A study on Bellovian love in Saul Bellow's More Die of Heartbreak (솔 벨로우의 "죽음보다 더한 실연"에 나타난 사랑의 의미)

  • This study aims to analyze what Saul Bellow wants to define "Love" in his recent work, More Die of Heartbreak. As a humanist, Saul Bellow is concerned about materialism in Post-modern age through his works. Today there are so many people that are hurt by the failure of love or experience heartbreak. We need to sense invisible danger all around us. We can find Bellovian love in More Die of Heartbreak. Bellow suggests that there should be "true love" between people, especially between men and women. But Kenneth Trachtenberg and Benn Crader have selfish and materialistic love. Kenneth had only a sensual desire for Treckie who is his daughter's mother. He cannot persuade Treckie to marry him. Benn, a middle-aged widower, peremptorily marries Matilda Layamon who is much younger than he. Unfortunately, the marriage brings him neither peace nor love. Benn recognizes his wrong conception of love through the death of Mrs. Bedell and Villitzer, and breaking off a marriage with Matilda. He decides to go to Antarctica. This is not an escape. This is his determination to save himself. At the North Pole he sets out to recover his gift of vision and redeem his fall from grace. He will desert his materialistic and absurd self. After the expedition, he will experience rebirth as an authentic human being who has acceptable eyes. Kenneth and Benn learn to conceive of love as one of man's strongest inner energies, for it is through love that you can penetrate to the essence of human being. In this study I try to define Bellovian love. In More Die of Heartbreak, love is a spiritual power that may even transfigure man.

Love and Economy in Cross-border Marriages in South Korea (사랑과 경제의 관계를 통해 본 이주결혼)

  • This study attempts to explore a phenomenon of an expansion of emotional capitalism in the context of marriage migration. Emphasizing that 'emotion,' 'love,' 'affection,' 'intimacy,' and 'care' are neither materialistic nor a work, and noting that they are social roles attached to natural femininity and that they are separated from the economic realm, modern myth has been challenged by the increase of marriage industry, emotional/service work, and care industry. This study discusses the ways in which individual desires for love and intimacy and her/his economical needs are combined or negotiated. Specifically, this study 1) reviews existing literature on how 'love' and 'intimacy' has been combined with economy under capitalism in general, 2) discusses the ways in which a marriage has been commercially negotiated within the context of South Korea, 3) analyzes combined aspects of 'love' and 'economy' within cross-border marriages and suggests that cross-border marriages, even though they are highly commercially negotiated, may not be fully explained by 'economy' only as other marriages have both aspects of 'love' and 'economy.' An analysis on 'love' and 'economy,' not only separated from each other but also controversial, is essential for understanding 'intimacy' and transitions of Korean families in post-modern era. However, the evaluation criteria for commercial trades in 'love' and 'intimacy' have not developed yet. Whereas a certain trade is inevitable or essential, others may threaten our lives. Developing the ethical and political evaluation criteria on such commercial trades requires future study.

  • The purpose of this study was to research and design stage costumes of Whangjinie focusing on inner image of Whangjinie, present stage costumes of new image. Four steps were taken in order to achieve this purpose. The first step was to investigate the old documents and prior research about literature world of Whangjinie. The second step was to analyze stage costumes of Whangjinie which were worn in opera, movie. The third step was to design and make the stage costumes according to new images Whangjinie which were extracted from above two research results. The new images of Whangjinie are as follows 1. Whangjinie as a kisaeng(professional entertainer) She thirsted for new, materialistic love though she failed in love everytime. 2. Whangjinie as a woman. She had a hard time by feeling an irresistible yearning for lover 3. Whangjinie as a poet. She expressed as a poetry her vanity and loneliness of life. Using above three images, this study designed four new stage costumes of Whangjinie and two designs of them were made really. But this study didn't present historic costume of her age but expressed modern mood in color and form.

A study on the Pecuniary mediated Sexual Discussion in Saseol Sijo (금전(金錢)을 매개(媒介)로 한 사설시조(辭說時調)의 성담론(性談論))

  • Saseol Sijo which reflects on people's life often showns us relationships between love and economy of those periods' people in Chosun dynasty. Meaning of a word 'housewife' is a woman who supporting and organizing family with her husband. Materialistic problems and economic problems appeared in Saseol Sijo emphasize entertaining and merrymaking rather than struggling to the society enforcing poverty. Therefore, it is often said that Saseol Sijo stimulates overconsumption of goods and money. We can regard sexual discussions appeared in those periods' Saseol Sijo as reflections of desire which are the way of releasing repressed sexual appetite of women or substitutions of satisfying their sexual appetite. Features of housewives appeared in Poong-ryu-bang and Saseol Sijo which are succeeded as productions of merrymaking in Latter half period of Chosun dynasty, can spotlight because of its meanings. It told us not only housewives' roles are started to change but also vivid sexual discussions similar to nowadays things are begun in latter half Period of Chosun dynasty. Main subject pecuniary mediated sexual discussion of housewives appeared in Saseol Sijo teaches a lot of things to twenty first century's contemporary people experiencing collapsed family relationship, pariakapitalismus and wide spread sexual industries.
