse deflection decreases, the uniaxial buckling load and the fundamental frequency increase with increasing $D^*1 and decreasing .alpha., but the effect of .epsilon. is negligible. With decreasing the thickness ratio, the results by the classical plate theory are more erroneous. The transverse deflection is minimum, the uniaxial buckling load and the fundamental frequency are maximum if the fiber angle is 45.deg., and number of plies is more than 4. The time and efforts can be saved to understand the behaviors of composite laminates because these results can be applied to another composite material easily.sily.

Ball reducer with waved grooves has many advantages over other reducers for the high-reduction ratios, low noise and low energy loss, etc. The mechanism of force transmission is very similar to that of cam and follower in automobile valve train system especially in the contact geometry. In this study, we have investigated the traces of contact between ball and outer race and the working behaviors with a certain reduction ratio. In order to verify the contact behaviors between ball and outer race, which determines the critical endurance life the contact velocity and load are computed for a cycle. During some period of a cycle, the contact velocity reverses its direction very suddenly, which causes undesirable endurance performance of this machinery. From the computational investigation in this work, we hope to predict similar contact damages in other machinery due to this kind of contact behaviors, which is very common in many contact phenomena.

Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear Power Plant. In Pipes of energy Plants, sometimes, the local wall thinning may result from severe erosion-corrosion (E/C) damage. However, the effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. In this paper, the monotonic bending tests were performed of full-scale carbon steel pipes with local wall thinning. A monotonic bending load was applied to straight pipe specimens by four-point loading at ambient temperature without internal pressure. From the tests, fracture behaviors and fracture strength of locally thinned pipe were manifested systematically. The observed failure modes were divided into four types; ovalization. crack initiation/growth after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation/growth after local buckling. Also, the strength and the allowable limit of piping system with local wall thinning were evaluated.
Recently, researches for droplet impact phenomena have been faced a new phase in the direction of studying the effect of complex external conditions (e.g. wettability, temperature, morphology, electric field, etc.) for depth understanding and precise controlling in various applications. Hence, here we investigated the electrified droplet impact phenomena, because there were few quantitative researches for electrified droplet impact when we considering many real applications such as electrospray, electrohydrodynamic (EHD) jet printing. To observe interaction effect of surface charge between substrate and droplet simultaneously, micro-droplets with various Reynolds number (Re) and Weber number (We) were dripped on super-hydrophobic surface with existence and nonexistence of electrical surface charge. It shows three kinds of impact behaviors, fully bouncing, partial bouncing, and splashing with different We. Also, charged droplet bounced higher on electrically charged surface than on non-charged surface. Additionally, transition regions of three impact behaviors were classified quantitatively with water hammer pressure value, which means instant pressure inside droplet at the impact moment.
This study on the effects of local wall-thinned location on the fracture behavior of pipes was carried out, and the results were compared with the analytical results. Local wall-thinning for the bending test was machined with various sizes on the outside of pipes, in order to simulate the metal loss, due to erosion/corrosion. In addition, we had carried out FE analysis for the pipes with local wall thinning on the inside, and its results were comparatively studied with that of the outside. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic analyses were able to accurately simulate fracture behaviors of inner or outer wall thinning. Fracture types, obtained from the experiments and analyses, could be classified into ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation, depending on the thinned length and thinned ratio. Based on the results, the fracture behaviors of pipes with the outer wall thinning can be applied to estimate the fracture behaviors of pipes with the inner wall thinning.

The main aims of this study are to develop a new nonlocal quasi-3D theory for the free vibration behaviors of the functionally graded sandwich nanobeams. The sandwich beams consist of a ceramic core and two functionally graded material layers resting on elastic foundations. The two layers, linear spring stiffness and shear layer, are used to model the effects of the elastic foundations. The size-effect is considered using nonlocal elasticity theory. The governing equations of the motion of the functionally graded sandwich nanobeams are obtained via Hamilton's principle in combination with nonlocal elasticity theory. Then the Navier's solution technique is used to solve the governing equations of the motion to achieve the nonlocal free vibration behaviors of the nanobeams. A deep parametric study is also provided to demonstrate the effects of some parameters, such as length-to-height ratio, power-law index, nonlocal parameter, and two parameters of the elastic foundation, on the free vibration behaviors of the functionally graded sandwich nanobeams.
For mechanical force to induce changes in cellular behaviors, two main processes are inevitable; perception of the force and response to it. Perception of mechanical force by cells, or mechanosensing, requires mechanical force-induced conformational changes in mechanosensors. For this, at least one end of the mechanosensors should be anchored to relatively fixed structures, such as extracellular matrices or the cytoskeletons, while the other end should be pulled along the direction of the mechanical force. Alternatively, mechanosensors may be positioned in lipid bilayers, so that conformational changes in the embedded sensors can be induced by mechanical force-driven tension in the lipid bilayer. Responses to mechanical force by cells, or mechanotransduction, require translation of such mechanical force-induced conformational changes into biochemical signaling. For this, protein-protein interactions or enzymatic activities of mechanosensors should be modulated in response to force-induced structural changes. In the last decade, several molecules that met the required criteria of mechanosensors have been identified and proven to directly sense mechanical force. The present review introduces examples of such mechanosensors and summarizes their mechanisms of action.
The sintering behaviors and process parameters of some compounds (carbides, oxides, sulfides, borides) were investigated experimentally. These compounds were successfully consolidated and showed high densities. Some unique phenomena such as retardation of grain growth, suppression of thermal decomposition and maintenance of initial non-equilibrium phases, were observed by the proper control of process in spark sintering.

This paper addresses the control method for skating motion with a nonholonomic constraint. In order to generate a human-like skating motion, the behaviors of motion are distinctively analyzed into transient state and steady state. A close investigation of the behaviors evolved the characteristic of successive motions with transient state and steady state. Simulation results were intuitively comprehensible, and the effectiveness of control method was demonstrated for skating motion.
