Drinking behaviors by stress level in Korean university students

  • The purposes of this study are to estimate the stress level of university students, and to verify the relationships between stress level and drinking behavior. A questionnaire survey was administered to 430 university students in the Gangwon area in Korea from November 5 to November 28, 2008, and data from 391 students were used for the final statistical analysis. The most stressful factor was "Worry about academic achievements" (2.86 by Likert-type 4 point scale). The subjects were divided into two groups, a low stress group (${\leq}65.0$) and a high stress group (${\geq}66.0$), by the mean value (65.1) and median value (66.0) of the stress levels. The drinking frequency was not different between the two stress groups, but the amount of alcohol consumption was significantly different ($P$ < 0.05). The portion of students reporting drinking "7 glasses or over" was higher in the lower stress group than in the higher stress group. In addition, factor 6, "Lack of learning ability", was negatively correlated with drinking frequency and the amount of alcohol consumption ($P$ < 0.05), and factor 3, "Worry about academic achievements", was negatively correlated with the amount of drinking ($P$ < 0.05). The major motive for drinking was "When overjoyed or there is something to celebrate" (2.62), and the main expected effect of drinking was "Drinking enables me to get together with people and shape my sociability" (2.73). The higher stress group showed significantly higher scores on several items in the categories of motives ($P$ < 0.01), negative experience ($P$ < 0.05), and expected effects ($P$ < 0.05) of drinking than the lower stress group. Our results imply that university students at the lower stress level may drink more from social motives in positive drinking environments, while those at the higher stress level may have more problematic-drinking despite their smaller amount of alcohol consumption.

The Effect of Stress on Sports Injuries in Rhythmic Gymnastics Athletes (리듬체조 선수들의 스트레스가 스포츠 손상에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : This study was conducted to investigate the effects of stress on sports injuries that occur to the university rhythmic gymnasts in Korea. Methods : All general characteristics of rhythmic gymnasts were analyzed as descriptive statistics and, the incidence of sports injuries was analyzed. To examine the differences in the incidence of sports injuries between the group with upper-level and lower-level stress scores, the independent sample t-test was carried out. For the correlation between number of sports injuries and stress scores, Pearson correlation coefficient was used. All statistical analyses were carried out using the SPSS version 24.0 with the level of significance set to α=.05. Results : The mean stress score of university rhythmic gymnasts was 3.68±1.31. The incidence of sports injuries was 57 cases in total, and per student, 2.28±0.61 cases occurred on average. The incidence of sports injuries differed significantly between the group with upper-level and lower-level stress scores. In addition, significant differences were found in the analysis of the correlation between number of sports injuries and stress scores, with regard to the psychological and emotional stress and the social stress against overall variables. Conclusion : The incidence of sports injuries was higher for the gymnasts with higher stress scores. In addition, correlation were found in the analysis of the between number of sports injuries and stress scores, emotional and psychological stress and the social stress.

Mediating Effect of Mindfulness between Stressful Life Events and Depression in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 생활스트레스와 우울의 관계에서 마음챙김의 매개효과)

  • Purpose: This study examined the relationship among stressful life events, mindfulness and depression, and explored the mediating role of mindfulness between stressful life events and depression in nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken. A sample of 120 nursing students participated in the study. The self-reported measures of stressful life events (revised life stress scale), depression (DASS-D) and mindfulness (MAAS) were adopted in April, 2017. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, frequency, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Mediation analysis was performed using the Baron & Kenny method and Sobel test. Results: The mean scores of stressful life events, mindfulness and depression were 39.50, 77.03, and 8.18, respectively. Higher levels of stressful life events were associated with lower mindfulness (r = -46, p < .001) and higher depression (r = -44, p < .001), and mindfulness was negatively associated with depression (r = -72, p < .001). Mindfulness showed full mediation in the relationship between stressful life events and depression. Conclusion: Stressful life events influenced the nursing students' depression via the full mediating effect of mindfulness. Promoting mindfulness plays an important role in reducing depression in nursing students. Therefore, it is important to develop a mindfulness program or use a mindfulness-based stress reduction program (MBSR) for nursing students.

Assessment of the Effect of Probabilistic Modeling of Sea-States in Fatigue Damage Calculations

  • Spectral fatigue damage calculations has been performed on four ships in order to assess the effect that the probabilistic modeling of sea states has on the estimated fatigue life. The damage estimation method is based on the Miner- Palmgren fatigue damage formulation and a spectral approach is used to determine the necessary variances of the stress processes. Both the horizontal and vertical hull girder bending induced stress process together with the local water pressure induced stress process is taken into account. The wave scatter diagrams are applied in the calculations and their fatigue severity is assessed by analyzing the results obtained with the ten scatter diagrams and the four ships. All four ships are analyzed both in full load and ballast conditions and while traveling at both full and reduced speed. It is found that the fatigue severity of a wave scatter diagram is dependent on several parameters, some of these being the extreme wave hight extrapolated from the scatter diagram and the mean zero up-crossing period in conjunction with the ship length . Based on these three parameters and expression is derived in order to calculate one single number describing the fatigue severity of a scatter diagram with respect to a certain ship.

The Effect of Nursing Students' Emotion Intelligence and Learning Flow on Career Stress (간호대학생의 정서지능과 학습몰입이 진로스트레스에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : This study was carried out to find out the relationship between emotion intelligence, learning flow and career stress of nursing students and influence factors for career stress. Methods : This study targeted 197 university students in their freshman-senior year attending College of Nursing located in P Metropolitan City. For collected data, real numbers and percentage, mean and standard deviation and multiple regression analysis were carried out by using PASW 21.0 program and the correlation between emotion intelligence, learning flow and career stress was analyzed with Pearson's correlation coefficients. Results : Emotional self-awareness(M=3.80, SD =.71), clear goals(M=3.39, SD=.90) and school environment stress(M=2.97, SD=.96) were found to be high in the degree of emotion intelligence, learning flow and career stress of the subjects. The relationship between emotion intelligence and learning flow showed a positive correlation(r=.489, p<.01) in the correlation between emotion intelligence, learning flow, career stress and emotion intelligence showed a negative correlation with career stress(r=-.204, p<.01). Emotion intelligence and learning flow show that career stress is predicted significantly (${\beta}$ =-.15, p < .01) and explained a career stress variate as 18%(F = 24.5, p < .01). Conclusion : Emotion intelligence of nursing students was found to be very influential on the degree of learning flow or career stress. Based on the results of this study, replication studies on emotion intelligence and career stress are needed and the development of intervention programs to increase emotion intelligence is needed.

The Study of Fatigue, Perceived Health Status, Marital Adjustment and Stress in Middle Aged Women (중년여성의 피로와 지각된 건강상태, 결혼적응도 및 스트레스)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explain the relationship between fatigue and other variables(perceived health status, marital adjustment and stress), and define the main factors influencing fatigue in middle aged women. Methods: Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires from 212 middle aged women. Data analysis was done with the SPSS 11.0 pc+ program for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The mean score of fatigue was 2.30(${\pm}0.46$), perceived health status was 2.82(${\pm}0.68$), marital adjustment was 2.86(${\pm}0.44$), and stress was 2.43(${\pm}0.61$). There were significant correlations between fatigue and the other variables(r=.56-.21, p=.00). The major factors that affect fatigue in middle aged women were stress, perceived health status, and marital adjustment, which explained 35.2% of fatigue. Conclusion: These variables have an effect on middle aged women's fatigue. Therefore, these findings can provide the basis for the development of nursing interventions to manage fatigue.

Effects of a Discharge Education Program Using On-line Community for Parents of Premature Infants (온라인 커뮤니티를 이용한 미숙아 퇴원교육 프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine effects of a discharge education program using on-line community on parenting stress, baby care confidence for mothers of premature infants and health problem of premature infants. Methods: Using a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design, 32 participants were assigned to an experimental (17) or a control group (15). Mothers in the experimental group were introduced to the discharge education program 2 weeks before the baby was discharged. They participated in the on-line community for 4 weeks after discharge. Parenting Stress Index and Baby Care Confidence Scale were utilized for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, $X^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, and Mann-Whitney U test with the SPSS program 16.0 version. Results: In the experimental group, mean scores for parenting stress were lower than for the control group (Z=-3.176, p=.001), while scores for confidence in baby care were higher than for the control group (Z=-3.195, p=.001). Conclusion: Findings indicate that discharge education programs using on-line community have the positive effect of decreasing parenting stress and increasing baby care confidence for mothers and decreasing health problems for infants. Therefore utilization of the internet and online community to educate parents of premature infants is recommended.

Fatigue Life Prediction of the Carrier of Slewing Reducer for Tower Crane (타워크레인용 선회감속기의 캐리어 피로 수명 예측)

  • The purpose of this study is to predict the fatigue life of a planet carrier of a slewing reducer for a tower crane. To predict the fatigue life of the carrier, the inertia endurance test was carried out, and then the input torque profile for the reducer was obtained. The load profile acting on the planet pins that assembled the carrier was calculated from the measured input torque profile using commercial gearbox analysis software. The stress profiles of the carrier weak points were analyzed from the calculated load profile and boundary conditions using commercial FE software, and the stress cycles were determined using the rainflow counting method. Finally, the fatigue life of the carrier was predicted using the equivalent stress range by considering the effect of mean stress, and an S-N curve was drawn up using the GL guideline and the cumulative damage law.

  • Purpose: This study examined the mediating effects of gratitude on the relationship between life stress and depression in nursing students. Methods: The participants were 181 nursing students recruited from 2 universities in B and D cities in South Korea. Baron and Kenny's regression method and the Sobel test were employed to analyze the mediating effects of gratitude on the association between life stress and depression, via the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: The participants' mean depression score was 9.58, and there were significant differences in depression according to perceived interpersonal relationships and perceived physical health statue. In addition, gratitude exerted partial mediating effects on the relationship between life stress and depression. Conclusion: This study indicated gratitude as factors managing depression in nursing students. Based on the results of this study, strategies to increase nursing students' gratitude are highly recommended for management of their depression.

  • This study was conducted to provide information about weight control behavior in adolescent females. To explain the behavior intention of dieting, conceptual framework based on "Social Support, Control and the Stress Process Model" and "Theory of Reasoned Action" was used. The survey was carried out by self-questionnaires with 463 female high school and college students in Daegu. Analysis of data was done using mean, correlation and multiple regression analysis with the SAS computer program. A society preoccupied with thinness gives a burden to women, and this burden may stress dissatisfaction with body image. Social perception of ideal body image except parents' perception, and salient others'perception, and salient others' expectation of subjects' body image except parents' expectation, were much thinner than normal figures in this study. The influencing factors for behavior intention of dieting of the subjects were perceived stress and attitude toward diet behavior, especially beliefs of behavioral outcome. Influencing factors related to perceived stress-that is dissatisfaction of body image-were current figure, social perception of body image, effect of mass communication and others' estimation of subjects' body image with self-comparison with others, in order.th others, in order.
