Deep mixing method has been used for ground improvement and foundation system for embankment, port and harbor foundations, retaining wall, and liquefaction mitigations. It has attractive benefits because it is not only improved strength of soft ground but superior for prevention of settlement. However, the quality controls of improved mass affect to the efficiency of the deep mixing method is not properly established. These effects vary depending upon the construction environments and conditions of agitation in consideration of an agitator. The strength and shape of the improved column are not unique and these are affected by mechanical properties of agitators. In this study, in order to investigate the efficiency of deep mixing method for ground improvement on a soft clay ground, experimental studies are performed considering mechanical properties of agitator; the location of exit-hole of admixtures, an angle of mixing wing and a speed of revolution. The experiments are conducted with the simulated apparatus for deep mixing plant that reduced the scale in 1:8 of the real plant. According to the results, the diameter and shape of improved column mass vary depending on the mechanical properties and operating conditions of agitator. Its quality is better when the exit-hole of admixtures is located in the mixing wing, when an angle of mixing wing is large, and when the speed of revolution is rapid.
An experimental study to find the effect of processing parameters for self-healing microcapules is performed. These microcapsules can be applied to accomplish the healing of delamination damage in woven E-glass/epoxy composites. This paper introduces the self-healing concept and presents a method for solving the microcapsule size and shape. Additionally, processing parameters are varied during the formation of microcapsules and these capsules are observed through optical microscope. To obtain thermogravimetric(TG) curve for the manufactured microcapsules, TGA tests are executed. From these results, the best processing conditions for the formation of capsules are found as follows: (1) temperature of solution $ 50^{\circ}C$, (2) potential of hytdrogen(pH) 3.5ppm, and (3) agitation 500~600rpm.
Calcium hydroxide fine powders were synthesized by hydration of calcium oxide, and the shapes of powders obtained were examined for each synthethic condition. When distilled water was used as a solvent, irregular and agglomerated submicron powders were obtained, and it was impossible to control of the shapes. In methanol-added solutions, hexagonal plate-like particles were obtained, but addition of ethanol had no effect. However on the occasion that substituted ethylene glycol for ethanol of 5 vol%, hexagonal plate-like powders were obtained. The shapes of powders synthesized in acetic acid and salicylic acid solutions were hexagonal platelike, and were spherical and very fine in citric acid and oxalic acid solutions, respectively. But in some solutions, calcium salts were precipitated by the reaction between calcium and acid added. And the size of powders were very fine using ultrasonic vibration instead of mechanical agitation.
This study intends to provide the analytical and experimental damping characterization of carbon nanotube/epoxy composites. A constitutive model based on continuum mechanics is employed to describe epoxy and the perfectly bonded and partially bonded nanotubes. An interfacial stick-slip between the nanotubes and epoxy is considered to characterize the damping of the composites. For experimental estimation, beam-type specimens are prepared with a variation of nanotube concentration from 0.5% to 2% in weight. An ultrasonic agitation method is employed for enhancing the nanotube dispersion within epoxy. Damping of the composites is characterized in terms of the strain and the nanotube concentration. Results show that the nanotube concentration significantly affects the damping characteristics of the nanocomposites. A good correlation is found between the analytical prediction based on the stick-slip and the experimental measurements.
The present paper investigated the effect of ultrasonic vibrations on the melting process of a phase-change material (PCM). Furthermore, the present study considered constant heat-flux boundary conditions unlike many of the previous researches, which had adopted constant wall-temperature conditions. Therefore in the study, modified dimensionless numbers such as Stefan and Rayleigh were adopted to represent heat transfer results. The experimental results revealed that ultrasonic vibrations accompanied the effects like agitation, acoustic streaming, cavitation, and oscillating fluid motion, accelerating the melting process as much as 2.5 times, compared with the result of natural melting (i. e., the case without ultrasonic vibration). Such effects are believed to be a prime mechanism in the overall melting process when ultrasonic vibrations were applied. Subsequently, energy could be saved by applying the ultrasonic vibrations to the natural melting In addition, various time-wise dimensionless numbers provided a conclusive evidence of the important role of the ultrasonic vibrations on the melting phenomena of the PCM.
This study presents experimental work on phase change heat transfer, in order to increase heat transfer rate, ultrasonic vibrations were introduced. Solid-liquid phase change occurs in a number of situations of practical interest. This study reveal that ultrasonic vibrations accompany the effects like agitation, acoustic streaming, cavitation, and oscillating fluid motion. Such effects are a prime mechanism in the overall melting process when ultrasonic vibrations are applied. Some common examples include the melting of edible oil, metallurgical process such as casting and welding, and materials science applications such as crystal growth. Therefore, this study presented the effective way to enhance phase change heat transfer.
The Friction spot dissimilar welding of galvanized steel/Al6061-T6 was performed to investigate the mechanical characteristics of the joints. The presence of thin film of aluminum oxide on the surface and melting of zinc in the coating, made substandard joint characteristics for dissimilar Friction spot joining(FSJ) performed with out removing the coating. Where as, for dissimilar FSJ of galvanized steel/Al6061-T6 after removing the coating, superior agitation and welding quality has been obtained for a configuration of galvanized steel as the upper plate and Al6061-T6 as lower plate. The results from tensile tests and microscopic examination for various combinations of the welding parameters have been presented.
Experimental studies on both subcooled and saturated pool boiling of water were performed to obtain local heat transfer coefficients on a $3^{\circ}$ inclined tube of 50.8 mm diameter at atmospheric pressure. The local values were determined at every $45^{\circ}$ from the very bottom to the uppermost of the tube periphery. The maximum and minimum local coefficients were observed at the azimuthal angles of $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$, respectively, in saturated water. The locations of the maxima and the minima were dependent on the inclination angle of the tube as well as the degree of subcooling. The major heat transfer mechanisms were considered to be liquid agitation generated by the sliding bubbles and the creation of big size bubbles through bubble coalescence. As a way of quantifying the heat transfer coefficients, an empirical correlation was suggested.
Catalytic removal of sulfur compounds from heavy naphtha (HN) was investigated using a combination of an oxidation process using hydrogen peroxide and an adsorption process using granulated activated carbon (GAC) and white eggshell (WES). This study investigated the impact of changing several operating parameters on the desulfurization efficiency. Specifically, the volume ratio of $H_2O_2$ to HN (0.01~0.05), agitation speed ($U_{speed}$) of the water bath shaker ($100-500{\pm}1rpm$), pH of sulfur solution (1~5), amount of adsorbent (0.1~2.5 g), desulfurization temperature ($25{\sim}85{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) and contact time (10~180 minutes) were examined. The results indicate that the desulfurization efficiency resulting from catalytic and adsorption processes of GAC is better than that of WES for oxidation and removing sulfur compounds from HN due to its high surface area. The desulfurization efficiency depends strongly on all investigated operating parameters. The maximum removal efficiency of GAC and WES achieved by this study was 86 and 65, respectively.
