  • Although the problems of defects and nonmetallic inclusion in metal fatigue are very complicated it is particularly important to view these problems from the perspective that defects and inclusions are virtually equivalent to small cracks. This concept will help us to understand various fatigue phenomena caused by graphite of Ductile cast iron. Therefore in this study different ferrite-pearlite matrix structure and pheroidal ratio of graphite of 70%, 80% and 90% GCD40 , GCD45-2 series have been carried out rotary bending fatigue test estimated the maxi-mum size of graphite investigated correlation. It was concluded as follows : (1) in ductile cast iron which have various spheroidal ratio of graphite the fatigue limit C series of 90% spheroidal ratio of graphite is the highest. While A series of 70% spheroidal ratio of graphite is the lowest (2) fatigue limit was predicted by vickers hardness(Hv) of matrix {{{{ SQRT {area } }}}} of maximum size graphite inputting Murakami and Endo's formula.

  • In this study, fatigue limit of ductile cast iron is evaluated based on phenomena of the microscopic observation, such as matrix structure, spheroidal ratio, size of graphite and distribution. Three different ferrite-pearlite matrix structure, GCD 45-), GCD 50, GCD 60 series, all of which contain more than 70% spheroidal ratio of graphite, were used to obtain the correlation between maximum size of graphite and fatigue strength. It was concluded as fellows. (1) In Ductile cast iron of ferrite-pearlite matrix, the fatigue limit of GCD 60 series with 73% pearlite structure was the highest. (2) From observation of the starting point of crack of all specimens, it is noted that the crack initiates, in graphite, goes through ferrite and propagates into pearlite. (3) A good quality of Ductile cast iron used in this experiment can be checked from uniformly distributed graphite. The negligible interaction effect between graphites was verified by microscopic observation and fracture mechanics investigation in surface and interior of the specimen.

  • This study has been performed to investigate MRR(metal removal rate) surface roughness with various pulse-on duration using the copper and graphite electrode according to the electrode size on the heat treated STD 11 which is extensively used for metallic molding steel in the EDM. The results obtained are as follow ;a)MRR increases a lot when pulse-on duration is 100 $\mu{s}$ or less but MRR has little difference with pulse-on duration of 100 $\mu{s}$ or more b) According to the increase of Pulse-on duration the large the electrode size the more MRR c) Safe discharge is needed to make maximum of MRR and the metallic organization must be complicated for discharge induction. d) Actual machining time is longer than theoretical machining time at the short pulse-on duration because of skin effect of current. e) Graphite electrode needs the larger electric discharge energy than copper electrode to remove remained chips completely.

  • Flake graphite cast irons with the high damping capacity have been used for the control of vibration and noise occuring in the members of various mechanical structures under vibrating conditions. However, the damping capacity which is morphological characteristics of graphite is one of the important factors in reducing the vibration and noise, but hardly any work has deal with this problem. Therefore, the authors have examined the damping capacity of various cast irons with alloying elements and studied the influences of the matrix, mechanical properties and morphological characteristics of graphite. The main results obtained are as follows: Effects of Ni on the damping capacities and mechanical properties are investigated in 3.9%C-0.3% Cu gray cast iron. At 0.2% Ni content, specific damping capacity showed the maximum value, and decreased with further increase in Ni content, Graphite continuity also showed same behavior. This indicates that the specific damping capacity has a close relation with graphite continuity. On the other hand, the damping capacity in pearlite matrix showed superior to that in ferrite. In contrast, with increasing the Ni content, both tensile strength and hardness increased due to the decrease of graphite length and eutectic cell size.

  • The ablation dynamics and cluster formation of $C_n^+$ ions ejected from 355 nm laser ablation of a graphite target in vacuum are investigated using a reflectron time-of-flight (RTOF) mass spectrometer. At low laser fluence, odd-numbered cluster ions with $3{\leq}n{\leq}15$ are predominantly produced. Increasing the laser fluence shifts the maximum size distribution towards small cluster ions, implying the fragmentation of larger clusters within the hot plume. The temporal evolution of $C_n^+$ ions was measured by varying the delay time of the ion extraction pulse with respect to the laser irradiation, providing significant information on the characteristics of the ablated plume. Above a laser fluence of $0.2J/cm^2$ , large cluster ions ($n{\geq}30$) are produced at relatively long delay times, indicating that atoms or small carbon clusters aggregate during plume propagation. The dependence of the intensity of ablated $C_n^+$ ions on delay time after laser irradiation shows that the most probable velocity of each cluster ion decreases with cluster size.

  • In order to study the infuence of Sb addition on the compacted vermicular graphite cast iron(C/V) and gray cast iron(GC), these specimen which had different Sb content(0-0, 1wt.%) were prepared. these specimen were tested for microstructure and mechanical properties. The result from this study are as follows. For C/V and GC, the microstructure of graphite appeared to be finer with increasing Sb content more than 0.06wt.% Ferrite disappeared from the matrix with addition of Sb more than 0.06wt.% in GC and more than 0.08wt.% in C/V. The size of the eutectic cell in GC was 4.5 to 7 times larger than that in C/V, but the decreasing tendancy of its size was more remarkable in GC than in C/V with increasing Sb content. The abrasion speed corresponding to the maximum amount of abrasion in the nabrasion test was found to be 1.37m/sec. GC sample weared 3.6 to 21 times faster than those of C/V did. the amount of abrasion demeased remarkably with Sb addition, and the abrasion rate was constant with Sb content over 0.04wt.%

  • Dyeing wastewaters are the most problematic wastewater in textile industries and also, growing amounts of waste fibers in carpet industries have concerned environmental specialists. Among different treatment methods, membrane filtration processes as energy-efficient and compatible way, were utilized for several individual problems. In this research, novel hybrid membranes were prepared by waste fibers of mechanical carpets as useful resource of membrane matrix and industrial graphite powder as filler to eliminate Chrysophenine GX from dyeing wastewater. These membranes were expected to be utilized for first stage of hybrid membrane filtration process including (adsorption-ultrafiltration) and nanofiltration in Kashan Textile Company. For scaling of membrane filtration process, fouling mechanism of these membranes were recognized and explained by the use of genetic algorithm, as well. The graphite increased rejection and diminished permeate flux at low concentration but in high concentration, the performance was significantly worsened. Among all hybrid membranes, 18% wt. waste fibers-1% wt. graphite membrane had the best performance and minimum fouling. The maximum pore size of this optimum membrane was ranged from 16.10 to 18.72 nm.
