  • In the Republic of Korea, mathematics has always been a major blame for huge private expenditures on so-called "private education," which consists of private tutoring and lessons at "private academies of extra curricula." The private spending on out-of-school education often exceeded public expenditures on schools. In 1997, South Korean Ministry of Education reformed curriculum of mathematics along with other subjects to ease the burden of private education. The aim of this curriculum change was to put a boost on individual students' interests, affections and other attributes toward school mathematics. The essential distinctiveness of the new curriculum of mathematics compared with the previous one is as follows: 1. The implementation of so-called "differentiated curriculum" for grades 1-10. 2. 30% reduction of contents in mathematics and the reconciliation of contents. 3. Elective subjects for mathematics for grades 11 and 12. 4. More uses of technology in mathematics teaching. Firstly, we examine the background of the curriculum reform and analyze the new curriculum according to awareness of educational administrators, teaching environments of schools and readiness of mathematics teachers. Then we find out what kinds of problems it has and look for some suggestions for remedies.

  • This paper is to make strides toward an enriched understanding of the difficulties and issues raised by applying the 7th mathematics curriculum to elementary school classrooms. A general overview of the curriculum is presented in line with teaching and learning methods emphasized in the curriculum. Four classroom episodes are presented in brief in order to diagnose the problems in situating the curriculum in elementary mathematics classrooms. These episodes deal with lessons emphasizing activity rather than its associated concepts or principles, overusing multimedia data, pursuing play rather than its associated thinking, and distributing various individual worksheets in the name of differentiated instructional methods. In addition to the episodes, interview data with elementary school teachers also are presented as needed. This paper discusses two aspects of activating the curriculum into elementary mathematics classrooms. One deals with the issues of the curriculum and textbooks themselves, and the other covers those of research trends on mathematics education and teaching practices. This paper finally emphasizes a collaborative working relation among classroom teachers, mathematics educators, and policy makers with their own places and roles.

  • The Hong Kong mathematics curriculum has launched its reform in recent years. It was the first time that a holistic review of syllabi from Primary 1 through Secondary 7 was made. The curriculum development agency also decided to base the reform on sound pedagogical foundations. That was assisted with academic research where the views of various stakeholders were investigated in detail. Surveys were conducted with students, parents, teachers, employers, university professors, and curriculum designers and they give a full picture of mathematics teaching and learning in Hong Kong. The rich data collected should shed light on the development of mathematics curriculum in other regions with similar socio-cultural and educational settings.

  • Curriculum is very important for the future of nation. So, continuous efforts are needed to improve the curriculum. This study looked into the issues and the problems related with the 7th differentiated mathematics curriculum, and gave the message about the methods of implementation. For this, we analyzed the result of the questionnaire survey which consisted in the question about the 7th differentiated mathematics curriculum. 264 high school teachers are participated in this survey. In special, this study gave not only the problem but also the various concrete methods for management of the 7th differentiated mathematics curriculum. We hope that mathematics education members research and argue about the differentiated mathematics curriculum for next curriculum.

  • The investigation of the curriculum in other countries provides meaningful implications to reflect our own curriculum. Since Korea is now under the curriculum revision, international comparative research was conducted with the curricula of Singapore and India to elicit some implications. These two countries were especially chosen because their curricula have not been actively investigated yet. Singapore mathematics curriculum starts the tracking based on students' mathematical ability from the 4th grade, and provides different curricula for the three tracks. This differentiated curriculum provides rich implications to next Korean curriculum which aims to classify the contents based on students' mathematical achievements. Indians, who have contributed significantly in the history of mathematics, have unique mathematics curriculum, remote from so called 'canonical curriculum'. After the U.S. announced the Curriculum and Evaluation Standard for School Mathematics in 1989 and the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics in 2000, many countries benchmarked these NCTM documents, and Korea was no exception. Since each country has their own school system, educational environment, and national mentality, it is not desirable to just adopt the curriculum of other countries. In this regard, Indians who have preserved their own mathematics curriculum can be a model. In sum, when we revise the curriculum, it is required to keep the balance between the open-mindedness to accept the strengths of other curricula, and the conservative attitude to preserve our own characteristics of the curriculum.

  • In case of Korea, while discrete mathematics is included in the traditional school curriculum the 7th Educational Reform adds a new topic of Graph Theory making it an optional subject of highschool mathematics. However, a systematic research on the curriculum of discrete mathematics is still unsatisfactory. This study is focused on comparing the curriculum of discrete mathematics in Korea with that of other countries including the United States, Britain, Japan, and Canada. Consequently, it looks into problems concerning the school curriculum of discrete mathematics in Korea to devise a proper measure to improve.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate various mathematics education improvement or reform movements of Western Europe countries (United Kingdom, Germany, etc.) and the United States of America, to see the effects of those movements on Korean mathematics education circle, and to find a direction of Korean mathematics curriculum design. The third Korean mathematics curriculum was most affected by the new mathematics movement of the United States of America. This movement was emphasizing abstract structure, logical rigorousness and discovery learning of mathematics, which was fired from late fifties. Korean mathematics education circle imported the new mathematics early seventies from USA, but serious problems had been found at that time in USA. This study has pointed out that new math oriented Korean mathematics curriculum was not proper and the new mathematics itself was disastrous for most Korean students' learning. The study also points out that they hurried too much introducing the new mathematics and publishing new mathematics oriented textbooks but they had not sufficient teacher training programs. In our future mathematics curriculum reform, we have to remember such a historical lesson.

  • Teaching and learning in schools can be influenced by the ways in which curriculum is understood in terms of its characteristics and range. Viewing curriculum as encompassing all activities pertaining to teaching and learning allows us to examine various aspects of education through curriculum studies. In this respect, this study explores the trends in research on K-12 mathematics curriculum by examining prior studies' research topics categorized into five themes in curriculum studies. In addition, implications for future research are discussed based on the findings of this study.

  • We know that curriculum is, first of all, related to teaching materials, namely, contents. Therefore, when we think of mathematics curriculum, we must take account of characteristic of mathematics. Vygotsky has studied the development of scientific concepts and everyday concepts. According to Vygotsky, scientific concepts grow down through spontaneous concepts; spontaneous concepts grow upward through scientific concepts. And mathematics is a representative of subjects dealing with scientific or theoretical concept. Therefore, his study provides scientific basis for mathematics curriculum design. In this context, Davydov notes that everyday concepts are developed through empirical abstraction, while scientific concepts require a theoretical abstraction. And Davydov constructed the curriculum materials for the teaching of number concept. Davydov's curriculum is an example of reflecting Vygotsky' theoretical view and his view about the types of abstraction. In particular, it represents mathematical characteristic of a 'science' by introducing number concept through quantitative relationship and use of signs. In conclusion, stance mathematical concepts have scientific characteristic, mathematics curriculum reflects this characteristic.
