  • Starting with the geometrically non-linear formulation and the subsequent linearization, this paper presents a consistent formulation of the exact mechanical analysis of geometrically and materially linear three-layer continuous planar beams. Each layer of the beam is described by the geometrically linear beam theory. Constitutive laws of layer materials and relationships between interlayer slips and shear stresses at the interface are assumed to be linear elastic. The formulation is first applied in the analysis of a three-layer simply supported beam. The results are compared to those of Goodman and Popov (1968) and to those obtained from the formulation of the European code for timber structures, Eurocode 5 (1993). Comparisons show that the present and the Goodman and Popov (1968) results agree completely, while the Eurocode 5 (1993) results differ to a certain degree. Next, the analytical solution is used in formulating a general procedure for the analysis of layered continuous beams. The applications show the qualitative and quantitative effects of the layer and the interlayer slip stiffnesses on internal forces, stresses and deflections of composite continuous beams.

  • An inverse approach is presented for calculating the flexibility coefficient of open-side cracks in the cross sectional of beams. The cracked cross section is treated as a massless rotational spring which connects two segments of the beam. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the differential equation governing the forced vibration of each segment of the beam is written. By using a mathematical manipulation the time dependent differential equations are transformed into the static substitutes. The crack characteristics are then introduced to the solution of the differential equations via the boundary conditions. By having the time history of transverse response of an arbitrary location along the beam, the flexibility coefficient of crack is calculated. The method is applied for some cracked beams with solid rectangular cross sections and the results obtained are compared with the available data in literature. The comparison indicates that the predictions of the proposed method are in good agreement with the reported data. The procedure is quite general so as to it can be applicable for both single-side crack and double-side crack analogously. Hence, it is also applied for some test beams with double-side cracks.

  • This paper consists of two parts, which broadly examines solution techniques abilities for the structures with geometrical nonlinear behavior. In part I of the article, formulations of several well-known approaches will be presented. These solution strategies include different groups, such as: residual load minimization, normal plane, updated normal plane, cylindrical arc length, work control, residual displacement minimization, generalized displacement control, modified normal flow, and three-parameter ellipsoidal, hyperbolic, and polynomial schemes. For better understanding and easier application of the solution techniques, a consistent mathematical notation is employed in all formulations for correction and predictor steps. Moreover, other features of these approaches and their algorithms will be investigated. Common methods of determining the amount and sign of load factor increment in the predictor step and choosing the correct root in predictor and corrector step will be reviewed. The way that these features are determined is very important for tracing of the structural equilibrium path. In the second part of article, robustness and efficiency of the solution schemes will be comprehensively evaluated by performing numerical analyses.

  • This work presents a modified continuum model to explore and investigate static and vibration behaviors of perforated piezoelectric NEMS structure. The perforated nanostructure is modeled as a thin perforated nanobeam element with Euler-Bernoulli kinematic assumptions. A size scale effect is considered by included a nonlocal constitutive equation of Eringen in differential form. Modifications of geometrical parameters of perforated nanobeams are presented in simplified forms. To satisfy the Maxwell's equation, the distribution of electric potential for the piezoelectric nanobeam model is assumed to be varied as a combination of a cosine and linear functions. Hamilton's principle is exploited to develop mathematical governing equations. Modified numerical finite model is adopted to solve the equation of motion and equilibrium equation. The proposed model is validated with previous respectable work. Numerical investigations are presented to illustrate effects of the number of perforated holes, perforation size, nonlocal parameter, boundary conditions, and external electric voltage on the electro-mechanical behaviors of piezoelectric nanobeams.

  • The current study deals with the size-dependent free vibration analysis of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) reinforced polymer nanocomposite plates resting on Pasternak elastic foundation containing different boundary conditions. Based on a four variable refined shear deformation plate theory, which considers shear deformation effect, in conjunction with the Eringen nonlocal elasticity theory, which contains size-dependency inside nanostructures, the equations of motion are established through Hamilton's principle. Moreover, the effective material properties are estimated via the Halpin-Tsai model as well as the rule of mixture. Galerkin's mathematical formulation is utilized to solve the equations of motion for the vibrational problem with different boundary conditions. Parametrical examples demonstrate the influences of nonlocal parameter, total number of layers, weight fraction and geometry of GNPs, elastic foundation parameter, and boundary conditions on the frequency characteristic of the GNPs reinforced nanoplates in detail.

  • The behaviour of steel frames is highly influenced by the beam-column connections. Traditionally, Steel frames were usually designed assuming that connections are ideally pinned or fully rigid. A semi-rigid connection, however, creates a balance between the two extreme approaches mentioned above. In this research, two full scales of Extended End Plate Connections (EEPCs) were tested. Mathematical and numerical models were used to analyse the connections, and close correlations were found between these models and the corresponding tested specimens, which confirmed the confidence in the experimental results. The experimental results obtained enrich the available test data about behaviour of EEPC. In addition, the purpose of studying EEPC experimentally is to compare the stiffness and moment-rotation curve of EEPCs with that of Cap Plate Connections (CPCs), which were tested in a previous work. CPCs have not been studied sufficiently in the literature. The results obtained show that the typical CPC reduces the connection stiffness and these results will make a valuable contribution to the available test data in the research area of CPC.

  • In this article, a free vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) plates resting on elastic foundations is presented using a quasi-3D hybrid-type higher order shear deformation theory. Undetermined integral terms are employed in the proposed displacement field and modeled based on a hybrid-type (sinusoidal and parabolic) quasi-3D HSDT with five unknowns in which the stretching effect is taken into account. Thus, it can be said that the significant feature of this theory is that it deals with only 5 unknowns as the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The elastic foundation parameters are introduced in the present formulation by following the Pasternak (two-parameter) mathematical model. Equations of motion are obtained via the Hamilton's principles and solved using Navier's method. Accuracy of the proposed theory is confirmed by comparing the results of numerical examples with the ones available in literature.

  • In recent years, the quality requirements from the customers of hot rolled steel strip have been steadily increasing in diversity and strictness. To meet these quality requirements as well as to improve productivity, steel mills have been doing their efforts for developing high performance Automatic Gauge Control (AGC) system. However, it is very time consuming and also needs a lot of money to develop the new technologies of AGC in actual mill. So, there has been a demand for developing the Dynamic Hot Rolling Simulator since late 80's. It is a kind of software packages and can analyze the dynamic behaviors of hot finishing rolling process without laborious experiments in actual mill. It can also be used as a designing tool of Automatic Gauge Controller. In this work, the Dynamic Hot Rolling Simulator which is applicable to 6 sands hot strip mill rolling was developed. The MATLAB with SIMLINK was used as a software developer for making the main part of simulator because it is very powerful tool for modeling, integrating, controller design, and simulation. In this paper, the structures and the mathematical models of the simulator were briefly described and the results of simulation on the transient phenomena of hot rolling process with actual mill data were also presented.
