  • Avionics, a type of embedded system, requires high safety and reliability. Failure of avionics equipment can have a significant impact on aircraft operations and, in the worst case, could result in loss of life for pilots and passengers. In this paper, we propose a Built-In-Test (hereafter referred to as BIT) design technique that can detect possible faults in avionics equipments in order to increase the reliability of avionics system and a design that can improve the Mean Time Between Failure (hereafter: MTBF) and applied it to real aviation electronic equipment to improve reliability.

  • The reliability of the multiple-disk system is degraded as the number of disks are increased. In this paper, we find the reliability, in terms of MTTF (Mean Time To Failure)of the single-disk-failure-tolerant disk systems in which the distributions of repair times of failed disk are heterogeneous and general. Also, we derive thresholds of the design parameters such as the mean of life time and repair time, and we consider the cost minimization problem in the special cases under a linear cost structure and constraints to the life of the disk system.

  • An optimal software release, which is related to the development cost, error detection and correction under the various operation systems, is a critical factor for managing project. This paper described optimal software release issues to predict the release time of large switching system with the system stability point of view and evaluated a timely supply of target system, proper utilization of resources under the software reliability valuation basis. Finally, Using initial failure data, based on the exponential reliability growth model methodology, optimal release time, and analysis of failure data during the system testing and managing methodologies were presented.

  • Purpose: Maintaining appropriate operational availability (Ao) is a key element of combat victory, but estimates vary according to estimation methods. The purpose of this study is to improve the accuracy of estimating operational availability by tracing the changes of the weapon system's failure rate, repair rate, and the level of logistic support. Methods: In order to track the change in the operating availability, the MDT (mean down time) is modeled by adding the repair time and the ALDT (administration and logistic delay time) to the service time. Results: Using the field data of the weapon system A operated by the ROKAF, the failure rate follows a non-homogeneous Poisson process that changes with time, and it is modeled considering the changing repair rate and the logistic support time. Conclusion: The accuracy of the analytical results was verified by comparing the actual operating data with the estimated availability. The results of this study can be used to track and evaluate the availability in a realistic situation where the failure rate and maintenance rate continuously change in operating environment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the tail behavior of the life distribution which exhibits an increasing failure rate or other positive aging effects after a certain time point. Methods: We characterize the tail behavior of the life distribution with regard to certain reliability measures such as failure rate, mean residual life and reliability function and derive several stochastic properties regarding such life distributions. Also, utilizing an L-statistic and its asymptotic normality, we propose new nonparametric testing procedures which verify if the life distribution has an increasing tail failure rate. Results: We propose the IFR-Tail (Increasing Failure Rate in Tail), DMRL-Tail (Decreasing Mean Residual Life in Tail) and NBU-Tail (New Better than Used in Tail) classes, all of which represent the tail behavior of the life distribution. And we discuss some stochastic properties of these proposed classes. Also, we develop a new nonparametric test procedure for detecting the IFR-Tail class and discuss its relative efficiency to explore the power of the test. Conclusion: The results of our research could be utilized in the study of wide range of applications including the maintenance and warranty policy of the second-hand system.

  • MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is one of the measures to express the reliability for a repairable system, especially for a military weapon system. But MTBF is meaningless without a clear definition of the system failures. In this paper we discuss two failure definitions, one is defined by US Army Training and Doctrine Command jointly with US Army Materiel Command and the other one is used to M1 Tank.

  • In this paper, the Time-varying Failure Rate (TFR) of power distribution system equipment is extracted from the recorded failure data of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). For TFR extraction, it is used that the fault data accumulated by KEPCO during 10 years. The TFR is approximated to bathtub curve using the exponential (random failure) and Weibull (aging failure) distribution function. In addition, Kaplan-Meier estimation is applied to TFR extraction because of incomplete failure data of KEPCO. Finally, Probability plot and regression analysis is applied. It is presented that the extracted TFR is more effective and useful than Mean Failure Rate (MFR) through the comparison between TFR and MFR.

  • This paper proposes an integrated recovery approach applying retry and rollback techniques to recover the TMR failure. Combining the time redundancy techniques with W system is apparently effective to recover the TMR failure(or masked error) primarily caused by transient faults. These policies need fewer reconfigurations at the cost of extra time required for the time redundant schemes. The optimal numbers of retry and rollback to minimize the mean execution time of tasks are derived for the proposed method through computing the likelihoods of all possible states of the failed system. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through examining certain numerical examples and simulations conducted with a variety of parameters governing environmental characteristics.

  • The reliability assessment is performed for Pressure Control Regulator of Aircraft Fuel System using reliability procedure which consists of the reliability analysis and the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis(FMEA). The target reliability as MTBF(Mean Time Between Failure) is set to 5000hr. During the reliability analysis process, the system is categorized by Work Breakdown Structure(WBS) up to level 3, and a reliability structure is defined by schematics of the system. Since the components and parts that have been collected through EPRD/NPRD. The predicted reliability to meet mission requirements and operating conditions is estimated as 4375.9hr. To accomplish the target reliability, the components and parts with high RPN have been identified and changed by analyzing the potential failure modes and effects. By changing the configuration design of components and parts with high-risk, the design is satisfied target reliability.

  • The needs for the cryocooler which has high reliability and long MTTF are increased in the military and commercial thermal imaging system The gas contamination wear, leakage of the working fluid, fatigue and etc. have the significant effects on the reliability and MTTF(Mean Time To Failure) or MTBF(Mean Time Between Failure) of the Stirling cryocooler. In the KIMM, the Stilting cryocooler with the linear compressor was released after the several performance tests were performed. This paper describe the experimental facility for the MTTF evaluation and some typical results of the Stilling cryocooler.
