  • This thesis is about a comparative study how they use technology in math education in both Korea and U.S.A. The subjects of investigation are the representative math education journals in Korea and America-Mathlove of Korea and Mathematics Teacher of U.S.A. I have chosen and studied contents that is related to technology in the two journals which were published for 10 years from 1995 to 2004. The followings are the theme of the study. Theme 1 (The situation of environment) : I have examined the usage situation of technology in Korea and America, by studying and analysing the rates and types of sentences contained technology in the two journals. Theme 2 (The situation of substances) : By studying and analysing substances and materials of two journals, I have made a study what changes technology of math education in U.S.A and Korea made for math learning contents and materials. Theme 3 (the situation of methods) : I made a study about how technology has affected the methods of teaching and learning math in both Korea and U.S.A by analysing and studying the methods which they have applied to math education.

  • This study was to investigate the differences of 'math talks' between concept-based storybook reading and context-based storybook reading activities. The teachers carried out storybook reading activities with their children using either four concept-based storybooks or four context-based storybooks. Fifty-six storybook reading activities from seven kindergarten classrooms were observed. The data were collected through participant observations and audio recordings. The transcriptions of 'math talks' during storybook reading activity were classified in terms of the levels of instructional conversation, types of mathematizing, and the mathematical processes involved. The results indicated that the 'math talks' during the concept-based storybook reading activity were higher than those of the context-based storybook reading activity in terms of both the instructional conversation and in quantifying and redescribing of mathematizing. However, the 'math talks' during the context-based storybook reading activity were higher than those of the concept-based storybook reading activity in connecting and reasoning of the mathematical processes involved. These findings suggest that early childhood teachers need to improve the level of instructional conversation during math storybook reading activities.

  • Represent of mathematical formula used within system handling document that is nonstructural in existent document editing system that is used in electron document processing that use computer is represented or processed by method that is nonstructural of image or text or etc. Such mathematical formular causes relative inconvenience to readablility and reusability of document and processing and exchange of document. Therefore, document editing system is required that can overcome such nonadvantage and apply MathML mathematical formula structure on efficiently structural document. Therefore, designed and implemented that document editing system for structural document creation of XML base that can mathematical formular editing of MathML base in this paper.

  • Positive attitude toward mathematics is gaining bigger recognition as an important contributing factor to mathematical ability. As a strategy for strengthening affective domain and betterment of mathematics teaching and loaming, classifying students by their causes for liking or disliking mathematics can be an effective way In this study the author tried to devise methods to classify students by their types of math disliking and investigate correlations between mathematical achievements and these math-disliking types from a sample group of 8th graders. To identify the types of reasons why 8th graders dislike mathematics, a questionnaire with 30 items was made firstly. Then by applying the 'Factor analysis' of SPSS, the 30 items were divided into five partitions. Through abstraction of each partition, five math-disliking types, 'Competences', 'Basics', 'Confidences', 'Usefulness', and 'Teachers' were defined. They are expected to help teachers for describing each student's tendency of math-disliking. Further, correlation coefficients between mathematical achievements and each of the five math-disliking type were investigated against 4 groups which were made from sample group by the discrimination of gender and two levels (high and low) of mathematical achievements in cognitive area. As results, the following facts were found. (i) The trends of correlations between cognitive achievement and the five math disliking types were different across the 4 groups at statistically meaningful degrees. (ii) Most of the male students who had math-disliking types were proved to be in the low achievement level. But for the female students, only 50% of students who had math-disliking types were in the low achievement level. (iii) Compared to male students, higher portion of female students had math-disliking types despite their high achievement in cognitive area.

  • E-learning education methodology using the web has been as much activated with the introduction of the internet to our society. As for the web-based education, there is no exception in case of mathematics. However, when it comes to representing math equations by using HTML image tags, a type of web marked-up language, it can be hard to represent math equations that have structural features, and to do the search, resulting in the difficulty in reusing math related applications. Therefore, based on MathML and using ActiveX control technology, a math equation generating website was designed and implemented in this study. Since this system employed ActiveX control technology, it is possible to generate math equations without the limit of time and place on the web, and to manage the program with the most up-to-dale version. And in this system, it is also possible to save the math equations generated in this system to be referred to for their reuse in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze responses of children and teachers in elementary school to math texts applying storytelling in use, and propose some efficient methods for teaching the noumenon of math concept via storytelling math according to analyzed results. For this purpose, we choose 2nd grade children and teachers in J Province for the effects of the storytelling questionnaire study. The results of the survey lead that most children add zest to the math and most teachers are positive to the storytelling math, however, some of low-level and high-level math children lose their interest in math, and some teachers need some systematic devices to help them understand sufficiently and can teach the storytelling math meaningfully. Therefore, there seems to be needed a program that help children develop the achievement of math and teachers teach the storytelling math expertly.

  • Recently, many kinds of XML based application services are widely used in internet. And the markets for mathml editor are needed for the technology combined with other text editor. We are developing a system for MathML based browser and editor for the service of internet application. MathML based browser is applicable for e-book service and many kinds of document system. This system is composed of document editing module and displaying processing module. This system is useful for the processing of MathML tag by unexperienced users with MathML syntax. Users can edit the math tag's document with ease and efficiently. Based on XML, many parser functions are optimized for the speed of document processing. This system can afford to the development of internet world.

  • The 90 children in this study were grouped with 30 each in the experimental group, and the 2 comparison groups. Research methods over 8 weeks were in the sequence starting from teacher/assistant teacher education, then pretest, followed by development-adaptation of experimental model of math games, and post-test. The experimental group conducted child-initiated math games, comparison group I children proceeded with teacher-initiated math games, and comparison group II children proceeded with co-initiated math games. Statistical evaluation was by ANOVA and ANCOVA. Findings were that the child-initiated math game group scored higher on children's mathematical ability than the two comparison groups. Boys in the experimental group scored higher on children's mathematical ability than girls.

  • In this paper I have tried to find the points which current Math teachers should reconsider in their classes and suggested how to improve the teaching methods in the class. For these answers, I analysed Teaching plans of 30 Math teachers in K province and observed their model classes. The conclusions acquired by these observations are the followings. First, Math teachers should have a great deal of enthusiasm in their classes. Second, Math teachers must understand the curriculum. Third, Math teachers have to understand their students. Fourth, Math teachers should endeavor with other teachers through the workshop. Fifth, Math teachers should be professional and open-minded to make their classes public anytime.
