The purpose of this study was to develop and verify a precision transmission error measurement system for a gear pair. The transmission error measurement system of the gear pair was developed as a measurement unit, signal processing unit, and signal analysis unit. The angular displacement for calculating the transmission error of the gear pair was measured using an encoder. The signal amplification, interpolation, and transmission error calculation of the measured angular displacement were conducted using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and a real-time processor. A high-pass filter (HPF) was applied to the calculated transmission error from the real-time processor. The transmission error measurement test was conducted using a gearbox, including the master gear pair. The same test was repeated three times in the clockwise and counterclockwise directions, respectively, according to the load conditions (0 - 200 N·m). The results of the gear transmission error tests showed similar tendencies, thereby confirming the stability of the system. The measured transmission error was verified by comparing it with the transmission error analyzed using commercial software. The verification showed a slight difference in the transmission error between the methods. In a future study, the measurement and analysis method of the developed precision transmission error measurement system in this study may possibly be used for gear design.
This study investigates the structural characteristics of oil-free, gas beam foil journal bearings (GBFJBs) for use in high speed motors. Mathematical modeling was carried out, and reaction force modeling for static load was performed to predict the structural characteristics of the GBFJB. Mathematical modeling and reaction force modeling for static load are performed to predict the structural characteristics of GBFJBs. The reaction force of the test bearing against static loads was measured during experiments and compared with the predicted results. The measured experimental data reveal the nonlinear stiffness characteristics of the GBFJB against varying displacement and agree well with the predictions. Dynamic load tests using an exciter allow to identify the vibration characteristics of the GBFJB. Test results show that the vibration displacement, dynamic force, and acceleration measured on the test bearing are most dominant at the applied dynamic load (synchronization) frequency. Futhermore, the test results show that the hysteresis area recorded during the dynamic tests increases with the excitation amplitude and frequency, and that the beam stick phenomena occurr at high excitation frequencies. The single degree of freedom (DOF) vibration model aids to identify the stiffness and damping coefficient of the GBFJB, which decrease as the excitation frequency increases.

Charpy V-notch impact tests were performed on the full-, half-and third-size specimens from two ferritic SA 508 Cl. 3 steels for nuclear pressure vessel. New normalization factors were proposed to predict the upper shelf energy(USE) and the ductile-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) of full-size specimens from the measured data on sub-size specimens. The factors for the USE and the DBTT are $(Bb^2/Kt); and; (Bb/R)^1/2/, $ respectively, where B the width, b the ligament size, $K_{t}$ the elastic stress concentration factor, and R the notch root radius. These correlations successfully estimated the USE and DBTT of the full-size specimens based on sub-size specimen data. In addition, the size effects were studied to develop the correlations among absorbed energy, lateral expansion(LE) and displacement. It was also found that the LE was able to be estimated from the displacement obtained by the instrumented impact test, and that the displacement would be used as a criterion for the toughness of the steels corresponding to change in their yield strength.h.

The purpose of this paper is to present an photoelasticity technique for measuring the displacement and stress distribution in particle assembly subjected to shallow foundation loading. Photoelastic measurement technique was employed to visualize the force transmission of a particle assembly. A model assembly bounded by a steel frame was built by stacking bi-dimensional circular particles made of polycarbonate elastomer. Each particle was coated by a thin photoelastic sheet so that the force transmission represented by bright light stripes can be visualized. In a contacted particle, both magnitude and orientation of principal stress difference can also be measured via the photoelasticity technique. The different distributions of the contact stresses at the initial loading and near the failure were quantitatively compared. The photoelastic patterns and displacement fields observed in the pre-failure state disappears immediately after the buckling of confined force chains.

The UAV's wing has high aspect ratio that is suitable for the high altitude and long endurance. Knowing the real-time deformation of wing structure in flight, it can be utilized in structural health and loading status monitoring, improvement of control effectiveness and extraordinary vibration phenomena using displacement-strain relationship. In this paper, nonlinear displacement prediction algorithm was developed for prediction of large structural deflection in flight. The algorithm was validated through the comparison with finite element analysis results and also experimental results for several large tip displacements of cantilever beam. The predicted displacements using strains are agreed well with the measured values from laser displacement sensor.

In this paper, a decimation-in-time search direction algorithm for displacement prediction of moving object is proposed. The initialization of the proposed algorithm for moving direction prediction is performed by detecting moving objects at sequential frames and by obtaining a moving angle and a moving distance. A moving direction of the moving object at current frame is obtained by applying the decimation-in-time search direction mask. The decimation-in-tine search direction mask is that the moving object is detected by thinning out frames among the sequential frames, and the moving direction of the moving object is predicted by the search mask which is decided by obtaining the moving angle of the moving object in the 8 directions. to examine the propriety of the proposed algorithm, velocities of a driving car are measured and tracked, and to evaluate the efficiency, the proposed algorithm is compared to the full search algorithm. The evaluated results show that the number of displacement search times is reduced up to 91.8$\%$ on the average in the proposed algorithm, and the processing time of the tracking is 32.1ms on the average.
The derailment is defined as phenomena in which the wheels run off the rail due to inordinate lateral force generated when wheel flange contacts with the rail. Derailment coefficient is typical standard assessing running safety and derailment. The traditional method measuring by strain gage adhered to wheels is very complicated and easy to fail. It also requires too much cost and higher measurement technique. Therefore it can hardly ensure safety because we can't confirm at which time we need to identify safety. In this paper, we principally researched the method measuring easily wheel load generated by contacts between wheel flange and the rail, and lateral force. Correlation of vibration and displacement which was related physical amounts of wheel load and lateral force, was investigated and analyzed through analysis, experiment and measurement. And it is presents new measurement method of derailment coefficient which can estimate derailment possibility only by movement of vibration and displacement, by which we understand the rate for acceleration and displacement to contribute wheel load and lateral force and compare actual data of wheel load and lateral force measured from wheel.
In this study, the behavior of unpropped diaphragm walls on decomposed granite soil was investigated through centrifugal and numerical modelling. Centrifuge model tests were performed by changing the interval distance of surcharge. Excavation was simulated during the centrifuge tests by operating a solenoid valve that allowed the zinc chloride solution to drain from the excavation. In these tests, ground deformation, wall displacement and bending moment induced by excavation were measured. FLAC program which can be able to apply far most geotechnical problems was used in the numerical analysis. In numerical simulation, Mohr-Coulomb model fur the ground model, an elastic model for diaphragm wall were used for two dimensional plane strain condition. From the results of model tests, failure surface was straight line type, the ground of retained side inside failure line had downward displacement to the direction of the wall, and finally the failure was made by the rotation of the wall. The angle of failure line was about 67 ∼ 74$^{\circ}$, greater than calculated value. The locations of the maximum ground settlement obtained from model tests and analysis results are in good agreements. The displacement of wall and the change of the embedment depth is likely to have linear relationship.

This paper is concerned with the development, and performance test of LIPCA (Lightweight Piezo-composite Curved Actuator) that is lighter than other conventional piezo-composite type actuators. LIPCA is composed of top fiber composite layers with a high modulus and low CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion), a middle PZT cermaic wafer, and base layers with a high modulus and high CTE. The performance of each actuator was evaluated using an actuator test system consisting of an actuator supporting jig, a high voltage actuating power supplier, and a non-contact laser measuring system. The simply supported condition actuator was excited by the power supplier with 1.0Hz cycle and up to $100\sim400V_{pp}$. The displacement at the center point of actuator was measured with non-contact laser displacement measuring system, It has been shown that the LIPCA-C2 can 34% decrease in mass and 13% increase in displacement compared to THUNDER.
It is generalized to measure the arch settlement and convergence during tunnel construction for monitoring its mechanical stability. The initial convergence rate a day is defined from the first convergence measurement and the final convergence defined as the convergence measured lastly. The initial and the final tunnel arch settlement are defined like the preceding convergence. In the study, the relations between the initial and final displacements of a shallow tunnel are analyzed. The measurements were performed in the tunnel of subway 906 construction site in Seoul. The overburden is 10-20 m and the tunnel goes through weathered soil/rock. The width and height of the tunnel are about 11.5 m, 10m, respectively. So this is a shallow tunnel in weak rock. The length of tunnel is about 1,820 m and the tunnel was constructed in 2 stages, dividing upper and lower half. The numbers of measurement locations of arch settlement and convergence are 184 and 258, respectively. As a result, the initial displacement rate and the final displacement are comparatively larger in the section of weathered soil.
