This study aims at reporting a systematic procedure for evaluating the static and dynamic structural performance of steel bridges based on a short-period structural health monitoring measurement. Sungsu bridge located in Korea is considered as a case study presenting the most recent tests carried out to examine the bridge condition. Short-period measurements of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system were used during the bridge testing phase. A novel symmetry index is introduced using statistical analyses of deflection and strain measurements. Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD) is implemented to the strain measurements to estimate the bridge mode shapes and damping ratios. Furthermore, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is also implemented to examine the reliability of bridge performance while ambient design trucks are in static or moving at different speeds. Strain, displacement and acceleration were measured at selected locations on the bridge. The results show that the symmetry index can be an efficient and useful measure in assessing the steel bridge performance. The results from the used method reveal that the performance of the Sungsu bridge is safe under operational conditions.
This paper describes the design and implementation of situation recognition system with smart phone sensors, which recognizes the dangerous situation at anytime, anywhere through intuitive data analysis of the combination of the sensor. The implemented system consists of wearable heart rate sensor and acceleration sensor of smart phone instead of existing sensor that is attached to the body. It is also designed to get more effective results of recognition about the dangerous situation using merged displacement values of acceleration sensor and heart rate sensor which are measured in the process of recognizing dangerous situations. This research, in accordance with the wide penetration of smartphones, achieves the fast status determination through the combination of an acceleration sensor and a heart rate sensor applied to its own status perception algorithm for anyone who needs the stable perception of risk without the need for a separate provision of the sensor.
In this paper, we propose the method to eliminate EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference) in ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) band below 2 KHz for extending the gesture-recognition distance of smart TVs to more than 3m using electric potential sensor. First, we measure the electric field generated from the back panel of a TV and propose the effective arrangement of two sets of differential sensors as well as the shielding method using metal fiber. Also, we eliminate the PLN (Power Line Noise) and other noise generated from the TV and sensors as well as surrounding environments using filters. Using the proposed EMI eliminating methods, we evaluate displacement ratio on measured signals according to distance between sensors and a moving hand. Experiment results show that our proposed method can extend the hand-gesture sensing distance using EPS (Electric Potential Sensor) up to more than 3m, which is enough to satisfy applicability of EPS based remote control to Smart TVs.
Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the relationship between temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and the asymmetry of the mandibular height. Methods: We compared 100 randomly selected TMD patients diagnosed by the research diagnostic criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) Axis I with 100 non-TMD control subjects matched with the TMD patients in age and gender. The mandibular heights were measured on an orthopantomogram and the asymmetry index (AI) was calculated as previously described. Results: The absolute AI value of 4.37% turned out to be the least cut-off value defining asymmetry, which showed a significant difference in asymmetry incidence (p<0.01) between the TMD and control groups. The risk of TMD increased in the asymmetry group by 4.57 (odds ratio). The incidence of asymmetry was not related to age and gender in both of the TMD and control groups. When dividing the TMD group according to the RDC/TMD Axis I diagnosis, neither the incidence of muscle disorder nor disk displacement was related to the incidence of asymmetry. However, a higher incidence of asymmetry was observed in the subjects classified into the arthrosis/arthritis groups (p<0.01). Conclusions: Although it does not imply a direct cause-and-effect relationship, asymmetry resulting in more than 4.37% difference between mandibular heights may increase the risk of TMD and correlates positively to the incidence of arthritic change in the temporomandibular joint of TMD patients.

In this paper, structural behavior of Gasket and GDL of a PEMFC stack is studied to improve the performance and to secure the safety. In the Gasket analysis Mooney-Rivlin strain energy function is used to consider hyperelasticity of load and displacement. The material properties is determined by testing specimens of the gasket at uni-axial and equi-biaxial mode and compared with finite element analysis results. By measuring a thickness change, the material property of GDL is determined. The pressure drop of a unit cell is measured along the channel for the clamping force. A cross sectional change of channel base on the experimental data is obtained experimentally and compare with FEM analysis results.

A Coriolis mass flowmeter(CMF), which has U-Shaped unique measurins tube was developed fo. direct mass flow measurement. In order to convert the time difference between two measuring tubes motion into mass flowrate and flow quantity, a signal processing circuit, as a part of CMF, was also developed. The CMF was designed as the 15 mm nominal diameter of pipe connection and the 8 mm stainless steel(sus 316) pipe was used for measuring tube. To maximize the flow signal(time difference) from the measuring tubes, the natural frequency of measuring tube was adjusted as 220 Hz, which is same as the frequency of exciter. The maximum displacement at the end of the measuring tube was measured as 0.05 mm and the maximum time difference between two measuring tubes was observed as $20{\mu}s$, which was proper for discrimination and measuring range of CMF. The developed CMF was tested against the gravimetric flowmeter calibrator in the range of 3 kg/min and 30 kg/min. The results showed that the CMF has good linearity and repeatability in the tested flow range. Large size of CMF base on the current study experience will be developed.
The mass flow rate of gas flow through critical nozzle depends on the nozzle supply conditions and the cross-sectional area at the nozzle throat. In order that the critical nozzle can be operated at a wide range of supply conditions, the nozzle throat diameter should be controlled to change the flow passage area. This can be achieved by means of a variable critical nozzle. In the present study, both experimental and computational works are performed to develop variable critical nozzle. A cone-cylinder with a diameter of d is inserted into conventional critical nozzle. It can move both upstream and downstream, thereby changing the cross-sectional area of the nozzle throat. Computational work using the axisymmetric, compressible Navier-Stokes equations is carried out to simulate the variable critical nozzle flow. An experiment is performed to measure the mass flow rate through variable critical nozzle. The present computational results are in close agreement with measured ones. The boundary layer displacement and momentum thickness are given as a function of Reynolds number. An empirical equation is obtained to predict the discharge coefficient of variable critical nozzle.

The construction of container terminal at Brani, Singapore required the improvement of soft clay layer having the thickness of about 6.5m, average moisture content of 79.4%, liquid limit of 90.4%, plastic limit of 21.8%, field vane strength of 10 to 25 KPa, pre-consolidation pressure of 225 to 60 KPa and compression index of 0.4 to 1.0. For the improvement of this layer, Colbon drains of 1.3m spacing in triangular pattern were installed to the bottom of the layer and surcharge of more than 11.25m high sand fill was later applied to the treated area. The settlement and lateral displacement of the ground were measured and the speed of surcharge filling was controlled, based on these readings. The removal of surcharge was determinied using the estimated time for the 90% degree of consolidation under the design pressure of 180KPa. The field and laboratory test results show that the soft clay layer has been improved substantially in its strength and consolidation characteristics: increase in strength of about 50KPa and pre-consolidation pressure and decrease in void ratio and compression index.

In this paper, an estimation of person height and 3D location of a moving person by using the pan/tilt-embedded stereo tracking system is suggested and implemented. In the proposed system, face coordinates of a target person is detected from the sequential input stereo image pairs by using the YCbCr color model and phase-type correlation methods and then, using this data as well as the geometric information of the stereo tracking system, distance to the target from the stereo camera and 3-dimensional location information of a target person are extracted. Basing on these extracted data the pan/tilt system embedded in the stereo camera is controlled to adaptively track a moving person and as a result, moving trajectory of a target person can be obtained. From some experiments using 780 frames of the sequential stereo image pairs, it is analyzed that standard deviation of the position displacement of the target in the horizontal and vertical directions after tracking is kept to be very low value of 1.5, 0.42 for 780 frames on average, and error ratio between the measured and computed 3D coordinate values of the target is also kept to be very low value of 0.5% on average. These good experimental results suggest a possibility of implementation of a new stereo target tracking system having a high degree of accuracy and a very fast response time with this proposed algorithm.
Multiple particle tracking microrheology is used to characterize the viscoelastic properties of biomaterial and synthetic polymer gels near the liquid-solid transition. Probe particles are dispersed in the gel precursors, and their dynamics are measured as a function of the extent of reaction during gel formation. We interpret the dynamics using the generalized Stokes-Einstein relationship (GSER), using a form of the GSER that emphasizes the relationship between the probe particle mean-squared displacement and the material creep compliance. We show that long-standing concepts in gel bulk rheology are applicable to microrheological data, including time-cure superposition to identify the gel point and critical scaling exponents, and the power-law behavior of incipient network's viscoelastic response. These experiments provide valuable insight into the rheology, structure, and kinetics of gelling materials, and are especially powerful for studying the weak incipient networks of dilute gelators, as well as scarce materials, due to the small sample size requirements and rapid data acquisition.
