Gravity ventilators allow the escape of the warm air and air contaminants due to both (either) buoyancy and (or) convection. As a natural ventilation strategy, various gravity ventilators can be installed on the roof. Ventilation efficiency could be affected by various parameters, such as, area of openings, wind velocity and incidence angle, temperature difference between inside and outside, and shape of ventilator. Especially, the shape of roof gravity ventilator might be one of influencing factors for the effective ventilation. The window type gravity ventilators are frequently installed instead of general (standard) gravity ventilator. However, the ventilation efficiencies of them were not proved yet. To compare the ventilation efficiency, general type ventilator and two window type ventilators were numerically tested. Mean age of air, temperature and CO concentration were predicted by using commercial CFD code, AIRPAK (Ver. 2.0) with various conditions. The predicted result showed that general type ventilator is more effective for natural ventilation than window type ventilators.

The interaction between airflow and liquid phase LfG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) sprays was investigated in a steady flow system embodied in a wind tunnel to simulate the variety of flow inside intake port of LPG engines with liquid injection system. The spray developments in flowing fields with the mean velocities of 5.4, 21.5 and 42.4m/s were identified by spray visualization techniques such as Mie scattering and shadowgraph. The microscopic visualization using a telescopic lens system was performed to investigate the shape and size of liquid droplets in the spray. PDA measurement was used to get 1-dimensional velocity and diameter of liquid droplets. The fast co-flows make the spray field be compact and be lead upward to the injection direction. SMD of the spray was smaller at the fast flowing field. Spray width got bigger and SMD of the spray was smaller with higher injection pressure.
This paper presents vector fields, three dimensional mean velocities, turbulent intensities, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stresses measured in the X-Y plane of the gas swirl burner with a cone type baffle plate by using an X-type hot-wire probe. This experiment is carried out at the flow rates of 350 and 450ℓ/min which are equivalent to the combustion air flow rate necessary to release 15,000 kcal/hr in a gas furnace. The results show that the maximum axial mean velocity component exists around the narrow slits situated radially on the edge of a burner. Therefore, there is some entrainment of ambient air in the outer region of a burner. The maximum values of turbulent intensities occur around the narrow slits and in front of a burner up to X/R=1.5. Moreover, the turbulent intensity components show a relatively large value in the inner region due to the flow diffusion and mixing processes between the inclined baffle plate and the swirl vane. Consequently, the combustion reaction is expected to occur actively near these regions.
The turbulent flow field characteristics of a gun-type gas burner with and without a duct were investigated under the isothermal condition of non-combustion. Vectors and mean velocities were measured by hot-wire anemometer system with an X-type hot-wire probe in this paper. The turbulent flow field with a duct seems to cause a counter-clockwise recirculation flow from downstream to upstream due to the unbalance of static pressure between a main jet flow and a duct wall. Moreover, the recirculation flow seems to expand the main jet flow to the radial and to shorten it to the axial. Therefore, the turbulent flow field with a duct increases a radial momentum but decreases a axial momentum. As a result, an axial mean velocity component with a duct above the downstream range of about X/R=1.5 forms a smaller magnitude than that without a duct in the inner part of a burner, but it shows the opposite trend in the outer part.

This paper was studied to investigate and compare the effects of inclined baffle plate on the turbulent flow characteristics of a gun-type gas burner through X-Y plane and Y-Z plane respectively by using X-probe from hot-wire anemometer system. For this purpose, two burner models with a cone-type baffle plate and a flat-type one respectively were used. The fast jet flow spurted from slits plays a role such as an air-curtain because it encircles rotational flow by swirl vanes and drives mixed main flow to axial direction regardless of the inclination of baffle plate. The inclined baffle plate causes axial mean velocity component and turbulent intensities etc. to be greatly concentrated towards the central part of a burner, and its effect especially appears in the range of about X/R=1.0-2.0. Also, it gives much larger size to axial mean velocity component and turbulent intensities etc formed near the slits in the range of X/R=1.4103. Especially the inclined baffle plate shifts more the Reynolds shear stress uw to the central region of a burner(Y/R=${\pm}$0.75) than the flat-type one, moreover it develops more strongly than uv.
The present study investigated the effect of relative position of the blade on blade surface heat transfer. The experiments were conducted in a low speed wind tunnel with a stationary annular turbine cascade. The test section has a single turbine stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length of the blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance of the blade is $2.5\%$ of the blade chord. The Reynolds number based on blade inlet velocity and chord length is $1.5{\times}105$ and mean turbulence intensity is about $3\%$. To investigate the effect of relative position of blade, the blade at six different positions in a pitch was examined. For the detailed mass transfer measurements, a naphthalene sublimation technique was used. In general, complex heat transfer characteristics are observed on the blade surface due to various flow characteristics, such as a laminar flow separation, relaminarization, flow acceleration, transition to turbulence and tip leakage vortices. The results show that the blade relative position affects those heat transfer characteristics because the distributions of incoming flow velocity and turbulence intensity are changed. Especially, the heat transfer pattern on the near-tip region is significantly affected by the relative position of the blade because the effect of tip leakage vortex is strongly dependent on the blade position. On the pressure side, the effect of blade position is not so significant as on the suction side surface although the position and the size of the separation bubble are changed.

Wind is one of the main forcing contributing the circulation of the East Sea. By using 1.5-layer and 2.5-layer reduced gravity models, circulation in the East Sea is simulated. The bifurcation of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC), the separation of East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) from the east coast of Korea, the Nearshore Branch of TWC, and the cyclonic gyres stretched from the East Korea Bay to the northern half of the East Sea are compared well with the schematic map. The features of the upper and the lower layer are very similar except for those of the central region. The Polar Front is the separating line of two different features. The main feature of northern part of the East Sea, north of the Polar Front is cyclonic gyres, which are composed of three cyclonic gyres in most seasons. North Korean Cold Current (NKCC) and Liman Cold Current (LCC) are the nearshore part of these cyclonic gyres. In the south of the Polar Front the current systems of both layers are anticyclonic in most seasons, except that those of the upper layer in winter and spring are not anticyclonic. Along the coast of Korea and Russia, the velocity structure is barotropic, while that of the central region is baroclinic. The effects due to the seasonal variations of wind stress and local Ekman suction/pumping are studied by imposing the domain with modified wind stress. which is spatial mean with temporal variations and temporal mean with spatial variations. It is found that the local Ekman suction/pumping due to wind stress curl is important to the formation of the cyclonic gyres in the western and the northwestern region of the East Sea.

The large eddy simulation (LES) of the flow around a circular cylinder is not only affected by the sub-grid scale (SGS) model but also by the grid resolution of the computational domain. To study the influence of different grids on the LES results, the LES simulations of the flow around a circular cylinder with different grids at Reynolds number (Re) = 3900 was performed. A circular computational domain with different radial growth rates and circumferential and spanwise grid numbers was adopted for the simulations. Meanwhile, the aerodynamic forces, wind pressure coefficients, mean and instantaneous flow fields, and the effect of grid resolution on them were comprehensively analyzed. The results indicate that the lift coefficient, wind pressure coefficient, and recirculation length are significantly affected by the radial growth rate of the grid and the circumferential grid number. The spanwise grid number has a significant influence on the three-dimensionality of the flow and plays an important role in velocity fluctuations in the wake region. Nevertheless, the aerodynamic coefficients and recirculation length are not sufficiently sensitive to the grid number in the spanwise direction. By comparing the results, it can be concluded that suitable and reliable LES results can be obtained when the radial growth rate is 1.03 or 1.05, the circumferential grid number is 160, 200, or 240, and the spanwise grid number is 64. A radial growth rate 1.05, circumferential grid number 160, and spanwise grid number 64 are recommended to reduce the grid amount and further improve the efficiency.

Harmful algal blooms (HAB) caused by the dominant species Cochlodinium polykrikoides (C. polykrikoides) appear in the South Sea of Korea and are particularly present in summer and fall seasons. Environmental factors such as water temperature, weather conditions (air temperature, cloud cover, sunshine, precipitation and wind) influence on the initiation and subsequent development of HAB. The purpose of this research was to study spatial and temporal variations of HAB in the Yeosu area using environmental (oceanic and meteorological) and satellite data. Chlorophyll-a concentrations were calculated using Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) images by an Ocean Chlorophyll 4 (OC4) algorithm, and HAB were estimated using the Red tide index Chlorophyll Algorithm (RCA). We also used the surface velocity of sequential satellite images applying the Maximum Cross Correlation method to detect chlorophyll-a movement. The results showed that the water temperature during HAB occurrences in August 2002-2008 was $19.4-30.2^{\circ}C$. In terms of the frequency of the mean of cell density of C. polykrikoides, the cell density of the HAB found at low (<300 cells/ml), medium (300-1000 cells/ml), and high (>1000 cells/ml) levels were 27.01%, 37.44%, and 35.55%, respectively. Meteorological data for 2002-2008 showed that the mean air temperature, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and sunshine duration were $22.39^{\circ}C$, 6.54 mm/day, 3.98 m/s (southwesterly), and 1-11.7 h, respectively. Our results suggest that HAB events in the Yeosu area can be triggered and extended by heavy precipitation and massive movement of HAB from the East China Sea. Satellite images data from July to October 2002-2006 showed that the OC4 algorithm generally estimated high chlorophyll-a concentration ($2-20\;mg/m^3$) throughout the coastal area, whereas the RCA estimated concentrations at $2-10\;mg/m^3$. The surface velocity of chlorophyll-a movement from sequential satellite images revealed the same patterns in the direction of the Tsushima Warm Current.

Cosmic rays registered by Neutron Monitors on the surface of the Earth are believed to be coming from outer space, and sometimes also from the exotic objects of the Sun. Ground level enhancement (GLE) is the sudden, sharp and short-lived increase in cosmic rays originated from the Sun. Since GLE is the signature in solar cosmic ray intensity, different solar factors erupted from the Sun can be responsible for causing it. In this context, an attempt has been made to determine quantitative relationships of GLEs > 5% with simultaneous solar, interplanetary and geophysical factors from 1997 through 2006 thereby searching the perpetrators which seem to be causing them. The study has revealed that solar flares are stronger ($0.71{\times}10-4$ w/m2) during GLE peaks than the solar flares ($1.10{\times}10-5$ w/m2) during GLE non-peaks and backgrounds. On the average, the solar wind plasma velocity and interplanetary magnetic field are found stronger during the GLE peaks than the GLE non-peaks and backgrounds indicating that the solar flares, in conjunction with interplanetary shocks, sometimes may cause GLE peaks. Direct proportionality of GLE peaks to simultaneous solar energetic particle (SEP) fluxes imply that the GLE peaks may often be caused by SEP fluxes. Although the high intensity of SEP fluxes are also seen extended few minutes even after GLE peaks, the mean (373.62 MeV) of the GLE associated SEP fluxes is much stronger than the mean (10.35 MeV) of the non-GLE associated SEP fluxes. Evidences are also supported by corresponding SEP fluences that the the mean fluence (${\sim}5.32{\times}107/cm2$) across GLE event was more intense than the mean fluence (${\sim}2.53{\times}106/cm2$) of SEP fluxes across non-GLE event.
