Arc power is consumed energy per unit time between welding electrodes. The relations between consumed energy and electrode distance, current, voltage are nonlinear characteristics. Therefore commercial A.C. wattmeter cannot be used for measurement of the arc power. Most of arc energy measuring systems are developed for relay contact arc measurement. Relaly arc requires integrated instantaneous power because relay arc finishes in a short instant. But most of welding powers are continually consumed powers, therefore instantaneous power must be continually indicated in the form of averagy value. The author propose a new measurement method of power in which the current and voltage of welding electrode is multiplied and the resultant signal is passed to low pass filter in order to remove higher order frequency components. After integrating, the signal is devided by the integral interval and the results are stored in a computer memory.
This paper is aimed to develop monitoring software for detecting the characteristics of current and voltage signals for series arc on electric wire. In order to attain this purpose, the characteristics of series arc were analyzed by the current and voltage signals on electric wire which were installed, and also analyzed by the changes of RMS, instantaneous of waveform value in time domain and THD in frequency domain. Monitoring program which analyze the signal was developed by Labview which can analyze in time domain and frequency domain, and save data. Experimental setup for detecting verification of monitoring program was composed loads of a lamp, an electric heater and an electric fan loads which were usually using. Measurement points for detecting verification of monitoring program were selected at both the panel board and the arc generator at the same time. As results of the experiments by monitoring program, the arc current waveform showed the same characteristic in all measurement points of all load. But the arc voltage waveform was different in each measurement point. When arc occurred, the THD of current value increased above 20%. The results of this study will be effectively used in developing the preventive system of electric fire by series arc.
In this paper, the fundamental features of the arc stability DC arc furnace have been investigated, from the converter point of view. To compare of measurement arc data from DC arc furnace and the advanced arc simulations of magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) and the well known Cassie-Mayr arc model have been extensively used. The MHD based arc simulation has been validated in the subcomponent level, for the free burning arc set up in the laboratory. The arc simulation predicted the arc voltage for different currents with the accuracy which satisfies engineering requirements. It has been shown that the arc current steepness at current zero determines the arc stability, and the associated peak arc resistance can be used as its quantitative measure. Based on the presented insight into the DC arc stability, a converter topology solution which realizes an optimal arc stability has been proposed. The main results presented in this paper provide a design guideline for the future DC arc furnace converter topology developments.
Most industrial robots cannot be off-line programmed to carry out a task accurately, unless their kinematic model is suitably corrected through a calibration procedure. However, normal calibration is an expensive and time-consumming precedure due to the highly accurate measurement equipment required and due to the significant amount of data that must be collected. This paper presents a simple and economic procedure to improve the efficiency of robot calibration especially for arc welding application. To simplify the measurement process, an automotic data measurement algorithm as well as a simple measurement device are developed. Also, a calibration algorithm which can automatically identify the independent model parameters to be estimated is presented. To demonstrated the simplicity and the effectiveness of the procedure, experimental studies and computer simulations are performed and their results are discussed.
This paper presents investigation of an arc force sensor for a robotic welding control system. Arc force sensor is employed in this research to monitor the bead geometry of the arc welding process. Arc force sensor mounted at the end of the robot wrist was employed to measure the arc force applied to the weld. Experimental configuration for measurement of arc force was used to quantify the changes in the arc force distributions of the plate being welded. A relationship between the bead dimension and the arc force distributions was established. The sensor information was used to establish a relationship between welding current and arc force. Arc force sensor have shown to be one of the most sophisticated technique to monitor perturbations that occurred during robotic arc welding process.
This paper describes a method to measure a weldment surface temperature for estimating variations of the weld pool size in the gas metal arc(GMA) welding processes. An Infrared sensing system is designed to measure the radiation emitted from the top surface of the weldment, The interference effect of the electric arc to the measurement is rejected by detecting the low peaks of the noisy signal. An optimizing criterion, in which the correlation between the weld quality and the measured temperature is maximized, is also proposed to determine the optimal measurement location.
After various measuring methods and system were investigated, Rogowski colis for the measurement of parameters in current zero region were designed and manufactured. Using the Rogowski coils and a 38kV 40kA VCB (vacuum circuit breaker), at last the post-arc current has been successfully measured firstly. It was found that the Rogowski coils used in this study have good characteristics and propriety to measure the parameters of current zero. We realized that the data processing for evaluating the post-arc current from the experimental results needs much more careful attention than that for building the measuring technique and system. The magnitude of post-arc current and the falling time of it to zero are proportioned to the rate of current di/dt. The magnitude of post-arc currents were around $1{\sim}3A$ to the interruption current of $20{\sim}30kA$ in the model VCB.
In this work, a loop sensor for Arc-Flash detections has been developed in order to trip a circuit breaker within 2.5 ms after an Arc-Flash event. For an efficient capturing of the flash light, plastic optical fibers, where light attenuations are larger than those in silica-based ones, with different diameters and surface conditions were utilized. The performance was comparatively analyzed with those of a point sensor and a commercialized product. The point sensor module was designed for hemisphere-like capturings of Arc-Flashes larger than 3 kA at 2 meters from the sensor. On the other hand, the loop sensor allowed 360-degree-detections around the fiber axis and the measurement range was dependent on the length of the fiber connected to the sensor module. The trip-level-dependent brightness measurement results showed that the fabricated point sensor and loop sensor satisfied a brightness condition, 10~40 klux, and the responses of the system to Arc-Flashes were completed within 2.5 ms.
Usually arc phenomena are not easily characterized due to unstable behavior very short existence-times, high temperature and the required isolation of measurement instruments. This paper presents some arc-behaviors in a rotary arc gap-switch(RAG) using a 500kJ capacitor bank. It includes the speed variations of the rotating arc, the impacts of the oscillating current on the arc initiations and re-ignitions. Changes in the arc-dimension with respect to time and current magnitudes are also analyzed.
