  • Hole transport copolymers consisting of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and N-4-butylphenyl-N,N-diphenylamine (BTPA) were synthesized by oxidative coupling reaction using $FeCl_3$ as an oxidant. These copolymers showed good solubility and their thin films showed sufficient morphological stability. The copolymers showed an absorption maximum around 320 nm. Copolymers had an oxidation peak at approximately $1.03{\sim}1.14V$ versus the Ag/AgCl electrode. The hole mobility increased with increasing portion of the EDOT unit. The hole mobility of the copolymer containing 57% of the EDOT unit showed the highest mobility of $3{\times}10^{-5}cm^2/V{\cdot}s$.

  • A comparative study of the new flexible double hull structure is presented as a collision energy absorbing system, which is constructed with mixed stringers comprising slant and straight stringers for the double hull tanker, The dimension and disposition of this mixed stringers are selected to give the maximum absorbing energy. From the viewpoint of collision energy absorbing efficiency, this structural system is compared with three other types of the double hull constructions with trapezoidal stiffener, stringer type and standard type of VLCC, 310K DWT, Based on the constant hull weight, the proposed double hull structure with mixed stringers shows a improved crashworthiness as the results.

  • Two β-diketone derivatives bearing triphenylene (1-naphthalene-2-yl-3-triphenylen-2-yl-propane-1,3-dione (NTPD)) and naphthalene (1,3-di-naphthalene-2-yl-propane-1,3-dione (DNPD)) and their Ln(III) complexes (Ln = Er or Gd) were synthesized and their photophysical properties were investigated. The sensitized emission of Er3+ ion in Er3+-[NTPD]3(terpy) and Er3+-[DNPD]3(terpy) was observed upon excitation at absorption maximum of ligands. Their photophysical studies indicate the sensitization of Er3+ luminescence by energy transfer through the excited triplet state of β-diketone ligand. The energy transfer rate through the excited triplet state of β-diketone ligand to Er3+ ion occurs faster than that of the oxygen quenching rate.

  • The quantum mechanical properties of a series of oligo-para-phenylenes (2-11) were characterized using DFT B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) calculations. The global minimum among the various torsional conformers of an oligo-p-phenylene is calculated to be a twist conformation. A less stable planar conformation, in which all the dihedral angles in oligo-p-phenylene are restricted to be planar, has also been calculated. The total electronic energies, normal vibrational modes, Gibbs free energies, and HOMOs and LUMOs of the two different conformations (twisted and planar) of the oligo-p-phenylenes were analyzed. The energy differences between the HOMOs and LUMOs of the substrates are in accord with the maximum absorption peaks of the experimental UV spectra of 2-6. The calculated normal vibrational modes of 2-6 were comparable with their experimental IR spectra.

  • To improve the mechanical properties, dimensional stability and blood compatibility, the biomedical material $Pellethene^{(R)}$ was blended with multiblock polyurethane (MPU) containing phospopholipid/long alkyl chain (C-18) at the various MPU contents and crosslinked using dicumyl peroxide as a crosslinking agent. The maximum MPU content for stable $Pellethene^{(R)}$/MPU blended films was approximately 30 wt%. The optimum crosslinking agent content and crosslinking time with respect to the mechanical properties were 4 wt% and 3 h, respectively. The mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break) and water absorption of the crosslinked blend film increased with increasing MPU content. The test of platelet adhesion on the surfaces of the crosslinked blend film showed a decrease in the level of platelet adhesion from 70% to 6% with increasing MPU content from 0 to 30 wt%. These results suggest that the crosslinked $Pellethene^{(R)}$/MPU-30 (MPU content: 30 wt%) sample has strong potential as a novel material for blood compatible material applications.

  • This paper reports the first success in enhancement of the magneto-optic figure of merit of garnet films in blue wavelengths. The maximum of the absolute value of the Faraday rotation angle observed at about 500 nm for the films with no La substitution shifted toward shorter wavelength as La content increased, that leads the increase of the absolute value of the Faraday rotation angle in the wavelengths shorter than about 480 nm. The optical absorption coefficient at the wavelengths shorter than 500 nm decreased as La content increased. As a result the magneto-optic figure of merit increased in the wavelengths shorter than 470 nm as La content increased and was about two times larger for the film with La content of 0.6 in formular unit compared to that of the film without La substitution. This might be attributed to the shift of the centers of the charge transfer and crystal field transitions by La substitution.

  • To develop a new anti-wrinkle agent from medicinal plants, this study investigated the optimal conditions for extracting elastase inhibitor from Rheum undulatum L. Maximal extraction occurred by using 70% methanol at $50^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr; the elastase inhibitory activity was 60.4%($IC_{50}:6.7{\times}10^3{\mu}g/m{\ell}$). Systematic solvent extraction, thin layer chromatography, silica gel column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, and reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography were used in the partial purification of the elastase inhibitor. The compound was soluble in dimethylsulfoxide, methanol, and ethanol, and had maximum absorption spectra at 231.5 nm and 275.5 nm.

  • Under light collision accidents, the energy absorption strategy for the coupler and expansion tube of the TTX(Tilting Train Express) initial design is established in the paper. Also, 1st shearing bolts are designed. When the absorbed energy of the coupler reaches its maximum, the connecting bolts between the coupler and the car body are sheared off not to transmit the impact force to the car body structure. To absorb more energy after the lst shearing bolts work, a expansion tube is designed conceptually and installed at the rear part of the coupler. Using Hyper-Mesh and LS-DYNA, pre/post processing and light collision analyses are preformed, respectively.

  • An optimum parasitic inductance is observed for maximizing the modulation bandwidth of the multiple quantum well (MQW) electro-absorption optical modulator. For 1.1 pF device cpaacitance of the current MQW optical modulator, the optimum parasitic inductances for maximum bandwidth are calculated for different terminating resistors. In ase of 50.ohm. terminating resistor, the 3-dB modulation bandwidth can be increased 45% wider by using the optimum parasitic inductance than nothing parasitic inductance. This calculated optimum inductance can be practically implemented, since the parasitic inductance of bondwires can be accurately analyzed using the method of moments (MoM) and controlled by changing the length and shpae of bondwires.

  • Novel naphthyl-containing biphenyl analogues were prepared by Suzki reaction for the chemiluminescent blue fluorophores. UV-Vis absorption, photoluminescence, chemiluminescence and CIE chromaticities were measured. The fluorophores displayed blue photoluminescence in solution with a maximum intensity around 378-415 nm. Sodium salicylate-catalyzed reaction of them with bis(2 carbopentyloxy-3,5,6-trichlorophenyl)-oxalate with hydrogen peroxide provided a strong chemiluminescent red light emission with wavelengths of 398-427 nm; these were similar to the photoluminescent spectra. The chemiluminescent intensity decayed exponentially and the glow of chemiluminescence, which was visible with naked eyes, was maintained for more than 4 h.
