  • The effect of water temperature on fasting and post-prandial total ammonia excretion (TAN) of the starry flounder Platichthys stellatus (mean body weigh : $42.4{\pm}3.4g$) was studied. The fasting and post-prandial TAN excretions were measured under three different water temperatures (10, 15 and $20^{\circ}C$) for 24 hours using a recirculating system. In each treatment three replicates were set up and total 45 fish were used. Fish were taken to the indoor aquarium, acclimated over 10 days at three temperatures, and transferred to TAN measuring system for measurements of TAN excretion at the same temperatures. After 3 days of starvation, fasting TAN excretion was measured at each temperature. To investigate post-prandial TAN excretion, fish were hand-fed to satiation level with a commercial diet containing 50.2% crude protein for 7 days, two times daily 08 : 00 and 16 : 00 h. The fasting and postprandial TAN excretion increased with increased water temperature (p<0.05). Mean fasting TAN excretion rates at 10, 15 and $20^{\circ}C$ were 10.9, 11.2 and $12.2mg\;TAN\;kg\;fish^{-1}\;h^{-1}$, respectively. The value at $20^{\circ}C$ was higher than those at 10 and $15^{\circ}C$ (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference between $10^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$. Mean post-prandial TAN excretion rates at 10, 15 and $20^{\circ}C$ were 33.0, 43.4 and $55.3mg\;TAN\;kg\;fish^{-1}\;h^{-1}$, respectively. Two peaks of post-prandial TAN excretions were observed, and the second peak was always greater than the first. The post-prandial TAN excretion rate reached to the maximum after 10 hours from the first feeding at $10^{\circ}C$($45.3mg\;TAN\;kg\;fish^{-1}\;h^{-1}$), $15^{\circ}C$ ($64.5mg\;TAN\;kg\;fish^{-1}\;h^{-1}$) and $20^{\circ}C$ ($83.2mg\;TAN\;kg\;fish^{-1}\;h^{-1}$), respectively. The TAN loss for ingested nitrogen at $20^{\circ}C$ (48.8%) was higher than that for $10^{\circ}C$ (43.0%) and $15^{\circ}C$ (45.7%). This study provides empirical data for estimating ammonia excretion and managing culture management of starry flounder under given temperatures.

  • We estirmted the yearly and monthly variation in discharge from the Nakdong River Barrage. We studied the total monthly discharge, the mean daily discharge, and the maximum daily discharge based on the observational discharge data for the 11-year period 1996-2006. We also examined the correlation between the discharge and the meteorologiml factors that influence the river inflow. The results from this study are as follows. (1) The total monthly discharge for 11 years at the Nakdong River Barrage was $224,576.8{\times}10^6\;m^3$: The daily maximum was in 2003, with $56,292.3{\times}10^6\;m^3$. The largest daily mean release discharges occurred in August with $52,634.2{\times}10^6\;m^3$ (23.4% of the year), followed by July and September in that order with 23.1 and 17%, respectively. (2) The monthly pattern of discharge could be divided into the flood season for the period July-September (discharge =$1000{\times}10^6\;m^3$/day), the normal season from April to June and October (discharge=$300{\times}10^6\;m^3$/day), and the drought season from December to March (discharge < $300{\times}10^6\;m^3$/day). (3) Periods of high temperature, low evaporation loss, and short sunshine duration produced a much higher discharge in general. Conditions of low rainfall and high evaporation loss, as was the rose in 2003, tended to reduce the discharge, but high rainfall and low evaporation loss tended to increase the discharge as it did in 200l. (4) The dominant wind directions during periods of high discharge were NNE (15.5%), SW and SSW (13.1%), S(12.1%), and NE (10.8%) This results show that it run bring on accumulation of fresh water when northern winds are dominant, and it run flow out fresh water toward offslwre when southern winds are dominant.

  • Adult longevity and fecundity of the foxglove aphid, Aulacorthum solani Kaltenbach, were studied at $12.5{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ with $60{\sim}70%$ RH under 16L:8D and the results were put together to build a life table. The longevity of foxglove gradually increased with decreasing temperature below $25^{\circ}C$. Also total fecundity increased with decreasing temperature and highest fecundity was 74.1 nymphs per female at $15^{\circ}C$. However, daily fecundity increased with increasing temperatures up to $20^{\circ}C$ showing 2.9 nymphs per day and thereafter decreased. Net reproduction rate ($R_0$) was highest of 58.7 at $15^{\circ}C$. The intrinsic rate of increase per day ($r_m$) and the finite rate of increase per day (${\lambda}$) were highest of 0.27 and 1.32, respectively and the doubling time (Dt) was shortest of 2.52. the mean generation time (T) was 10.99 at $22.5^{\circ}C$.

  • Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) refers to seed germination during ripening, due to loss of dormancy before harvest. As PHS in rice causes decrease in grain yield and quality, tolerance to PHS is an important trait of Japonica cultivars in Korea. It is important to investigate the related genes and environmental factors, because PHS is a quantitative trait. In this study, we examined PHS rates at three different times according to the cumulative daily mean temperature after heading (CTAH) for 5 rice cultivars released in Korea for 5 years from 2013 to 2017 to determine the effect of environmental factors on PHS. ABA content in ripening spikelets was analyzed to understand how it was related to PHS tolerance. PHS rate increased as CTAH increased from $800^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. PHS rate was significantly different (p < 0.001) among the cultivars, showing Dasanbyeo, Jounbyeo, and Nampyeongbyeo to be PHS-tolerant, and Jopyeongbyeo and Gopumbyeo to be susceptible at all the CTAH of 800, 1000, and $1200^{\circ}C$. In 2015 and 2016, PHS rates were relatively higher, because of high temperature and frequent rainfall during the ripening period. In each cultivar, ABA content decreased as CTAH increased from $800^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. However, there was no significant correlation between ABA content and PHS tolerance among the cultivars.

  • A thermal time-based phenology model of Kimchi cabbage was developed by using the field observed growth and temperature data for the purpose of accurately predicting heading and harvest dates among diverse cropping systems. In this model the lifecycle of Kimchi cabbage was separated into the growth stage and the heading stage, while the growth amount of each stage was calculated by optimal mathematical functions describing the response curves for different temperature regimes. The parameter for individual functions were derived from the 2012-2014 crop status report collected from seven farms with different cropping systems located in major Kimchi cabbage production area of South Korea (i.e., alpine Gangwon Province for the summer cultivation and coastal plains in Jeonnam Province for the autumn cultivation). For the model validation, we used an independent data set consisting of local temperature data restored by a geospatial correction scheme and observed harvest dates from 17 farms. The results showed that the root mean square error averaged across the location and time period (2012-2014) was 5.3 days for the harvest date. This model is expected to enhance the utilization of the Korea Meteorological Administration's daily temperature data in issuing agrometeorological forecasts for developmental stages of Kimchi cabbage grown widely in South Korea.

  • This ecological study was conducted to analyze seasonal variation characteristics of Zostera marina at HAENAM SAGUMI on the Southern Coast of Korea. Environmental characteristics, plant morphological characteristics, shoot density, biomass, and leaf production were monitored from August 2008 to March 2011. Zostera marina occurred in the subtidal zone from 0 to 2.5 m below the mean low water level. Water temperature showed a clear annual pattern, with increase in spring and summer, and decreases in fall and winter. Irradiance showed seasonal variation, even though daily weather condition has short-term variation in the incident irradiation. Plant morphological characteristics, shoot density, biomass, and leaf production showed clear seasonal variation. Seasonal variation in the above biomass of Zostera marina was mainly caused by changes in shoot length. We found that there are correlations between environmental characteristics (water temperature, irradiation) and the growth of Zostera marina. There is stronger correlation between water temperature and the growth of Zostera marina, compared to the correlation between irradiation and the growth of Zostera marina. In particular, the growth of Zostera marina is inhibited by both higher and lower water temperature.

  • Objective: The Bashang Long-tail chicken (BS), an indigenous Chinese breed, is considered cold tolerant. We selected BS, the Rhode Island Red (RIR), and their reciprocal crossbreds for the present study. The objectives were: i) to validate whether BS is cold tolerant and whether egg production and cold tolerance of crossbreds could be improved; and ii) to determine the physiological characteristics that underlie cold tolerance and favorable egg production performance in cold environments. Methods: A total of 916 chickens were reared in warm and natural cold environments (daily mean ambient temperature varied from $7.4^{\circ}C$ to $26.5^{\circ}C$ in the warm environment and from $-17.5^{\circ}C$ to $27.0^{\circ}C$ in the cold environment). To investigate their adaptability to the cold environment, the egg production performance and body weight were monitored and compared between breeds and environments. The cloacal temperature and serum biochemical parameters were monitored to reveal the physiological characteristics underlie cold tolerance and favorable egg production performance in the cold environment. Results: The warm environment experiment showed that RIR had the highest egg production performance, and that the reciprocal crossbreds had a higher egg production performance than BS. While in the cold environment RIR had the lowest egg production performance, and the reciprocal crossbreds had a higher egg production performance than BS. In the cold environment BS and reciprocal crossbreds had higher triiodothyronine, tetraiodothyronine levels than RIR. At 35 and 39 wk of age, when the ambient temperature was extremely low (varied from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $0^{\circ}C$), serum glucose, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, estradiol of BS and crossbreds were higher than RIR. Conclusion: Bashang Long-tail chicken has a favorable cold tolerance ability. Crossbreeding with RIR and BS is an effective way to develop cold tolerant chickens with improved egg production performance.

  • Pear psylla, Caccopsylla pyricola (Homoptera: Psyllidae), is a serious insect pest in pear orchards. C. pyricola overwinters as adults under rough bark scales of pear trees. When the weather warms up in the spring, the overwintered adults become active, climb up to the tree branches, and inhabit on fruit twigs to lay eggs. This study was conducted to develop a forecasting model for the onset of upward-movement of overwintered C. pyricola adults to control them by timely spraying of petroleum oil. The adult population densities were observed under rough barks (B) and on fruit twigs (T) of pear trees. Relative upward-movement rates (R) were calculated as T/(B+T). Low threshold temperatures for the activation of overwintered C. pyricola adults were selected arbitrarily from 5 to $9^{\circ}C$ at a $1^{\circ}C$ interval. Then, the days (D) when daily maximum air temperatures were above each low threshold temperature were counted from 1 February until to the dates with R $\geq$ 0.8. The same methods were applied for the prediction of the first observation of eggs. The variation of coefficients (CV) for the mean Des were lowest with the low threshold temperature of $6^{\circ}C$. At this selected threshold temperature, the upward movement of C. pyricola adults occurred with 12 D and they started laying eggs with 25 D. In the field validation, the model outputs with the $6^{\circ}C$ threshold temperature reasonably well explained the observed data in Suwon and Cheonan in 2002. Practical usages of the model were also discussed.

  • To predict the blooming date of 'Yumyeong' peach trees, the models for flower bud developmental rate (DVR) were constructed. The DVRs were calculated from the demanded times at controlled air temperatures. The branches of 'Yumyeong' peach trees were incubated at three different temperatures of 9.7, 15.2, and $18.9^{\circ}C$. The DVRs were also constructed with blooming dates and air temperatures in the field, collected from 1979 to 2008 at the experimental orchard of National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Suwon, Korea. All the DVRs increased linearly or exponentially with air temperature. The DVR equations evaluated under controlled air temperatures were y=0.0018x+0.0051 and y=$0.0125e^{0.0603x}$. The DVR equations under field conditions were calculated as y=0.0039x-0.0112 and y=$0.0062e^{0.1512x}$. These DVR equations offer developmental indices and predict the date for blooming with air temperature data. These DVR equations were validated against the blooming data observed in the field. When the blooming dates were calculated with exponential DVR equations and daily air temperature data, the root mean squared errors between the observed and predicted dates were around 2 days. These results suggest that the DVR models are useful to predict the blooming date of 'Yumyeong' peach trees.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate temperature distribution in the double layer plastic greenhouse and chilling injury to watermelons grown during a cold season. Temperatures on eastern and western sides were about 6.2% and 14.7%, respectively, lower than that of central section in a south-north oriented greenhouse. Daily mean temperature in the northern part was about 1-2$^{\circ}C$ higher than that in the southern part of the greenhouse. In terms of vertical temperature distribution inside the greenhouse, temperature at ground surface was approximately 1$^{\circ}C$ lower during the day and 0.5$^{\circ}C$ higher during the night than that in the upper part, 2m from the ground surface. Leaf mould medium kept higher ground temperatures as compared to sandy soil, red clay soil, and in the northern and southern sides as compared to the central part of the greenhouse. A symptom of chilling injury on leaves was upward curling, followed by chlorosis and necrosis. A severe symptom of chilling injury to plants was the breakdown of vascular bundles. Root growth was more susceptible than stem or leaf growth to low temperatures. At 3$0^{\circ}C$, main and lateral roots grew vigorously, while lateral root growth was inhibited at 22$^{\circ}C$ and root growth was stopped at 14$^{\circ}C$ and 6$^{\circ}C$. Small and puffy fruits with dark green surface were produced at low temperatures. In cold season cultivation of watermelons, it is suggested that plants be transplanted in the central part and train to sides of the greenhouse in order to reduced chilling injuries.
