  • In the present study, the improvement of absorption characteristics on combined heat and mass transfer process in a falling film of a vertical absorber by change of geometric parameters were studied experimentally and analytically. The energy and diffusion equations are solved simultaneously to give the temperature and concentration variations at the liquid solution-refrigerant vapor interface and at the wall. Absorption behaviors of heat and mass transfer were analyzed through falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by refrigerant vapor in the absorber. Effects of film Reynolds number, geometric parameters by insert device (spring) and flow pattern on heat and mass transfer performances have been also investigated. Especially, effects of the flow pattern by geometric parameters have been considered to observe the total heat and mass transfer rates through falling film along the absorber. As a numerical and experimental result, maximum absorption rate was shown at the wave-flow by insert device (spring). The error ranges between experiment and analysis were from 5.8 to 12% at Re$_{f}$ > 100.0.

  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate the absorbing characteristics in a vertical falling film type absorber using LiBr-H$H_2O$ solution as working fluids with the concentration of 60 wt%. The experimental apparatus consists of an absorber with the diameter of 17.2 mm and the length of 1150 mm, a generator, an evaporator (condenser), a weak solution tank and a sampling trap device and so on. The parameters were the solution temperatures of 45 and 50$^{\circ}$C, coolant temperatures of 30 and 35$^{\circ}$C, and the film Reynolds numbers from 50 to 150. The pressure drop in the absorber increased as the solution and coolant temperatures decreased. The pressure drop in the absorber increased up to the film Reynolds number of 90, however, decreased at the film Reynolds number above 90. The maximum absorption mass flux was observed at the film Reynolds number of 90. Absorption mass fluxes increased as the coolant temperature decreased. Accordingly, absorption mass fluxes and heat transfer coefficients under the subcooled condition increased more than those under the superheated condition. It is claimed that heat transfer coefficients are deeply affected by the solution temperature more than the coolant temperature within the experimental range.

  • This paper reports on the energy absorption characteristics of a lattice-web reinforced composite sandwich cylinder (LRCSC) which is composed of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) face sheets, GFRP lattice webs, polyurethane (PU) foam and ceramsite filler. Quasi-static compression experiments on the LRCSC manufactured by a vacuum assisted resin infusion process (VARIP) were performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed cylinders. Compared with the cylinders without lattice webs, a maximum increase in the ultimate elastic load of the lattice-web reinforced cylinders of approximately 928% can be obtained. Moreover, due to the use of ceramsite filler, the energy absorption was increased by 662%. Several numerical simulations using ANSYS/LS-DYNA were conducted to parametrically investigate the effects of the number of longitudinal lattice webs, the number of transverse lattice webs, and the thickness of the transverse lattice web and GFRP face sheet. The effectiveness and feasibility of the numerical model were verified by a series of experimental results. The numerical results demonstrated that a larger number of thicker transverse lattice webs can significantly enhance the ultimate elastic load and initial stiffness. Moreover, the ultimate elastic load and initial stiffness were hardly affected by the number of longitudinal lattice webs.

  • The physical shape of an ultrasound transducer has not been considered in previous studies of the photoacoustic saturation effect, where a photoacoustic signal's magnitude linearly increases as an absorption coefficient increases and it is finally saturated. In this paper, the effect of a spherically focused ultrasound transducer on photoacoustic nonlinearity is investigated. The focused ultrasound transducer's spatial filtering effect on photoacoustic signals is analytically derived considering the combined concept of a virtual point detector and Green function approach. The ultrasound transducer's temporal response (i.e., transfer function) effect on photoacoustic signals is considered by integrating photoacoustic signal values within the absorption area covered by a spatial resolution of the ultrasound transducer. Results from the analytically derived expression show that the magnitude of photoacoustic signals measured by a spherical focused ultrasound transducer shows a maximum at a specific absorption coefficient, and decreases after that maximum point as an absorption coefficient is increased. The origin of this photoacoustic nonlinearity is physically understood by comparing the ultrasound transducer's transfer functions and photoacoustic resonance spectra. In addition, this physical interpretation implies that the photoacoustic nonlinearity is strongly dependent on the irradiance distribution inside an absorption medium.

  • In this study, the carbonized boards were manufactured from different types of wood-based panel and then their moisture absorption/desorption properties were investigated and compared. The carbonization temperature was maximum $600^{\circ}C$ with 2 h maintains. Test results showed higher absorption/desorption capacity on carbonized plywood than carbonized MDF, PB, and OSB, respectively. However, carbonized MDF, OSB, and plywood had similar absorption/desorption rate per hour. It means carbonized OSB and plywood can transfer moisture into deeper side and then possibly hold more amount of water. Based on SEM images, carbonized OSB and plywood showed more like wood structure, while carbonized MDF and PB had only wood fiber or/and chunk of wood fragments. Therefore, original wood structure may affect moisture absorption/desorption capacity. In order to manufacture high moisture absorbing/desorbing carbonized board, wood structure should be considered and then carbonized.

  • Using the sbsorption coefficients and the weighting factors of the gray gas, the total emissivities of C $O_{2}$- $H_{2}$O and C $O_{2}$- $H_{2}$O- transient species-soot gas mixtures can be expressed by the following equation, [a numerical formula] Where, $a_{i}$ and $K_{i}$ represent the weighting factor and the absorption coeffient of i-gray gas respectively; L is the pathlength of the gas. This equation is widely used for the analyses of the radiation heat transfer in the combustors of internal combustion engines and in the furnace of external combustion engines. In this work, a simple calculation model of the weighting factor and the absorption coeffient of the above equation was developed. The weighting factors and the absorption coefficients of combustion products were calculated by applying the model to various kinds of fossil fuels such as coal and heavy oil. Then, the computed total emissivities for each fuel and pathlength were compared with measured and calculated values which have been already published in the literatures. The followings were the results obtained through the comparisons between the calculated emissivites and the published values; the developed model for the calculations of the weighting factor and the absorption coefficient of C $O_{2}$- $H_{2}$O and C $O_{2}$- $H_{2}$O- transient species-soot gas mixtures could be applied over the wide ranges of the temperature and the pathlength; the errors between the total emissivities calculted and the values published were maximum 10%, and average 1%, respectively.

  • We evaluated the effect of CO2 offsetting by estimating changes in carbon uptake under various forest management scenarios and proposed forest management strategies to achieve carbon neutrality. Paju and Goseong, which have relatively large forest areas but different industrial characteristics, were selected for the study sites. The current state of forest distribution was analyzed using forest type maps and aerial photographs, and the amount of carbon uptake was calculated using the equation presented by the IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories and the national emission/absorption coefficients from the Korea National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report. As of 2015, the forest carbon absorption in Paju and Goseong was 49,931 t/yr and 94,225 t/yr, respectively, and the annual carbon absorption per unit area was 2.28 t/ha/yr and 2.16 t/ha/yr. Under the forest management scenarios, the annual maximum carbon absorption per unit area is estimated to increase to 5.68 t/ha/yr in Paju and 4.22 t/ha/yr in Goseong, and this absorption would increase further if urban forests were additionally created. Even if the current forests of Paju and Goseong are maintained as they are, emissions from electricity use can be sufficiently offset. However, by applying appropriate forest management strategies, emissions from sectors other than electricity use could be offset. This study can be applied to the establishment of carbon absorption strategies in the forest sector to achieve carbon neutrality.

  • The duality of recycled fine aggregate (RS) which was produced at the waste concrete crushing was investigated. The compressive strength, flexural strength and absorption of mortar utilized with RS were examined. It was evaluated on the application of RS as precast concrete aggregate. The density and absorption of RS were $2.31g/cm^3$ and 8.07% respectively, the quality of RS was satisfied with the criterion of KS F 2573 type 2. The maximum 28days compressive strength of mortar mixed with blended cement MRS1, MRS2 and MRS3 were developed with 15.8, 27.4 and 48.7MPa respectively, in condition to curing temperature $40^{\circ}C$ and water-cement ratio 37.5%. When blended cement MRS1 and MRS2 were used, the maximum flexural strength of mortar was developed at curing temperature $40^{\circ}C$ and water-cement ratio 35.0%. When blended cement MRS3 was used, the maximum flexural strength of mortar was developed at curing temperature $40^{\circ}C$ and water-cement ratio 37.5%. The absorption of mortar mixed with blended cement MRS1, MRS2 and MRS3 were indicated the range of $8.3{\sim}7.3%,\;6.5{\sim}8.5%$ and $3.5{\sim}6%$ respectively. Therefore, when the ratio of blended cement and RS is appropriately centre]led, it would be expected that MRS1, MRS2 and MRS3 will be able to apply the variable low strength, medium strength and high strength precaste concrete.

  • In order to obtain necessary data for the use of hydrophytes to improve water quality of artificial lakes, production and nutrients absorption by some macrohydrophytes were investigated in a small water course at Woongcheon, Chungnam Province. The maximum above-ground standing biomass of Phragmites communis, Typha angustifolia and Zizania latifolia stand were 3,504 g/m$x^2$, 2,834 g/m$x^2$ and 3,125 g/m$x^2$, respectively. Estimated below-ground standing biomass of each stand were 9,671 g/m$x^2$,5,158 g/m$x^2$ and 5,813 g/m$x^2$, respectively. Concentration of nutrients in each organ was different among plant species. Maximum amount of standing nitrogen was the highest in the reed stand and that of standing phosphorus was the highest in the cattail stand. Amount of maximum standing nutrients are 2795.6 kgN/ha and 42.5 kgP/ha for the reed stand, 1,413 kg N/ha and 24.8 kgP/ha for the cattail stand and 1.901.1 kgN/ha and 38.4 kgP/ha for the wild rice stand, respectively. According to our investigation, it is concluded that reed, cattail and wild rice are suitable for water quality improvement of artificial lakes through nutrients absorption.

  • ISB (Inner structured and bonded) panel with a pyramidal inner structure is actively developing to reduce the weight and to improve the crashworthiness of the material. The objective of this paper is to investigate into the variation of impact characteristics of ISB panels with a pyramidal inner structure according to joining types between skin sheets and inner structures. Several drop impact tests have been performed. In order to examine the impact characteristics at a drawing condition, drawing type of experimental set-up has been proposed. From the results of the experiments, the influence of joining types between skin sheets and the inner structures on the characteristics of the deformation, the energy absorption and the failure has been quantitatively examined. In addition, it has been shown that maximum load decreased and the maximum displacement increases as the joining type changes from the bonding to the welding. The results of the observation of the specimen have been shown that major wrinkles form in the minor crimping direction irrespective of the joining types. Through the comparison of the experimental results for bonding and welding specimens, it has been shown that the absorption energy of the bonded specimen is nearly 1.3-1.5 times of the welded specimen at the same displacement.
