Adaptive analysis of multilayered composite and sandwich plates is carried out. The adaptive analysis is based on a finite element error form, which measures the difference between the through-the-thickness distribution of finite element displacement and the actual displacement. The region where the error-measure exceeds the prescribed admitted error value, the finite element mesh locally refined in the thickness direction using the mesh superposition technique. Several numerical tests are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the current approach for adaptive analysis of laminated plates.
Since 1987, when statistical analyzing guide for thermal life test of Accelerated Life Test(ALT) was proposed as ANSI/IEEE Std 101, this guide has been used widely for many experiment data. Shim(2004) had done Monte Carlo simulation to compare life of two different systems or materials, based on statistic values obtained from ANSI/IEEE Std 101 data. In this study, a profile analysis is proposed for comparing life of two different systems or materials, and some examples using pre-existing data are given.
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a powerful tool for analyzing a broad range of materials and provides localized information about the microstructure. However, the analysis results are strongly influenced by the quality of the thin foil specimen. Sample preparation for TEM analysis requires considerable skill, especially when the area of interest is small or the material of interest is difficult to thin because of its high hardness and its mechanical instability when thinned. This article selectively reviews recent advances in TEM sample preparation techniques using a tripod polisher. In particular, it introduces two typical types (fl at type and wedge type) of TEM sample preparation and the benefits and drawbacks of each method; finally, a method of making better samples for TEM analysis is suggested.

This study deals with effect of plasma treatment on the properties of unidirectional ligno cellulosic fabric Hildegardia Populofolia (HDP) fabric. Thermal stability of the fabric was determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Thermo gravimetric analysis (DSC). Morphological properties was analyzed by SEM analysis and found that the surface was rough upon plasma treatment which provides good interfacial adhesion with matrix during composite fabrication. Thermal stability and mechanical properties of the plasma treated fabric slightly increases compare to alkali and untreated fabric. It was observed that tensile properties of the fabric increases upon plasma treatment due to the formation of rough surface. SEM analysis indicates formation of rough surface on plasma treatment which helps in increasing the interfacial interaction between the matrix (hydrophobic) and fabric (hydrophilic).
The effect of the process conditions of high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating on the porosity of the coating layer is investigated. HVOF coating layers are formed by depositing amorphous FeMoCrBC powder. Oxygen pressure varies from 126 to 146 psi and kerosene pressure from 110 to 130 psi. The Microstructural analysis confirms its porosity. Data analysis is performed using experimental data. The oxygen pressure-kerosene pressure ratio is found to be a key contributor to the porosity. An empirical model is proposed using linear regression analysis. The proposed model is then validated using additional test data. We confirm that the oxygen pressure-kerosene pressure ratio exponentially increases porosity. We present a porosity prediction model relationship for the oxygen pressure-kerosene pressure ratio.
PURPOSE. Translucency and colour stability are two most important aspects for an aesthetic dental restoration. Glass ceramic restorations are popular amongst clinicians because of their superior aesthetic properties. In the last decade, zirconia has generated tremendous interest due to its favorable mechanical and biological properties. However, zirconia lacks the translucency that lithium disilicate materials possess and therefore has limitations in its use, especially in esthetically demanding situations. There has been a great thrust in research towards developing translucent zirconia materials for dental restorations. The objective of the study was to evaluate and compare the transmittance of a translucent variant of zirconia to lithium disilicate. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two commercially available zirconia materials (conventional and high translucency) and 2 lithium disilicate materials (conventional and high translucency) with standardized dimensions were fabricated. Transmittance values were measured for all samples followed by a microstructural analysis using a finite element scanning electron microscope. One way analysis of variance combined with a Tukey-post hoc test was used to analyze the data obtained (P=.05). RESULTS. High translucency lithium disilicate showed highest transmittance of all materials studied, followed by conventional lithium disilicate, high translucency zirconia and conventional zirconia. The difference between all groups of materials was statistically significant. The transmittance of the different materials correlated to their microstructure analysis. CONCLUSION. Despite manufacturers' efforts to make zirconia significantly more translucent, the transmittance values of these materials still do not match conventional lithium disilicate. More research is required on zirconia towards making the material more translucent for its potential use as esthetic monolithic restoration.
Multi-level (macro-level, meso-level, and micro-level) mechanism of prefinitely strained concrete materials os studied The multi-level analysis explains the additional quasibrittle concrete material ductility that comes from lateral confinement and their multi-level interaction mechanisms. The so-called "upgraded tube-squash test" is used to achieve 50% axial strain and over 70 degree of deviatoric strain of quasibrittle concrete materials under extremely high pressure without producing visible cracks. In the micro-level analysis, the variations of hydration rte, micropores, and hydrate phased are analyzed. In the meso-level analysis, mesocracks (the initial invisible cracks) at the interfaces between aggregates and cement paste matrices are studied. The high confining effect in the specimen on the meso-level cracks is also studied. In the macro-level analysis, the physical behavior of prefinitely strained concrete materials is studied. The co-relationships of the results from the three distinct levels of analyses based in various prestraining (0%, 15%, 35%, and 50%) are studied. For the extremely deformed or strained concrete problems, multi-level analysis will be used to explain the unclear and unstudied mechanism of concrete materials, The multi-level analysis can provide us with valuable insights that can explain the additional ductility and confining effect in concrete. concrete.
In this study, the recently developed Al 2013 alloy was T8-tempered and, to improve the strength and corrosion-resistance, slight amounts of Zr of 0.2 wt% and 0.5 wt%, respectively, were added and the mechanical properties were analyzed. For microstructure and precipitate analysis, OM observation, XRD analysis, and TEM analysis were performed, and for the mechanical property analysis, hardness and tensile strength tests were done. Also, in order to determine the corrosion rate according to the Zr content, a potentiodynamic polarization test was performed and the properties were compared and analyzed. The size of the precipitate varied with the content of Zr and was finest at Zr content of 0.2 wt%; it grew larger at 0.5 wt%, at which point the hardness value accordingly showed the same trend. On the other hand, as calculated from the aspect of chemical bonding among atoms, it was confirmed that the tensile strength and the corrosion-resistance increased with the same trend.
Two-dimensional (2D) materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides have attracted tremendous scientific interests owing to their potential of solving the zero band-gap issue of graphene. In this work, the research areas and technology evolutionary dynamics of the 2D materials were identified using the scientometric method focusing on keyword mapping and clustering. The time-series analysis showed that the technological progress of 2D material is in the early growth period. The overlay mapping analysis were carried out to investigate the technology evolution of 2D materials with time. The strategic diagram of co-word analysis classifying the topological positions of keyword was derived to support the analysis results. It is conjectured that extensive research will be conducted widely on the application of 2D materials not only in electronic and optoelectronic devices, but also in various other fields such as biomedical applications, and that their development will be more rapid based on accumulated results of extant graphene research.
