Purpose: The aim of the current study was to develop a computer-assisted detection system based on a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm and to evaluate the potential usefulness and accuracy of this system for the diagnosis and prediction of periodontally compromised teeth (PCT). Methods: Combining pretrained deep CNN architecture and a self-trained network, periapical radiographic images were used to determine the optimal CNN algorithm and weights. The diagnostic and predictive accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, area under the ROC curve, confusion matrix, and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using our deep CNN algorithm, based on a Keras framework in Python. Results: The periapical radiographic dataset was split into training (n=1,044), validation (n=348), and test (n=348) datasets. With the deep learning algorithm, the diagnostic accuracy for PCT was 81.0% for premolars and 76.7% for molars. Using 64 premolars and 64 molars that were clinically diagnosed as severe PCT, the accuracy of predicting extraction was 82.8% (95% CI, 70.1%-91.2%) for premolars and 73.4% (95% CI, 59.9%-84.0%) for molars. Conclusions: We demonstrated that the deep CNN algorithm was useful for assessing the diagnosis and predictability of PCT. Therefore, with further optimization of the PCT dataset and improvements in the algorithm, a computer-aided detection system can be expected to become an effective and efficient method of diagnosing and predicting PCT.
Low-Rank Representation (LRR) based methods are widely used in many practical applications, such as face clustering and object detection, because they can guarantee high prediction accuracy when used to constructing graphs in graph - based semi-supervised learning. However, in order to solve the LRR problem, it is necessary to perform singular value decomposition on the square matrix of the number of data points for each iteration of the algorithm; hence the calculation is inefficient. To solve this problem, we propose an improved and faster LRR method based on the recently published Fast LRR (FaLRR) and suggests ways to introduce and optimize additional constraints on the underlying optimization goals in order to address the fact that the FaLRR is fast but actually poor in classification problems. Our experiments confirm that the proposed method finds a better solution than LRR does. We also propose Fast MLRR (FaMLRR), which shows better results when the goal of minimizing is added.

The alarming global prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) has catalyzed an urgent need for robust, early diagnostic methodologies. This study unveils a pioneering approach to predicting T2DM, employing the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm, renowned for its predictive accuracy and computational efficiency. The investigation harnesses a meticulously curated dataset of 4303 samples, extracted from a comprehensive Chinese research study, scrupulously aligned with the World Health Organization's indicators and standards. The dataset encapsulates a multifaceted spectrum of clinical, demographic, and lifestyle attributes. Through an intricate process of hyperparameter optimization, the XGBoost model exhibited an unparalleled best score, elucidating a distinctive combination of parameters such as a learning rate of 0.1, max depth of 3, 150 estimators, and specific colsample strategies. The model's validation accuracy of 0.957, coupled with a sensitivity of 0.9898 and specificity of 0.8897, underlines its robustness in classifying T2DM. A detailed analysis of the confusion matrix further substantiated the model's diagnostic prowess, with an F1-score of 0.9308, illustrating its balanced performance in true positive and negative classifications. The precision and recall metrics provided nuanced insights into the model's ability to minimize false predictions, thereby enhancing its clinical applicability. The research findings not only underline the remarkable efficacy of XGBoost in T2DM prediction but also contribute to the burgeoning field of machine learning applications in personalized healthcare. By elucidating a novel paradigm that accentuates the synergistic integration of multifaceted clinical parameters, this study fosters a promising avenue for precise early detection, risk stratification, and patient-centric intervention in diabetes care. The research serves as a beacon, inspiring further exploration and innovation in leveraging advanced analytical techniques for transformative impacts on predictive diagnostics and chronic disease management.

Objectives: Rwanda reported a stunting rate of 33% in 2020, decreasing from 38% in 2015; however, stunting remains an issue. Globally, child deaths from malnutrition stand at 45%. The best options for the early detection and treatment of stunting should be made a community policy priority, and health services remain an issue. Hence, this research aimed to develop a model for predicting stunting in Rwandan children. Methods: The Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey 2019-2020 was used as secondary data. Stratified 10-fold cross-validation was used, and different machine learning classifiers were trained to predict stunting status. The prediction models were compared using different metrics, and the best model was chosen. Results: The best model was developed with the gradient boosting classifier algorithm, with a training accuracy of 80.49% based on the performance indicators of several models. Based on a confusion matrix, the test accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and F1 were calculated, yielding the model's ability to classify stunting cases correctly at 79.33%, identify stunted children accurately at 72.51%, and categorize non-stunted children correctly at 94.49%, with an area under the curve of 0.89. The model found that the mother's height, television, the child's age, province, mother's education, birth weight, and childbirth size were the most important predictors of stunting status. Conclusions: Therefore, machine-learning techniques may be used in Rwanda to construct an accurate model that can detect the early stages of stunting and offer the best predictive attributes to help prevent and control stunting in under five Rwandan children.

This paper studies human activity image classification using deep transfer learning techniques focused on the inception convolutional neural networks (InceptionV3) model. For this, we used UFC-101 public datasets containing a group of students' behaviors in mathematics classrooms at a school in Thailand. The video dataset contains Play Sitar, Tai Chi, Walking with Dog, and Student Study (our dataset) classes. The experiment was conducted in three phases. First, it extracts an image frame from the video, and a tag is labeled on the frame. Second, it loads the dataset into the inception V3 with transfer learning for image classification of four classes. Lastly, we evaluate the model's accuracy using precision, recall, F1-Score, and confusion matrix. The outcomes of the classifications for the public and our dataset are 1) Play Sitar (precision = 1.0, recall = 1.0, F1 = 1.0), 2), Tai Chi (precision = 1.0, recall = 1.0, F1 = 1.0), 3) Walking with Dog (precision = 1.0, recall = 1.0, F1 = 1.0), and 4) Student Study (precision = 1.0, recall = 1.0, F1 = 1.0), respectively. The results show that the overall accuracy of the classification rate is 100% which states the model is more powerful for learning UCF-101 and our dataset with higher accuracy.
Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) modulates cortical excitability beyond the duration of the rTMS trains themselves. Depending on rTMS parameters, a lasting inhibition or facilitation of cortical excitability can be induced. Therefore, rTMS of high or low frequency over motor cortex may change certain aspects of motor learning performance and cortical activation. This study investigated the effect of high and low frequency subthreshold rTMS applied to the motor cortex on motor learning of sequential finger movements and brain activation using functional MRI (fMRI). Three healthy right-handed subjects (mean age 23.3) were enrolled. All subjects were trained with sequences of seven-digit rapid sequential finger movements, 30 minutes per day for 5 consecutive days using their left hand. 10 Hz (high frequency) and 1 Hz (low frequency) trains of rTMS with 80% of resting motor threshold and sham stimulation were applied for each subject during the period of motor learning. rTMS was delivered on the scalp over the right primary motor cortex using a figure-eight shaped coil and a Rapid(R) stimulator with two Booster Modules (Magstim Co. Ltd, UK). Functional MRI (fMRI) was performed on a 3T ISOL Forte scanner before and after training in all subjects (35 slices per one brain volume TR/TE = 3000/30 ms, Flip angle $60^{\circ}$, FOV 220 mm, $64{\times}64$ matrix, slice thickness 4 mm). Response time (RT) and target scores (TS) of sequential finger movements were monitored during the training period and fMRl scanning. All subjects showed decreased RT and increased TS which reflecting learning effects over the training session. The subject who received high frequency rTMS showed better performance in TS and RT than those of the subjects with low frequency or sham stimulation of rTMS. In fMRI, the subject who received high frequency rTMS showed increased activation of primary motor cortex, premotor, and medial cerebellar areas after the motor sequence learning after the training, but the subject with low frequency rTMS showed decreased activation in above areas. High frequency subthreshold rTMS on the motor cortex may facilitate the excitability of motor cortex and improve the performance of motor sequence learning in normal subject.
This study analyzed the items for the Home Economics teacher selection test, which were carried out through the school year 2002 to 2010, based on Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Home Economics Education (H-PCK). Two frameworks were used: (1) H-PCK matrix transformed from the Content Knowledge in Home Economics Education (H-CK) and the Pedagogical Knowledge; (2) Five components of H-PCK. The results of this study were as follows: (1) The test items were classified into H-CK items and H-PCK items from the H-PCK matrix analysis. (2) While the number of items on knowledge of teaching strategies was the highest, no item on knowledge of understanding students was identified. Since the test can be considered as Measurement-Driven Instruction, it will have backward influences on the teacher education program in universities. Thus, if promising and capable new Home Economics teachers are to be recruited, the test items should include all the components of H-PCK.

Steganography based on text generation has become a hot research topic in recent years. However, current text-generation methods which generate texts of normal style have either semantic or syntactic flaws. Note that texts of special genre, such as poem, have much simpler language model, less grammar rules, and lower demand for naturalness. Motivated by this observation, in this paper, we propose a text steganography that utilizes Markov chain model to generate Ci-poetry, a classic Chinese poem style. Since all Ci poems have fixed tone patterns, the generation process is to select proper words based on a chosen tone pattern. Markov chain model can obtain a state transfer matrix which simulates the language model of Ci-poetry by learning from a given corpus. To begin with an initial word, we can hide secret message when we use the state transfer matrix to choose a next word, and iterating until the end of the whole Ci poem. Extensive experiments are conducted and both machine and human evaluation results show that our method can generate Ci-poetry with higher naturalness than former researches and achieve competitive embedding rate.
In a increasingly competitive marketplace, the manufacturing companies have no choice but looking for ways to improve productivity to sustain their competitiveness and survive in the industry. Recently cellular manufacturing has been under discussion as an option to be easily implemented without burdensome capital investment. The objective of cellular manufacturing is to realize many aspects of efficiencies associated with mass production in the less repetitive job-shop production systems. The very first step for cellular manufacturing is to group the sets of parts having similar processing requirements into part families, and the equipment needed to process a particular part family into machine cells. The underlying problem to determine the part and machine assignments to each manufacturing cell is called the cell formation. The purpose of this study is to develop a clustering algorithm based on the neural network approach which overcomes the drawbacks of ART1 algorithm for cell formation problems. In this paper, a generalized learning vector quantization(GLVQ) algorithm was devised in order to transform a 0/1 part-machine assignment matrix into the matrix with diagonal blocks in such a way to increase clustering performance. Furthermore, an assignment problem model and a rearrangement procedure has been embedded to increase efficiency. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated using data sets adopted by prior studies on cell formation. The proposed algorithm dominates almost all the cell formation reported so far, based on the grouping index($\alpha$ = 0.2). Among 27 cell formation problems investigated, the result by the proposed algorithm was superior in 11, equal 15, and inferior only in 1.
Customers have been affected by others' opinions when they make a purchase. Thanks to the development of technologies, people are sharing their experiences such as reviews or ratings through online or social network services, However, although ratings are intuitive information for others, many reviews include only texts without ratings. Also, because of huge amount of reviews, customers and companies can't read all of them so they are hard to evaluate to a product without ratings. Therefore, in this study, we propose a methodology to predict ratings based on reviews for a product. In a methodology, we first estimate the topic-review matrix using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation technic which is widely used in topic modeling. Next, we predict ratings based on the topic-review matrix using the artificial neural network model which is based on the backpropagation algorithm. Through experiments with actual reviews, we find that our methodology can predict ratings based on customers' reviews. And our methodology performs better with reviews which include certain opinions. As a result, our study can be used for customers and companies that want to know exactly a product with ratings. Moreover, we hope that our study leads to the implementation of future studies that combine machine learning and topic modeling.
