A rock mass containing non-persistent joints can only fail if the joints propagate and coalesce through an intact rock bridge. Shear strength of rock mass containing non-persistent joints is highly affected by the both, mechanical behavior and geometrical configuration of non-persistent joints located in a rock mass. Existence of rock joints and rock bridges are the most important factors complicating mechanical responses of a rock mass to stress loading. The joint-bridge interaction and bridge failure dominates mechanical behavior of jointed rock masses and the stability of rock excavations. The purpose of this review paper is to present techniques, progresses and the likely future development directions in experimental and numerical modelling of a non-persistent joint failure behaviour. Such investigation is essential to study the fundamental failures occurring in a rock bridge, for assessing anticipated and actual performances of the structures built on or in rock masses. This paper is divided into two sections. In the first part, experimental investigations have been represented followed by a summarized numerical modelling. Experimental results showed failure mechanism of a rock bridge under different loading conditions. Also effects of the number of non-persistent joints, angle between joint and a rock bridge, lengths of the rock bridge and the joint were investigated on the rock bridge failure behaviour. Numerical simulation results are used to validate experimental outputs.
An intermeshing corotating twin screw extruder is mainly used for compounding polymeric materials. Twin screw extruder can adopt modular-type screw configurations, which directly controls the quality and productivity of the products. The types, shapes, and specifications of the screw and kneading elements are summarized, and the effects of screw configuration on the processabiliy of the materials are discussed. The principles of screw configuration universally applied to mass production of general-purpose resins are explained, and the guidelines of screw combination according to the roles of feeding, melt mixing, and metering zones are listed. The strategies of screw combination suitable for various cases, such as side feeding of liquid additives or inorganic fillers, reactive extrusion, devolatilization process, production of products requiring bright color and transparency, and processing of materials with low apparent specific gravity, are presented.
In electronic catalogs, each item is represented as an independent unit while the parts of the item can be composed of a higher level of functionality. Thus, the search for this kind of product database is limited to the retrieval of most similar standard commodities. However, many industrial products need to configure optional parts to fulfill the required specifications. Since there are many paths in finding the required specifications, we need to develop a search system via the configuration process. In this system, we adopt a two-phased approach. The first phase finds the most similar template, and the second phase adjusts the template specifications toward the required set of specifications by the Constraint and Rule Satisfaction Problem approach. There is no guarantee that the most similar template can find the most desirable configuration. The search system needs backtracking capability, so the search can stop at a satisfied local optimal satisfaction. This framework is applied to the configuration of computers and peripherals. Template-based reasoning is basically the same as case-based reasoning. The required set of specifications is represented by a list of criteria, and matched with the product specifications to find the closest ones. To measure the distance, we develop a thesaurus of values, which can identify the meaning of numbers, symbols, and words. With this configuration, the performance of the search by configuration algorithm is evaluated in terms of feasibility and admissibility.

In order to investigate dynamic behaviors of marine cables under wave and earthquake forces a geometric nonlinear. F, E formulation of marine cables is presented and tangent stiffness and mass matrices for the isoparametric cable element are derived, The initial equilibrium state of cables subjected to self -weights and current forces is determined and free vibration and dynamic nonlinear analysis of cable structures under additional environmental loads are performed based on the initial configuration Challenging examples are presented and discussed in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the present finite element method and investigate dynamic nonlinear behaviors of marine cables.
Based on the boundary element method, the motion responses and transmission coefficients of a moored floating breakwater were investigated in oblique waves. To satisfy the outgoing radiation condition in the far field, the fluid domain was divided into inner and outer regions. The complete solution could be obtained by applying the matching conditions between the eigenfunction-based outer solution and BEM-based inner solution. Using the developed predictive tools, the wave exciting forces, added mass, damping coefficients, motion responses, and transmission coefficients were assessed for various combinations of breakwater configuration, wave heading, mooring cables properties, and wave characteristics. It was found that the transmission coefficient for a moored floating breakwater was closely dependent on the motion responses, which were greatly amplified at the resonant frequencies.
In this paper, heat and mass transfer characteristics through experimental and numerical study are extensively investigated in steam reform ins reactor under given operating conditions. In order to get simulated data at outlet of the reformer, heterogeneous reactor model is incorporated. As the reaction also takes place in porous media, two medium approach is used to take into account thermally non-equilibrium phenomena between catalyst and bulk gas. In steam reforming reaction, heat transfer issue is so significant that geometrical configuration study is also conducted.
A review has been made for the previous studies on safety of a geologic repository for high-level radioactive wastes (HLW) related to autocatalytic criticality phenomena with positive reactivity feedback. Neutronic studies on geometric and materials configuration consisting of rock, water and thermally fissile materials and the radionuclide migration and accumulation studies were performed previously for the Yucca Mountain Repository and a hypothetical water-saturated repository for vitrified HLW. In either case, it was concluded that it would be highly unlikely for an autocatalytic criticality event to happen at a geologic repository. Remaining scenarios can be avoided by careful selection of a repository site, engineered-barrier design and conditioning of solidified HLW. Thus, criticality safety should be properly addressed in regulations and site selection criteria. The models developed for radiological safety assessment to obtain conservatively overestimated exposure dose rates to the public may not be used directly for the criticality safety assessment, where accumulated fissile materials mass needs to be conservatively overestimated. The models for criticality safety also require more careful treatment of geometry and heterogeneity in transport paths because a minimum critical mass is sensitive to geometry of fissile materials accumulation.
In advanced nuclear reactors, the passive containment cooling has been suggested to enhance the safety. The passive cooling has two mechanisms, air natural convection and oater cooling with evaporation. To confirm the coolability of PCCS, many works have been performed experimentally and numerically. In this study, the water cooling test was performed to obtain the evaporative heat transfer coefficients in a scaled don segment type PCCS facility which have same configuration with AP600 prototype containment. Air-steam mixture temperature and velocity, relative humidity and well heat flux are measured. The local steam mass flow rates through the vertical plate part of the facility are calculated from the measured data to obtain evaporative heat transfer coefficients. The measured evaporative heat transfer coefficients are compared with an analytical model which use a mass transfer coefficients. From the comparison, the predicted coefficients show good agreement with experimental data however, some discrepancies exist when the effect of wave motion is not considered. Finally, a new correlation on evaporative heat transfer coefficients are developed using the experimental values.
A simplified heat transfer model for the cooling capability of the AP 600 PCCS is proposed I this paper. As the PCCS domain is covered with very thin and long water film, it is phenomenologically divided into 3 regions; water entrance effect region, asymptotic region, and air entrance effect region. As the length of the asymptotic region is estimated to be over 90% of the whole domain, the phenomena in the asymptotic region is focused. Using the analogy between heat and mass transfer phenomena in a turbulent situation, a new dependent variable combining temperature and vapor mass fraction was defined. The similarity between the PCCs phenomena in the asymptotic region and the buoyant air flow phenomena on a vertical heated plate is derived. Using the similarity, the simplified heat transfer correlations for the interfacial heat fluxes and the ratios of latent heat transfer to sensible heat transfer were established. To verify the accuracy of the correlation, the results of this study were compared with those of other numerical analyses performed for the same configuration and they are well within the range of 15% difference.

A level set method is combined with the volume-of-fluid method so that the coupled method can not only calculate an interfacial curvature accurately but also can achieve mass conservation well. The coupled level set and volume-of-fluid(CLSVOF) method is efficiently implemented by employing an interface reconstruction algorithm which is based on the explicit relationship between the interface configuration and the fluid volume function. The CLSVOF method is applied for numerical simulation of droplet impact on solid surfaces with variable contact angles. The numerical results are found to preserve mass conservation and to be in good agreement with the data reported in the literature. Also, the present method proved to be applicable to the complex phenomena such as breakup and rebound of a droplet.
