Nineteen japonica and Tongil-type rices were selected from seventy nine Korean and Japanese rice cultivars grown in 1989 based on the water uptake behavior of milled rice under the room temperature and boiling conditions. The selected rice cultivars were investigated for water absorbability and some physicochemical characteristics of milled rice, proper water amount for cooking and sensory evaluation of cooked rice. The relationships among the tested grain properties were also examined. The highest varietal variation of water uptake rate was observed at twenty minutes after soaking in water. The maximum water uptake of milled rices at room temperature occurred mostly at about eighty minutes after soaking in water. Newly harvested rices showed a significantly lower water uptake rate of milled rice at 20 minutes after soaking, a relatively higher maximum water absorption ratio under the room temperature, and the less water uptake and volume expansion of boiled rice compared with the one-year old rice samples. The water uptake rate and the maximum water absorption ratio showed significantly negative correlations with the K/Mg ratio and alkali digestion value(ADV) of milled rice. The rice materials showing the higher amount of hot water absorption exhibited the larger volume expansion of cooked rice. The harder rices with lower moisture content revealed the higher rate of water uptake at twenty minutes after soaking and the higher ratio of maximum water uptake under the room temperature condition. These water uptake characteristics were not associated with the protein and amylose contents of milled rice ansd the palatability of cooked rice. The water/rice ratio(in w/w basis) for optimum cooking was averaged to 1.52 in dry milled rices (12% wet basis) with varietal range from 1.45 to 1.61 and the expansion ratio of milled rice after proper boiling was averaged to 2.63(in v/v basis). The water amount needed for optimum cooking was the lowest in Cheongcheongbyeo (Tongil-type rice) and the highest in Jinbubyeo, and the amount could be estimated with about 70% fittness by the multiple regression formula based on some water uptake characteristics, ADV and amylose content of milled rice as the independent variables. Nineteen rice cultivars were classified into seven groups based on scatter diagram projected by principal component analysis using eight properties related to water uptake and gelatinization of milled rice.

;Jindo Hongju is an unique red-colored traditional distilled wine of Korea. The unique attractive color of Jindo Hongju is due to the pigments of gromwell (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) root, derivatives of naphtoquinone such as shikonin and acetylshikonin. Which are extracted during the distillation process. The attractive color of the gromwell pigments is easily changed to dark red or to brown causing deterioration of the Quality of Jindo Hongju. Due to the discoloration of the pigments and to the limited supply of gromwell roots, some brewers manufacture spurious Jindo Hongju using artificial colorants. This study was performed to devise a simple method of detecting spurious Jindo Hongju products. The color of the gromwell pigments was greatly affected by pH change and the change could be demonstrated by the change of the absorption spectrum. At pH 4.0 the normal pH of Jindo Hongju, the absorption spectra of gromwell pigments and genuine Hongju products showed an absorption maximum of 520 nm. The absorption maximum was shifted to 570 nm and to 616 nm as the pH was raised to 7.0 and 11.0 respectively. This transition due to the pH change was also demonstrated on em chromaticity diagram. The characteristic transition due to pH change of gromwell pigment solution was not observed with an artificial colorant (red No.2) which was suspected to be used in the manufacture of imitation products. The absorption spectra of most of the Jindo Hongju collected from the market were similar to that of the gromwell pigments and showed the characteristic transition due to pH change with the addition of NaOH. However, with a few of the products, the absorption spectra was similar to that of the artificial colorant and the characteristic transition due to pH change was not observed, indicating these products might have been forged. The result of study suggests that the transition of the absorption spectrum and the change of the color due to pH change be used for the detection of imitation products. Farther more, since, at pH above 9.0, the color of the gromwell pigments and genuine Jindo Hongju could be visually differentiated from that of the artificial colorant and forged products, it might be possible that the forged products be easily detected by raising the pH to above 9.0 and visually comparing the color with that of the gromwell pigment at the same pH.me pH.
Since the requirement of the high density integration and thin package technique of semiconductor have been increasing, the main package type of semiconductor will be a chip scale package (CSP). The changes of diffusion coefficient and moisture content ratio of epoxy resin systems according to the change of liquid type epoxy resin and fillers for CSP applications were investigated. The epoxy resins used in this study are RE-304S, RE310S, and HP-4032D, and Kayahard MCD as hardener and 2-methylimidazole as catalyst were used in these epoxy resin systems. The micro-sized and nano-sized spherical type fused silica as filler were used in order to study the moisture absorption properties of these epoxy molding compound (EMC) according to the change of filler size. The temperature of glass transition (Tg) of these EMC was measured using Dynamic Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), and the moisture absorption properties of these EMC according to the change of time were observed at $85^{\circ}C$ and 85% relative humidity condition using a thermo-hygrostat. The diffusion coefficients in these EMC were calculated in terms of modified Crank equation based on Ficks' law. An increase of diffusion coefficient and maximum moisture absorption ratio with Tg in these systems without filler can be observed, which are attributed to the increase of free volume with Tg. In the EMC with filler, the changes of Tg and maximum moisture absorption ratio with the filler content can be hardly observed, however, the diffusion coefficients of these systems with filler content show the outstanding changes according to the filler size. The diffusion via free volume is dominant in the EMC with micro-sized filler; however, the diffusion with the interaction of absorption according the increase of the filler surface area is dominant in the EMC with nano-sized filler.
The amount of evapotranspiration (water absorption) according to wind speed showed the same trend in gold mound (Spiraea × bumalda), Japanese spurge (Pachysandra terminalis), and ivy (Hedera japonica Tobler). All the three plants showed maximum water absorption at 4 m·s-1; water absorption tended to decrease as wind speed decreased. The control group without wind speed treatment had the most amount of water absorption compared with the groups that were subjected to wind exposure. However, the plant growth of all three plants increased to the maximum value when wind speeds were 2 and 1 m·s-1. When comparing the relationship among water absorption, air temperature, and relative humidity, the water absorption of plants tended to be low from May 20 to 26, when air temperature and relative humidity were the lowest. The results of this study will help establish an urban wall-planting system taking building wind into consideration. Further, this study may help in the selection of plant types for ecological parks in windy islands.

A mathematical model for the prediction of carbon-dioxide absorption rate during the transient state of rotary type absorber is developed. The rotary type absorber operates using a fast rotating porous structure and clean water. The model for the transient state rotary type absorbers is based on the steady state model of packed tower absorber. The paper manipulates the operating data of an arbitrary quasi-steady state condition of rotary type absorber for the determination of the coefficients involved in the model developed. The prediction accuracy is evaluated from the measured data of rotary type absorber operated under fast transient state. The measured data include the mole fraction of carbon dioxide in mixed gas and the pressure of absorber. The relative error in carbon dioxide prediction is estimated to be 20% at maximum. The model is successfully applied for the prediction of the behavior of a closed cycle diesel engine.
We report a new red light emitting fluorene-based copolymer, poly{9,9-bis(2'-ethylhexyl)fluorene-2,7-diyl-co-2, 5-bis(2-thienyl-1-cyanovinyl}-1-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-4methoxybenzene-5",5'''-diyl} (PFTCVB). The synthesized copolymers showed the absorption maxima at about 380 nm and the absorption between 425 and 600 nm increased as the fraction of the thiophene-containing monomer (BTCVB) increased. In PL, the emission maxima of the copolymers were red-shifted as the fraction of BTCVB increased, despite the similar absorption characteristics were shown in the UV-visible spectra. The copolymer containing 15 mol% of BTCVB showed a maximum PL and EL emission at 620 and 630 nm.
The effects of mixture of tween 20 and span 20 or span 80 on griseofulvin absorption in rabbit were studied. The plasma concentration of griseofulvin in blood samples was determined by high pressure liquid chromatographic procedure. Griseofulvin suspension with 0.05% surfactant increased mostly drug absorption and produced about two times higher plasma level of griseofulvin than that of the suspension with 1% and 0.1% surfactant. Surfactants with H.L.B. value 4.3 resulted $2.74{\mu}g/ml$ of maximum plasma levels of griseofulvin at 18 hours after its oral administration and surfactants with H.L.B. value 16.7 resulted $0.56{\mu}g/ml$ of peak plasma levels of griseofulvin at 1 hour after its oral administration.
Effects of phenobarbital pretreatment on the pharmacokinetics of enterohepatic recirculating griseofulvin were investigated by comparing normal to bile duct cannulated rats and also the effects of enhanced endogeneous bile flow on the absorption of griseofulvin were studied by means of in situ recirculation method in phenobarbital-pretreated rats. Phenobarbital was administered orally for five days at the dose of 75 mg/kg/day. The influence of phenobarbital pretreatment on the absorption rate constant, area under the plasma concentration-time curve, maximum plasma concentration of orally administered griseofulvin was not found in bile duct cannulated rats. Decreased absorption clearance and apparent partition coefficient of griseofulvin in accordance with the amount of endogeneous bile juice seemed to be due to the decrease of thermodynamic activity of griseofulvin as bile forms the micelle with griseofulvin.

The stress-strain characteristics of compacted bentonite are investigated using experimental triaxial compression test by Hoek-cell. Special attention given to various dry density and water absorption ratio. Based on the test results, it is shown that the stress-strain relationship of compacted bentonite is highly influenced by dry density and water absorption ratio. Also, characteristics of Bentonite is similar to the clay rather than sand. Strength of compressed Bentonite increases with higher dry density. It shows maximum strength value, if in a same condition with dry density and constrain pressure. So we determine that value as the optimistic moisture contents for the maximun strength of compressed Bentonite.
In this paper, the composite damping sheet with electromagnetic wave absorption was developed and studied. The damping sheets with Ni-Zn ferrite, Mn-Zn ferrite and PZT were prepared by mixing, molding and drying. From the characterizing results, the optimal portion of the composite is 1:1:0.1 of Mn-Zn ferrite:Rubber:PZT. The maximum absorption was -30 dB at 860 MHz in the single structure and over -15 dB at 180 MHz and 860 MHz in the two or three layers.
