Objectives:This study investigated the relationship among child's behavior problems, maternal depression, and parenting stress in children with psychiatric diagnoses and their mothers, and the effect of these variables to the mothers' parenting stress. Methods:Seventy-three children(31 externalizing, 24 internalizing, 18 mixed) and their mothers were involved in this study. The mothers of three groups completed MMPI, KPI-C(Korean Personality Inventory for Children), and PSI(Parenting Stress Index). To investigate the relationships among each variables, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, stepwise regression analysis were performed. Results:There was no significant difference in maternal depression among three groups of children. In 2-Way ANOVA, main effect of maternal depression was statistically significant on depression, parent health, and relationship with spouse subfactor in parent domain, parent domain total, and overall parenting stress. But the main effect of child group was statistically significant on distractability/hyperactivity subfactor in child domain only. In regression analysis, maternal depression explained the parent domain of parenting stress most effectively, and child's hyperactivity and anxiety explained the child domain of parenting stress significantly. Conclusion:These findings suggest that it is important to intervene maternal depression to reduce the parenting stress, along with the treatment of the child's behavior problems.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the current trend of early education and to examine the relationship between the state of early education and maternal beliefs, stress, and achievement pressure. The subjects were 275 mothers of 4∼6 year-old children in Seoul. The main results were as follows : 1) Most of the subjects' children(87.6%) were involved in early education, especially in the form of home-visit study and study papers. 2) Parental beliefs (about child development and early education) and maternal achievement pressure were significantly related to the degree of actual involvement and perceived necessity of early education. 3) Parental stress regarding child's temperament was significantly related to the starting age of early education. But the other factors of parental stress had no significant relation to the state of early education.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a workbook program on percieved stress levels, maternal role confidence and breastfeeding practices of mothers of premature infants. Method: This study employed a quasi-experimental non-equivalent pre-and-post test to compare the two groups. Data was collected from 32 subjects from March 10. to September 5, 2003 at an NICU located in S. city. In the sample, fifteen mothers were in the experimental group and seventeen were in the control group. A workbook program was provided twice during a period from two-three days after the baby's admission to one week after the first intervention. The instruments used were the PSS and self confidence scale. Data was analyzed by means of frequency, SD, $x^2-test$, Fisher's exact test, Mann-Whitney test, and the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Result: There was a significant difference in perceived stress levels between the experimental and control group (U=2.366, p=.018). There was not a significant difference in maternal role confidence between the two groups (U=1.002, p=.316). There was a significant difference in breastfeeding practice between the two groups ($x^2=4.910$, p=.035). Conclusion: It is concluded that a program using a workbook has a positive effect on decreasing the perceived stress level and increasing breastfeeding practice.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the mediation effect of value of children in the relationship between maternal parenting stress and ideal number of children and to verify whether perception of the adequacy of national public childcare facilities moderates this mediation relationship. Methods: For the analysis, the 6th year results (2013) from the Panel Study on Korean Children by the Korean Institute of Child Care and Education were used. The main subjects of the study were 1,611 mothers with children aged 60 - 66 months. Results: First, there was a partial mediation effect of mother's parenting stress influencing the ideal number of children through the value of children. Second, the enhancing effect of the perception of the adequacy of national public childcare facilities moderating the value of children and ideal number of children was verified. Third, perception of the adequacy of national public childcare facilities had enforcing effects moderating the value of children and ideal number of children and mediation effects moderating the influence of maternal parenting stress on ideal number of children through the value of children. Conclusion: Based on the results, it was confirmed that the expansion of national public childcare facilities is a factor strengthening the maternal intention of birth.
Maternal stress was one of the common symptoms that pregnant women could have experienced during pregnant period. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation of maternal stress with maternal nutrients intake and pregnancy outcome. Subjects were 248 pregnant women and were recruited at two hospitals in Seoul area. Individual stress levels were divided by the stress scores (total 41 scores), as low stressed group (< 12) and high stressed group (${\geqq}12$). The social characteristics, nutrient intake, anthropometric measurements and pregnancy outcome were compared between low stressed group (LSG) and high stressed group (HSG) to recognize risk factor of maternal stress. We found that subjects experience stress by various factors which were concern about newborn (40.4%), concern about health (28.8%), economic difficulties (13.2%), depress (10.1%), family relationship (2.9%), concern of house work (2.5%), human relationship (2%). In HSG, unemployed rate (p < 0.05) and pre-pregnancy BMI (p < 0.05) were higher than in LSG. Family size in HSG was larger than that in LSG (p < 0.01). Doing regular exercise with the light activity level was significantly higher in LSG (p < 0.05). The nutrient intake in LSG was slightly higher than that in HSG, but not statistically significant. Pregnancy outcome was not significantly affected by the maternal stress. In conclusion, the risk of maternal stress may be related with a life style during pregnancy. Therefore, life style for maternal stress control, such as weight control and regular exercise is recommended to prevent maternal stress.
The purpose of this study was to investigate which variables predicted parenting efficacy. The variables of interest were demographic variables regarding both the infants and mothers, infant temperament and development, maternal parenting knowledge, parenting belief, and parenting stress. The subjects consisted of 260 infants and mothers. Data on infant's temperament, parenting knowledge, parenting belief, parenting stress and parenting efficacy were gathered through maternal self-reported questionnaires. Furthermore, infant development was assessed by classroom teacher. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analyses. Our results indicated that infant's sociability and activity, parenting knowledge about emotional development, parenting beliefs emphasizing the role of nature in infant development, low parenting stress all predicted parenting efficacy.
During the prenatal period, the development of the individual is influenced by a host of environmental factors. Exposure to noise stress during pregnancy was determined to result in the retardation of growth, a reduction in neurogenesis, and an impairment of spatial learning ability in the rat pups. In the present study, we have attempted to characterize the effects of prenatal treatment with Cnidium officinale Makino on spatial memory and neurogenesis in the hippocampus of rat pups born from maternal rats exposed to noise stress during pregnancy. Prenatal treatment with Cnidium officinale Makino was shown to increase neurogenesis and enhanced spatial learning ability in rat pups born from maternal rats exposed to noise stress. In this study, we have determined that prenatal treatment with Cnidium officinale Makino can stimulate spatial development and neurogenesis in the brain of the fetuses exposed to prenatal stresses.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the maternal parenting stress and related variables through early childhood in rural areas (Iksan and Kimpo). The subject were 134 mothers who have less than 5-year old children. The statistics used for this data were freguency, percentile, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. The main results obtained from this study were as follows. The degree of maternal parenting stress differed according to level of mother's education, sex of the child, physical and mental health of the mother, child rearing attitudes, mother's level of self-differentiation, marital satisfaction, and father's parenting support. Results of the regression analysis that the etiologic model of this study were that father's parenting support is the most effective variables in rural areas.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the stability and reciprocal effects of maternal parenting stress and perceived social support in early childhood. Specifically, we compared these relations for working and nonworking mothers. The second through fourth wave data of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) were used in this study. Data were analyzed using t-tests, correlations, and autoregressive cross-lagged modeling analyses. First, parenting stress of non-working mothers was higher than that of working mothers and working mothers perceived higher levels of social support compared to nonworking mothers. Second, both maternal parenting stress and social support were stable over time. Third, there were significant reciprocal effects between maternal parenting stress and perceived social support. Differences between working and non-working mothers were found in the paths from parenting stress to social support. The implications of the stability and reciprocal effects of parenting stress and perceived social support and the difference between working and non-working mothers in the relationship of the two constructs have been discussed.

This study was performed to investigate the effect of Bunsimgieumgagam on the stress due to the maternal separation in rat. In this study, we researched in 'the behavioral observation', 'the changes of body weight', 'quantitative analysis of the number of BrdU-positive cells per section in dentate gyrus of hippocampus', 'free radical scavenging assay' and 'MTT-based cytotoxicity assay of SK-N-SH cell line', in order to figure out the effect on which Bunsimgieumgagam has the increase of neuron in dentate gyrus of hippocampus damaged by the stress due to the maternal separation. In the behavioral Observation, Bunsimgieumgagam was also efficacious against the decline of one's behavior and anorexia derived from the stress by the maternal separation. In the change of body weight, it showed that the Bunsimgieumgagam is effective in the recovery of weight loss caused by heavy stress(p<0.05). Also, Bunsimgieumgagam had an increasing effect, which is similar to a normal state, on DG's neuron in hippocampus (P<0.001). In free radical scavenging assay, Bunsimgieumgagam had a superior free radical scavenging effect. And it showed a significant result with the high cell proliferation effect in MTT-based cytotoxicity assay(P<0.01, p<0.001) This result suggest that Bunsimgieumgagam has an anti-stress effect and a proliferation effect of neuron in dentate gyrus of hippocampus, and it shows the potential of Bunsimgieumgagam in the treatment for the various disorders derived from children's stress.
