Various techniques were evaluated to determine the best method for reducing small bowel involvement in pelvic irradiation. Fourteen patients receiving radiation in pelvic area were enrolled for this study. Five sets of small bowel images were obtained. Patients were positioned on a simulation couch with full bladder in prone and supine positions and 2 sets of images were taken. Then they were asked to empty their bladder and 2 sets of images were taken in prone and supine positions. A belly board device (BBD) was placed and one set of images was obtained. Using a software, the area of small bowel inside treatment field was contoured, measured, and analyzed. In both full and empty bladder cases, small bowel area reduction was observed in prone position as compared to supine position. Especially statistically significant reduction is noted in lateral film. An average decreases of 13% in PA and 26% in lateral direction were noted with bladder distention as compared to empty bladder. With the use of BBD for empty bladder, a significant reduction of $62.8{\pm}27.1%$ and $63.1{\pm}32.9%$ in PA and lateral directions were observed as compared to without BBD in prone position, respectively. In conclusion, the best sparing of small bowel concerning the area included in the treatment fields was achieved with BBD in prone position with empty bladder. However, further reduction is expected if the bladder was filled fully because the analysed data with empty vs full bladder study shows increased sparing of small bowel with distended bladder.

In this study, we tested structural performance of Half-Decked PSC girder which was developed for applying to long span bridge. We operated 4 point bending test with 60 m span full scale girder designed as simple bridge with hinge-roller boundary condition. Actuators were set on the both sides of girder, 5.5 m away from the center, and 4 stages of cyclic loading was applied at rate of 1 kN/sec. Through stages 1 to 4, loading and unloading 1,000 kN, 1,200 kN, 1,500 kN, and 2,000 kN were repeated and displacement, strain of concrete and steel, crack of girder were checked. From these results, the strength of girder was assessed and resilience and ductility were observed after removing the load. Since initial flexural crack occurred in the vicinity of 1,400 kN, non-linearity of load-displacement curve appeared and definite residual strain was measured at that point. The test result showed that initial cracking load was over twice the DB-24 load which means the developed girder had sufficient strength. To verify the experimental results, we numerically analyze the test and confirmed that the data were similar with results from the test above. Half-Decked PSC type of 60 m-girder developed in this study showed its adequate structural capacity through static loading test, which proved that possibility of applying the girder to actual bridges practically.
Atomic force microscopy/friction force microscopy (AFM/FFM) techniques are increasingly used for tribological studies of engineering surfaces at scales, ranging from atomic and molecular to microscales. These techniques have been used to study surface roughness, adhesion, friction, scratching/wear, indentation, detection of material transfer, and boundary lubrication and for nanofabrication/nanomachining purposes. Micro/nanotribological studies of single-crystal silicon, natural diamond, magnetic media (magnetic tapes and disks) and magnetic heads have been conducted. Commonly measured roughness parameters are found to be scale dependent, requiring the need of scale-independent fractal parameters to characterize surface roughness. Measurements of atomic-scale friction of a freshly-cleaved highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite exhibited the same periodicity as that of corresponding topography. However, the peaks in friction and those in corresponding topography were displaced relative to each other. Variations in atomic-scale friction and the observed displacement has been explained by the variations in interatomic forces in the normal and lateral directions. Local variation in microscale friction is found to correspond to the local slope suggesting that a ratchet mechanism is responsible for this variation. Directionality in the friction is observed on both micro- and macro scales which results from the surface preparation and anisotropy in surface roughness. Microscale friction is generally found to be smaller than the macrofriction as there is less ploughing contribution in microscale measurements. Microscale friction is load dependent and friction values increase with an increase in the normal load approaching to the macrofriction at contact stresses higher than the hardness of the softer material. Wear rate for single-crystal silicon is approximately constant for various loads and test durations. However, for magnetic disks with a multilayered thin-film structure, the wear of the diamond like carbon overcoat is catastrophic. Breakdown of thin films can be detected with AFM. Evolution of the wear has also been studied using AFM. Wear is found to be initiated at nono scratches. AFM has been modified to obtain load-displacement curves and for nanoindentation hardness measurements with depth of indentation as low as 1 mm. Scratching and indentation on nanoscales are the powerful ways to screen for adhesion and resistance to deformation of ultrathin fdms. Detection of material transfer on a nanoscale is possible with AFM. Boundary lubrication studies and measurement of lubricant-film thichness with a lateral resolution on a nanoscale have been conducted using AFM. Self-assembled monolyers and chemically-bonded lubricant films with a mobile fraction are superior in wear resistance. Finally, AFM has also shown to be useful for nanofabrication/nanomachining. Friction and wear on micro-and nanoscales have been found to be generally smaller compared to that at macroscales. Therefore, micro/nanotribological studies may help def'me the regimes for ultra-low friction and near zero wear.

The digital map database is often produced for multiple purposes, including mapping at multiple scales; it is increasingly rare that a base map is digitized for mapping at a single scale. The most important problems in process of line simplification in map generalization and multiple representation is that tolerance value selected for simplifying base map information must be modified as feature geometry varies within the digital file to ensure both accuracy and recognizability of graphic details on a generalized map. In this study, we explored various algorithms regarding to line simplication at many scales from a single digital file, and presents a rule by which to determine those scale at which line feature geometry might be expected to change in map representation. By applying two measured of displacement between a digitized line and its simplification, five algorithms have been evaluated. The results indicate that, of the five, the Douglas-Peucker routine produced less displacement between a line and its simplification. The research has proved to automating map simplification, incorporating numeric guidelines into digital environment about what magnitude and variation in geometric detail should be preserved as the digital data is simplified for representation at reduced map scales.
High-density rapid expansion material is a method that increases the solid volume of injection materials due to hydration and foam reactions at the same time as spraying. It is an effective method for securing ground stability, restoring subsidence, and loading during construction of structures. In this regard, through the mechanical experiments of injection materials, the stability of the foundation ground of the structure and the effect of increasing the endurance using site construction were analyzed. The results of the experiment showed that the unit weight of soil decreased by 10.5% after injection of the filling material, and the allowable support for the structure was deemed safe, and the subsidence by each section after ground improvement was determined to be safe at 2.28, 1.55 and 0.46 cm, respectively, with an acceptable subsidence of less than 5 cm. After the field test, five inclinometers were installed on the top floor of the target building to measure the displacement of the X and Y axes. As a result of the measurement, no displacement related to the phenomenon of inequality or subsidence cracks of the structure was measured for about 16 months (509 days) after construction. This can be judged to be a sufficient increase in the stability of the ground after the injection of rapid expansion.
This study was conducted to develop low-cost, simplified slope stabilization methods for the continuous utilization of skid trails, and to analyze the effect of the developed methods. Slope stabilization methods were created on the fill slopes of skid trails in the Forest Technology and Management Research Center of the National Institute of Forest Science. We measured the settlement and bearing capacity of skid trail surfaces, and the displacement of slope stabilization methods with respect to the number of passes (maximum 100 passes) by a logging truck weighing 17 tons. The constancy of slope stabilization methods was determined by measuring displacement of the stabilization structure with respect to the number of logging truck passes. Results showed that the bearing capacity in most cases was insufficient, but that the settlement of skid trails was less than 150 mm, which was considered reasonable. In addition, the stability of root staking wallswas somewhat low, but the average displacements of all slope stabilization methods were generally around 20 mm or less, indicating no issues regarding structural stability. By applying the simplified stabilization methods to skid trail maintenance following timber harvesting, efficient timber harvesting can be achieved. Additionally, these methods can be utilized as permanent forest management infrastructures and complement insufficient forest road facilities.

The hybrid test is one of the most advanced test methods to predict the structural dynamic behavior with the interaction between a physical substructure and a numerical modeling in the hybrid control system. The purpose of this study is to perform the multi-directional dynamic test of a steel frame structure with the real-time hybrid system and to evaluate the validation of the results. In this study, FEAPH, nonlinear finite element analysis program for hybrid only, was developed and the hybrid control system was optimized. The inefficient computational time was improved with a fixed number iteration method and parallel computational techniques used in FEAPH. Furthermore, the previously used data communication method and the interface between a substructure and an analysis program were simplified in the control system. As the results, the total processing time in real-time hybrid test was shortened up to 10 times of actual measured seismic period. In order to verify the accuracy and validation of the hybrid system, the linear and nonlinear dynamic tests with a steel framed structure were carried out so that the trend of displacement responses was almost in accord with the numerical results. However, the maximum displacement responses had somewhat differences due to the analysis errors in material nonlinearities and the occurrence of permanent displacements. Therefore, if the proper material model and numerical algorithms are developed, the real-time hybrid system could be used to evaluate the structural dynamic behavior and would be an effective testing method as a substitute for a shaking table test.

This paper describes an analytical study on seismic performance of domestic reinforced concrete (RC) school building not designed by seismic provision. The seismic index and the seismic performance of the building were evaluated through Japanese standard and Midas Gen, respectively. Seismic index (Is) of the RC school buildings in the X-direction is below 0.4. Based on the seismic index, for seismic-strengthening the building, infill shear wall or steel brace with a capacity of 1,300 kN was used. According to nonlinear static analysis results, the contribution of the seismic-strengthening to the shear resistance of the school building was measured to be greater than 30%. However, as expected, shear strength of school building strengthened with infill wall dropt rapidly after peak load and much narrower ductile behavior range was observed compared to steel brace strengthened building. Also, the building strengthened with steel brace showed 30% larger spectral displacement than that strengthened with infill shear wall. In nonlinear dynamic analysis, for the time history analysis, the maximum displacement showed tendency to decrease as amount of reinforcement increased, regardless of strengthening method. It was recommended that variable soil properties and earthquake record should be considered for improving seismic performance of buildings in seismic zone.
This paper predicts the changes in the spring constant, the resonant frequency, the electrostatic force, and the displacement of a resonant structure due to non-ideal anisotropic RIE etching process. First, a $6\;{\mu}m$ thick polysilicon was etched by RIE and the anisotropy of the etched structure was measured as a function of a RF power, a $Cl_2$ flow rate and a chamber pressure. In the experimental results, an anisotropy was decreased as the RF power, the $Cl_2$ flow rate, or the chamber pressure was increased. A comb actuator's operation characteristic was predicted depending on the anisotropy variations in RIE etching. Comb actuators with three different support beam structures were investigated : fixed-fixed, crab-leg, and double crab-leg. As the RIE etch anisotropy becomes non-ideal, i.e. the cross section becomes rather a trapezoidal than a rectangular shape, it decreases spring constant, resonant frequency and electrostatic force of a comb actuator but it increases the displacement of the mass. Among the three structures, the comb actuator with double crab-leg support beams is more influenced by anisotropy variation in RIE etch than other two.

When a ballast track of a high-speed train is constructed on a bridge, the displacement of the bridge decks can occur because they are not fixed to the rails. Moreover, relative displacements occur between the bridge and rails caused by temperature changes and external loads. The current longitudinal resistance criteria (UIC Code 774-3, KR C-08080) on ballast tracks with continuous welded rails (CWRs) do not take into account the longitudinal movement of the bridge and the frictional force between the ballast and slabs. In addition, the magnitude of the longitudinal resistance, k, is calculated somewhat conservatively and, (therefore?) it acts as an unfavorable element in the design of long span and continuous railway bridges. Thus, in order to replicate the actual behavior more effectively, the longitudinal resistance of CWRs should take into account the additional rigidity between the slab and track. In this study, the longitudinal resistances of the ballasted track on the bridge were analyzed by carrying out an experimental study with a test setup designed to simulate the deck and bed track. In the test results, the maximum longitudinal resistances of the tests were similar to the resistances of the current codes, however, the measured longitudinal stiffness designed to limit the displacement of the tests were much smaller in comparison with the longitudinal stiffness on the codes.
