This study compares and analyzes inorganic components of four different Pu-erh tea species consumed in Korea. The criteria for the inorganic components was based on the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) recommendations. Out of the 19 general items: potassium, manganese, silicon and fluorine were detected in amounts exceeding the maximum allowable concentration by 5~23, 57~91, 1.6~1.8 and 9~18 times respectively. Out of the 15 potentially harmful elements: aluminum and nickel were exceeded the Maximum allowable concentration by 9~14 times and 0.8~1.2 times respectively. To reduce the concentration of inorganic elements in excess of the maximum allowable concentration, the extraction time of tea should be less than 1 minute in addition to limiting the amount. The amount of Pu-erh tea for extraction was about 0.1 g manganese, about 0.3 g potassium, about 0.5 g fluoride and about 2 g silicon. Therefore, the maximum amount of tea for extraction should be 0.1 g in regards to the safety of Pu-erh tea. Based on the recommended maximum daily intake of inorganic ingredients by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, it is desirable that the number of extractions be less than three.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments in 2004 to prevent the transfer of aquatic organisms via ballast water. Thirty-four ballast water treatment systems were granted IMO active substance basic approval, among which twenty systems were granted final approval. This paper is an in-depth consideration of the mechanism principles of the treatment systems that received active substance basic or final approval from IMO, and on the concentration of Total Residual Oxidant (TRO). The TRO maximum allowable discharge concentration was reduced by neutralization equipment, resulting with a concentration lower than 0.2 ppm. However, between various treatment systems TRO maximum allowable dosage showed large differences, ranging from 1 to 15 ppm. The discrepancies of treatment allowable dosage concentration between different treatment systems are largely due to the properties of species and water conditions such as the temperature and turbidity, rather than the characteristics of treatment systems and the type or presence of filters etc.

BACKGROUND: The concern over heavy metal(loid)s in arable land and agricultural products increases for public health in recent years. This study aims to identify transition characteristics of heavy metal(loid)s and to assess dietary risk in barley grown at the major producing districts in Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: The soil and barley samples were collected from 38 locations around the major producing districts at Jeollabuk-do in Korea for the propose of examining the concentrations of heavy metal(loid)s. The 34 barley samples were separately purchased on the market for the same survey. The average concentration and range of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in barley grown at the major producing districts in Korea were 0.037 (0.016-0.094), 0.028 (0.004-0.083) and 0.137 (0.107-0.212) mg kg-1, respectively. Currently, the maximum allowable level for barley Pb is set at 0.2 mg kg-1 in Korea, and the monitoring results suggested that some samples exceeded the maximum allowable level and required appropriate farming management. Bio-concentration factor values by heavy metal(loid)s in barley were high at Cd, copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), similar to other crops, while As and Pb were low, indicating low transferability. CONCLUSION: Human exposure to As, Cd and Pb through dietary intake of barley might not cause adverse health effects due to relatively low concentrations, although the Pb in some barley was detected higher than the maximum allowable level. Further study on uptake and accumulation mechanism of Pb by barley might be required to assess the human health risk associated with soil contamination.
This study was conducted to develop a lignite coal heater which can be used to livestock facilities and to test performance of the heater developed. Experimental results are as following: 1. Heating capacity of the heater was 85,000 kcal/h. 2. The concentrations of CO gas in the exhaust gas were the maximum of 759 ppm and the average of 319 ppm; for the concentrations of NOx, the maximum of 212 ppm and the average of 57 ppm ; for the concentrations of SO2 gas, the maximum of 302 ppm and the average of 99 ppm. As the values were less than the allowable concentration limites, they did not violate the air environment law. 3. Problems such as frequent interruption of fuel supply and bridge state were happened. Therefore, it was required that these should be resolved in the future.
In order to investigate and generalize the effects of carbon and nitrogen sources on the growth of and lipid production in Chlorella sp. 227, several nutritional combinations consisting of different carbon and nitrogen sources and concentrations were given to the media for cultivation of Chlorella sp. 227, respectively. The growth rate and lipid content were affected largely by concentration rather than by sources. The maximum specific growth was negatively affected by low concentrations of carbon and nitrogen. There is a maximum allowable inorganic carbon concentration (less than 500~1,000 mM bicarbonate) in autotrophic culture, but the maximum lipid content per gram dry cell weight (g DCW) was little affected by the concentration of inorganic carbon within the concentration. The lipid content per g DCW was increased when the microalga was cultured with the addition of glucose and bicarbonate (mixotrophic) at a fixed nitrogen concentration and with the lowest nitrogen concentration (0.2 mM), relatively. Considering that lipid contents per g DCW increased in those conditions, it suggests that a high ratio of carbon to nitrogen in culture media promotes lipid accumulation in the cells. Interestingly, a significant increase of the oleic acid amount to total fatty acids was observed in those conditions. These results showed the possibility to induce lipid production of high quality and content per g DCW by modifying the cultivation conditions.
A stable desalination method of the hardness substance such as $Ca^{2+}$ by controlling the total charge (TC) supplied to the membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) cell was studied. The adsorption (1.5 V) and desorption (0.0 V) were repeated 30 times while varying the TC in the adsorption process. The concentration and pH of effluent, adsorption and desorption amounts, current densities and cell potentials were analyzed in the desalination process. The maximum allowable charge (MAC) of the carbon electrode used in MCDI cell was measured to be 46 C/g. As a result of operation at TC (40 C/g) below the MAC value, electrode reactions did not occur, resulted in the stable desalination characteristics for a long-term operation. When operating at TCs (50, 60 C/g) above the MAC value, however, the concentration and pH of effluent varied greatly. Also, the scale was formed on the electrode surface due to electrode reactions, and the electric resistance of the cell gradually increased. It was thus concluded that it is possible to remove stably the hardness substance without any electrode reactions by controlling the charge supplied to MCDI cell during the adsorption process.
Among the biodegradable liquid waste treatment and disposal methods, ocean dumping is a cost-effective and productive manner considering reuse point of view However, when biodegradable liquid waste is dumped in the ocean, oxygen consumption by the decomposition of organic matter must be considered. The purpose of this study is to determine the maximum allowable concentration and dumping rate in the southern waters of the East Sea based on dissolved oxygen level. Streeter and Phelps' model has been used to determine the maximum allowable concentration. Factors in this model, deoxygenation constants and reaeration coefficients, have been determined by appling oxygen consumption method and closed system model. Deoxygenation constants and reaeration coefficients from surface to each standard depth are $0.24\~0.29/day\;and\;0.03\~0.39/day$ in summer, $0.17\~0.20/day\;and\;0.04\~0.56/day$ in winter, respectively. The allowable organic matter concentration($mgBOD/\iota$) to the dissolved oxy-gen sag value of $5mg/{\iota}$ is represented $17.23\times(H)^{-0.37}$ in summer, and $64.96\times(H)^{-0.52}$ in winter by mixing depth(H, m). Csanady's experiment has been applied to estimate the optimum dumping rate. The optimum dumping rate($R,\;m^3/sec$) can be written as a product of the beam(b, m) and the draft(h, m) of vessel, and biochemical oxygen demand of waste($L_n,\;mg/{\iota}$) $R=275{\times}bh^{0.63}L_n^{-1}$ in summer $=745{\times}bh^{0.48}L_n^{-1}$ in winter. The difference of dumping rate between in summer and winter is due to the oxygen distribution.
The solar evaporation method is one of the most important and popular salt manufecturing method in Korea. The rate of evaporation of sea water depends on a complex climate factors. Of these factors, the most important is solar radiation and in particular the extent to which it is absorbed in the brine. By the addition of suitable dyestuff, a further increase in absorption is obtained and can result in all the radiation entering the brine being made available as heat. "Solivap Green", one of several dyestuffs which have been suggested for accelerating solar evaporation, was tested in this experiment. The results of the experiment. 1. Increase the evaporation rate of brine up to 20-25%. 2. Elevate the temperature of brine 2-$4^{\circ}C$. higher than that of brine adding no dyestuff. 3. Optimum dyestuff concentration is 25-30 mg/L and allowable maximum concentration can not exceeded 1000 mg/$m^2$ (50 mg/L). 4. Addition of dyestuff does not cause the degradation of salt produced. 5. A conversion table which indicates the concentrations for various depths of brine was prepared for engineering purpose. 6. Absorption spectrum of the dyestuff was studies, but toxicological and structural studies for the dyestuff have not been done in this experiment.
Water quality analysis in the midstream of the Nakdong river is studied. Deterministic model RQ1 which contains two code, RQ1-1 for hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and RQ1-2 for water quality analysis are developed. Monthly mean and minimum discharges in the basin (from Waegwan to Jindong) are estimated. A varied flow analysis is performed based on the geometric data of channel and RQ-1 model. The maximum concentration of BOD and minimum concentration of DO are occurred at the confluence of Keumho river and immediately downstream of Hyunpoong, respectively. The computed concentrations of BOD at several points have good agreements with observed data. Maximum allowable BOD loads from the Keumho River are provided to attain the goal of water quality in the basin.

The buildup of fission product, i.e. Xe-135 poisoning, is a prime factor in restarting a nuclear reactor from the shutdown, which was under normal operation in the high flux thermal reactor, It is caused by the high absorption crosssection of Xe-135 to thermal neutrons and its long half life, from which the thermal power is affected. It is then possible to restart a nuclear reactor after the sufficient excess reactivity to override this poisoning must be inserted, or its concentration is decreased sufficiently when its temporary shutdown is required. As ratter of fact, these have an important influence not only on reactor safety but also on economic aspect in operation. Considering these points in this study, the shutdown process was cptimized using the Pontryagin's maximum principle so that the shutdown mirth[d was improved as to restart the reactor to its fulpower at any time, but the xenon concentration did not excess the constrained allowable value during and after shutdown, at the same time all the control actions were completed within minimum time from beginning of the shutdown.
