This study explored moderating effects of parental rejection on the relationship between corporal punishment and psychological maladjustment of 348 5th and 6th grade elementary school children. Participants responded in school to the Physical Punishment Questionnaire(Rohner, 1997), Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire(Rohner, 1991), and the Personality Assessment Questionnaire(Rohner, 1991). Results of regression analyses showed that both parental punishment and parental rejection made significant contributions to children's psychological maladjustment. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that parental punishment made significant contributions to maladjustment only when it was influenced by perceived maternal rejection. Conclusions were that apparent relations between parental punishment and children's psychological maladjustment were moderated by children's perceptions of maternal rejection.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between mothers involvement of their childrens peer interaction, their memory of childhood peer relations, and their perception of childrens social competence. Subject consisted of 302 mothers of 4- to 6-year-old children. A sample of mothers completed a series of questionnaires assessing their peer experiences, perceptions about their childrens sociability, and a behavioral checklist of their involvement activities. The results indicated that mothers own sociability and their perceptions of their childrens sociability influenced their involvement. More intense maternal involvement occurred when mothers perceived their children to be sociable. Mothers with sociable peer recollections appeared to take more active role in their childrens social development.
This study examined the current status of mothers' participation in the internet community and the relation of participation to maternal perceptions of social support and parenting efficacy. Participants were 386 mothers with young children. Half of them participated in internet communities, and the other half did not. Results showed that mothers' participation in internet communities is currently increasing in terms of quality and quantity of participation. The perceived level of social support and parenting efficacy were higher for participating mothers than for non-participating mothers. Among participating mothers, those with a higher level of participation had a higher level of perceived social support and of parenting efficacy than mothers with a lower level of participation.
Korean-American and American adolescents' attitudes toward the elderly(OP Scale) and their perception on the generational difference(GN GAP) were compared to find whether there is a difference according to the race. Adolescents' perceived generational gap was considered to be one of the most influential factor affecting their attitudinal differences. Adolescents regardless of face showed a somewhat positive attitudes toward the elderly and they perceived generational gap a little positively. Adolescents' age and sex were found not to be related with their attitude toward the elderly and generational gap. For the Korean-Americans birth-order was negatively related to the generational gap perception. the quality of relationship with grandparents was the crucial factor influencing adolescents' perceptions on generational gap and their attitudes toward the elderly indirectly. Grandparents' health and age affected on the quality of relationship. Additionally adolescents' favorite g andparent was found to be maternal grandmother and their relation style and conflict areas were different according to the race.
This study was performed to investigate body image perceptions of women about themselves and their preschool children and also to investigate the relationship between these perceptions. Subjects were 545 women and their children (279 boys and 268 girls) residing in Daejeon city. $67.7\%$ of women were classified as normal group, $18.6\%$ as overweight group, and $13.8\%$ as underweight group by BMI. $68.5\%\;and\;78.7\%$ of their boys and girls, respectively, were classified as normal group, $22.4\%\;and\;16.4\%$ as overweight group, $9.1\%\;and\;4.9\%$ as underweight group by WLI. Women made relatively accurate judgments on their current body sizes and selected their body images as the most desirable one. But they preferred plumper figures for their children and failed to perceive their overweight children as overweight. While $74.7\%$ of women wished to be thinner, $81.1\%$ of them wished their children to be fatter. Women spending less then 100 thousand won and more than 500 thousand won as monthly food expenses and having only one child perceived their children's current body sizes the lowest and the highest, respectively. Women wished boys to be fatter than girls. Their current body sizes were correlated positively with the children's current body size (p < .01), and their healthiest, attractive, and 'wish' figures were correlated positively with children's current, healthiest, attractive, and 'wish' figures (p < .05- p < .01). Body size dissatisfaction (wish to be thinner) and BMI of women were correlated negatively with children's healthiest and attractive figures (p < .01). These findings suggest that in order to correct the women's body image misperceptions and to prevent childhood obesity, mother's perception about healthy body images for themselves and their children need to be included in nutrition education. Also, it is necessary to assist mothers to understand the relationship of body size and weight status with the risk of chronic disease which might appear later in their children's life. Background: Indonesia is one of the countries with the highest preterm birth rate. Preterm infants are more likely than term and normal weight infants to experience neonatal mortality and morbidity due to acute respiratory, gastrointestinal, immunologic, central nervous system, hearing, and vision problems. Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a proven cost-effective intervention to help reduce mortality rates among preterm infants; however, it has not been fully implemented in hospitals. Purpose: Assess KMC knowledge and perceptions among health providers. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted from December 2015 to April 2016 and consisted of 21 in-depth interviews and 3 focus group discussions (FGDs). The 3 categories of health personnel in the study were clinical providers, hospital management representatives, and Indonesian Midwife Association members. Results: Most health providers know about the benefits of KMC including stabilizing temperatures, weight gain, and maternal-infant bonding and reducing human resources and labor costs. They were also aware of which newborns were eligible for KMC treatment. Their knowledge was mostly gained from observation or obtained from pediatricians and personal experience. They believed that a low birth weight infant in an incubator could not be treated with KMC and that it could only be practiced if a special gown was used when holding the baby. This perception could be caused by a lack of formal KMC training, leading to misunderstanding of its aspects. Conclusion: In conclusion, KMC knowledge of clinical providers in the 2 hospitals was sufficient, primarily due to their health-related educational background. Some perceptions could be potential barriers to or facilitate the implementation of KMC practice. These perceptions should be considered in future KMC training designs.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between mother's beliefs on child rearing and children's self-perceptions. The subject of this study were comprised of 167 children aged 8-10 in Iksan & Kunsan city from Dec. 2 to Dec. 8, 2000. The children's self-perceptions were assessed by the self perceptions profile for children. Mother's beliefs questionnaire, developed by Okagaki and Sternberg, was used to obtain the data on mother's beliefs of parenting. The methods of analyses included basic descriptive categorical analysis as well as t-test, one way ANOVA-test, and multiple regression analyses. The major findings from the analyses are as follows: First, a significant difference was found in the degree of mother's beliefs about child rearing by mother's religion(p<.01), mother's education(p<.05), income(p<.001), level of life (p<.0l), mother's job, mother and fathers' agreement of child rearing(p<.05), relationship between mother and child(p<.05) in independence but a significant difference was not found in the degree of mother's beliefs about child rearing in accommodation. Second, the levels of children's scholastic performance were related to higher levels of mother's education(p<.001), mother's income(p<.001), mother and fathers' agreement of child rearing(p<.01). The levels of children's social competence was related to higher, child's gender (p<.01); girls were higher than boys. The levels of children's athletic abilities were not significant. The levels of children's physical appearance was related to higher levels of mother's education(p<.01), mother's income(p<.01), level of life(p<.05), mother's marriage(not divorce)(p<.01). The levels of children's behavioral conduct were related to higher levels of child's gender (p<.05), mother's education(p<.01), mother's income (p<.01), relationship between father and child(p<.0l). The levels of children's global self worth were related to higher levels of mother's age(p<.05), mother's education(p<.001), level of life(p<.05). Third according to the multiple regression analyses for the relationships between mother's beliefs about child rearing and children's self perceptions, mother's beliefs on the creativity were related to higher levels of children's scholastic performance, social competence, and mother's beliefs on the problem solving skills to higher levels of children's behavioral conduct and mother's beliefs on the accommodation to lower levels of children's scholastic performance, social conduct.
The Purpose of this study was to examine how children's perceptuions of parental childrearing behaviors and family support were related to their interpersonal problem-solving behaviors. 580 subjects of the 5th 6th grades filled out questionnaires concerning the three research variables. The data were analyzed through correlation analyses and regression analyses. The results were as follows: The significant correlations were found between parental warmth·acceptance and children's interpersonal problem-solving behavior and between family support and problem-solving behaviors. Problem-solving behaviors showed higher correlations with maternal warmths·acceptance than paternal behaviors and with opposite-sex parents behaviors than with same-sex parents behaviors. Family support predicted children's social problem-solving behaviors better than parental warmth·acceptance especially among boys.
