A Single Measure of Cancer Burden Combining Incidence with Mortality Rates for Worldwide Application

  • We attempted to develop an indicator combining incidence with mortality rates (single measure of cancer burden, SMCB) and to compare the magnitudes of cancer burden by world region. The SMCB was used to measure the size of cancer burden summarizing the incidence and mortality. The incidence and mortality were divided in equivalent forms and were split. The criteria dividing the size of cancer burden were used as the maximum incidence and mortality by men and women according to the world database, and the value corresponding to 10% of each maximum was set as the cut-off value. In SMCB, the size of cancer burden was highest for men with lung cancer (SMCB=18) and for women with breast cancer (SMCB=14) in MDR (more developed regions) compared to the size of burden in LDR (lower developed regions) (lung, SMCB=11, breast, SMCB=8). For men, the size of cancer burden by region was highest in EURO (SMCB=18, lung), followed by WPRO (SMCB=16, lung), PAHO (SMCB=14, prostate), AFRO (SMCB=8, prostate) and SEARO (SMCB=7, lung). Moreover, for women, the size of cancer burden was greatest in EURO (SMCB=14, breast), followed by PAHO (SMCB=13, breast), AFRO (SMCB=11, cervix uteri), EMRO (SMCB=9, breast) or SEARO (SMCB=8, cervix uteri) and WPRO (SMCB=7, lung). The summary indicator will help to provide a priority setting for reducing cancer burden in health policy.

Analysis of Experiments for 'Measuring the size of Earth in 8th Science Textbooks

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze methods for measuring the size of the Earth, put forth in 6 different Korean 8th grade science textbooks. The research questions are as follows: 1) Do they adequately map out the experiments for measuring the size of the earth by using the concept of the sun's altitude? 2) Do they reduce the size of the sun like as the Earth is similarly downsized to the globe? 3) Do they suggest the precise experimental conditions for selecting two equal longitudinal spots for measuring the size of the earth? 4) Do they design adequate experiments for exact measurement? 5) Do they offer a proportional expression for seeking the size of globe which is easily understood by students? 6) Do they develop experiments to measure actual size of the earth? Four graduate students and one researcher took part in this study. All conditions were unanimously agreed upon by the participants. The results are as follows. First, one publishing company must include the concept of the sun's altitude to accurately measure the size of the Earth. However, some textbooks fail to mention this. As such, the concept of the sun's altitude must be introduced to accurately measure the size of the Earth. Second, a reduced size globe is used as the actual earth so; the sun should be factored in with a reduced light value. Third, you have to lay a stress on two points at the same longitude. In other words, a shadow located at the same longitude from two randomly selected points. Most textbooks mention two points at the same longitude but two of them design the experiment with a shadow at the same longitude. Fourth, we need a method to precisely measure the angle between a stick and its shadow. The angle between the stick and the tip of its shadow is the sun's altitude difference. Fifth, we need to present more specific proportional expressions for calculating the size of the globe. Only 3 out of the 6 texts employed a proportional expression. Sixth, we need to calculate the size of the earth by accurately presenting the scale of the globe to attain the goal of the experiment. Two of the texts analyzed, designed the experiment for the purpose of calculating the size of the globe. Three of the texts designed their experiments to calculate the radius of globe which is not even relevant to the purpose of experiment.

  • 이 연구에서는 분류를 위한 RF (random forest)의 크기 결정에 유용한 승리표차 MV (margin of victory)에 기반한 불일치 측도를 제안하고자 한다. 여기서 MV는 현재의 RF에서 1등과 2등을 차지하는 집단이 무한 RF에서 차지하는 승리표차이다. 구체적으로 -MV가 양수이면 현재와 무한 RF 사이에 1등과 2등인 집단에서 불일치가 생긴다는 점에 착안하여, max(-MV, 0)을 하나의 불일치 측도로 제안한다. 이 불일치 측도에 근거하여 RF의 크기 결정에 적절한 진단통계량을 제안하며, 또한 이 통계량의 이론적인 점근분포를 유도한다. 마지막으로 이 통계량을 최근에 제안된 진단통계량들과 소표본 하에서 성능을 비교하는 모의실험을 실행한다.

  • A mobile robot in a nuclear power plant is usually needed to equip the ability of going up and down stairs for a some kind of inspection. For this purpose, it is necessary for the mobile robot to figure out the size of stairs laid on a navigation path to gurantee robot's moving freely. In this paper, to measure the size of stairs existing in front of a mobile robot we designed the stair size recognition unit which can measure the stair's height and width using an ultrasonic sensor and/or a CCD camera. Also to obtain higher reliability of ultrasonic sensing data we proposed the horizontal sensing method. On the assupmtions that the mobile robot generates a trajectory while ascending stairs, we simulated it on a IBM compatible computer. The result showed that the suggested method satisfied our purpose. In a stair size estimation, the detected stair's height error was about .+-.3mm, and width was about .+-.5mm.

Measuring Importance of Online Apparel Stores' Design Attributes Using Three Different Methods

  • Due to the virtual nature of online businesses, online apparel stores need to enhance the consumer experience by utilizing store design attributes to provide their customers relevant and sufficient information. Since online apparel stores mainly communicate with their customers virtually and digitally, it is important to understand how consumers perceive and react to different design attributes commonly found on apparel stores' online websites. The purpose of this paper is to examine the importance of design attributes commonly found on online apparel stores' websites using three different importance measurements. The design attributes examined in this study include enlarged pictures, product detail pictures, product reviews by other buyers, coordinating items, and size measurement charts. The three different measurements used in this study include two direct measures and one indirect measure using conjoint analysis. Across the three different measures, both the men and women indicated that enlarged pictures represent the most important design attribute when they purchase clothes online followed by size measurement charts and they considered the availability of coordinating items the least important design attribute.

소형 창문의 차음성능 측정에 관한 고찰 (Measurement of sound Insulation of small-size windows)

  • In order to measure the sound transmission loss(STL) of a test specimen such as windows, which is smaller than the test opening, a special partition is built into the test opening and the specimen is placed in that partition. This paper discusses how the measured STL is changed by the partition when a small-size window of high sound insulation is mounted. Theoretical and experimental investigations are carried out to quantify the effect of the filler wall. The results reveal that the smaller the window size is, the higher sound insulation performance of the filler wall is required in order to measure the accurate STL of the specimen. It is found that the insufficient sound insulation of the filler wall leads to the lower measured value of the window's STL.

브래지어 컵 치수 설정과 착용 전후의 유방 부피 분석 (Establishment of Brassiere Cup Size and Analysis on Breast Volume)

  • This paper analyzes how to measure breast volume and the change in breast volume after wearing a brassiere. Measurement using a breast replica is used to measure the breast volume of 41 women in their twenties. The rate of persons having flat and hemispherical breast are high. The majority of subjects are size 75A, 80A, and 75B, and their under-bust size is 70. The current size specification should be refined for fitting according as the girth under bust decreases. The correlation between breast volume and the circumference of the breasts was high. It was more reliable to set up the cup size of a brassiere using the breast circumference. The mean breast volume is 263.68cc (nude) and the total volume wearing brassiere is 342.05cc. The volume difference according to wearing a brassiere is 78.37cc, which is less than the brassiere volume itself. The results show, the less breast volume of a subject, then the greater volume in wearing a brassiere.

  • 학교수학에서 '각도'는 용어로서의 실효성을 상실한 반면에, '각의 크기' 라는 표현이 우세한 만큼, 그 표현의 수용을 고려할 필요가 있다. 교과서에서 각의 크기는 변의 길이와 관계없이 두 변이 벌어진 정도에 따라 다르다는 것을 명시할 필요가 있다. 해설서의 내용과 교과서의 내용을 일치시켜야 한다. 교과서에서는 각의 크기를 측정하기 위한 임의단위를 취급하지 않는다. 임의단위에 의한 각의 크기의 측정을 생각할 수는 있지만, 그것이 그다지 행해지지 않는다는 실정을 받아들여, 해설서에서 그것을 요구하지 않는 것을 고려할 필요가 있다. 해설서에서 1직각의 표준단위로서의 역할을 명시할 필요가 있고, 교과서에서도 그것을 활용하는 장면을 제시해야 한다. 교과서에서는 삼각형의 세 각의 크기의 합을 구하는 과정과 사각형의 네 각의 크기의 합을 구하기 위해 삼각형과 사각형을 각각 잘라 붙이는 과정에서, 학생들이 크기가 180도인 각과 360도인 각이 그림으로 어떻게 표현될 수 있는지 알고 있다는 것을 전제로 하고 있다. 그것은 비약이다.

  • 소프트웨어 시스템이 양도된 이후에 시스템의 크기가 성장하는 과정을 나타내는 수학적 모델인 소프트웨어 성장 모델은 시스템의 크기와 계획된 크기를 달성하기 위해 요구되는 노력을 예측하는데 사용될 수 있다. 본 논문은 먼저 시스템의 크기 변화량이 추가되는 노력에 비례하고 시스템의 복잡도에 반비례한다는 가정하에서 소프트웨어 성장 모델을 유도한다. 이 모델에서는 시스템의 복잡도가 중요한 역할을 하는데, 본 논문에서는 시스템 크기의 멱함수 형태인 복잡도를 제안하고 실제 자료에 적용하여, 그 유용성을 보인다. 멱함수 형태의 시스템 복잡도는 추가로 복잡도 비교할 수 있게 하는 측도를 제공하는데, 이 측도는 시스템 크기에 무관하므로 크기가 다른 소프트웨어 시스템의 복잡도를 비교하는데 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.

NPV와 IRR은 투자기회들의 수익성을 측정하는가? 수익성 척도로서 조건들 (Do NPV and IRR Measure the Profitability of Investment Opportunities? Conditions as Measures of Profitability)

  • Investors must adopt profitable investment opportunities to maximize their wealth. Almost all investment, finance, engineering economics textbooks explain that net present value (NPV) measures the profitability (or value) of investment opportunities in absolute size, and internal rate of return (IRR) measures the profitability of investment opportunities in relative proportions. However, NPV is a measure of the relative size of the return on investment opportunity to do-nothing alternative. Moreover, IRR can occur in multiple investment opportunities and may not exist. To make matters worse, IRR and NPV also have conflicting problems in accept-or-reject decisions. In this study, the reason why NPV and IRR cannot accurately measure the profitability of investment opportunities is identified, and fundamental characteristics that investment opportunity profitability measures should have are presented.
