This study attempted to examine whether there is a relationship between parental stress and the accessible and mobilizable social capital of mothers raising young children by the mothers' employment status. The sample included 284 employed and 287 non-employed mothers who have children younger than the age of 5. Three research questions were as follows: 1) do the accessible and mobilizable social capital of mothers and parental stress differ by the mothers' employment status? 2) are the accessible and mobilizable social capital of employed mothers related to the level of parental stress? And finally, 3) are the accessible and mobilizable social capital of unemployed mothers related to the level of parental stress? The results showed that no significant difference was found in accessing social capital by the employment status of mothers. However, employed mothers were capable of mobilizing more social capital for childcare assistance than non-employed mothers. The parental stress of employed mothers was significantly lower than that of non-employed mothers. For employed mothers, their mobilizable social capital contributed to the reduction of parental stress. For non-employed mothers, their capability of accessing social capital significantly predicted lower levels of parental stress. These results indicate that the concept of social capital could be taken into consideration when explaining the parental stress of married mothers raising young children.
Objectives: The objective of the present study was to assess the factors that influence the health of workers, especially nurses, and to propose methods for health management. Methods: A total of 246 nurses were surveyed to ascertain the health status score, Sasang constitution diagnosis, health-related life and job factors, psychosocial stress, and job stress. Depending on their health status score, the subjects were categorized into unhealthy, intermediate, or healthy groups, and each factor was compared with the stress score of the groups. Further, each Sasang constitution factor was also compared with the stress scores. Results: Analysis based on the health status scores indicated that the patients in the intermediate group were older and had longer tenure than those in the unhealthy or healthy groups. The healthy group had higher number of married individuals, and they were subjectively assessed as healthy. Patients in this group were more satisfied with their work than those in the unhealthy group. Analysis of the Sasang constitution showed that a lower percentage of individuals with a Soeumin constitution were married, and most considered themselves to be unhealthy during the subjective health assessment. Conclusions: The findings of this survey revealed that in order to maintain health, efforts should be made to improve the work environment, achieve health confidence, and practice health behavior while considering one's own body, mental state, and constitution.

Recently family policy and social policy have focused on the balance between the work and family of working parents. The purpose of this study is to analyze the status of the work-life balance of married working women. For this purpose the eight married working women who care for 1 or more pre-school child(ren) were interviewed. The questionnaire used was consisted of 4 themes : 1) child care, 2) working situation, 3) the work-life balance and 4) the need to improve related policies. Through the interviews and data analysis we found the following : 1) Accessibility to educarecenter was considered the most important factor for working moms when they choose an educarecenter. In order to improve accessibility of educarecenters we have to install more educarecenters with various level. 2) All respondents look maternity leave and they evaluated that other services were very weak in terms of quality, usefulness and accessibility. 3) Many childcare services aid in creating work and family balance, however they are not effective. Therefore future policies should focus on providing more options for working women for appropriate services according to childcare needs, working conditions and preferences.
Objective : The objective of this study was to examine the mental health status and its correlates of the marriage-migrant women in Seoul, Korea. Methods : One hundred and seventy marriage-migrant women and one hundred and sixteen married Korean women were recruited from community to complete Symptom Check List-90-Revision (SCL-90-R). Marriage-migrant women were also asked for their socio-demographic factors, acculturative stress, family-relationship stress, and social support. The scores on the SCL-90-R were compared between marriage-migrant women and married Korean women, and the correlates of marriage-migrant women's mental health were investigated. Results : Compared to married Korean women, marriage-migrant women showed lower levels of mental health problems including somatization, obsession-compulsion, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism. Longer length of residence in Korea, lower family income, social support, higher acculturation stress, and family relationship stress were all associated with mental health problems of marriage-migrant women Results : Our results suggest that mental health of marriage-migrant women is not necessarily bad, and several factors may affect their mental health. However, further studies are required in a larger representative sample to confirm the study findings.
Researchers have largely overlooked the direct effects of household responsibil-ities on earnings in stead focusing attention the effect of woman's employment on the division of household labor or on family life. Given that a substantial proportion of married women already work outside the home and their numbers are likely to be increae to some extent those concerned with the well-being of employed-married women and of their households may focus their attention on how best to provide good policy to manage woman's dual roles. The purposes of the study are as follows; 1) To find out factors which affect women's housework time. 2) To examine the relationship between housework and market work. Data are obtained from 259 households with employed-married women living in Seoul. The results of this study are as follows: 1) women's wages are reduced by time spent on housework. Women's housework time is insignificantly related to women's wages. 2) women's occupation statues is signific ntly positively related to their wages. 3)women's age and other family income are generally negatively related to their housework time,. The results of this study indicate that housework has a direct effect on wages by reducing the amount of energy and efforts available for market work lowering economic status of women.

This study was conducted to identify factors which predict and discriminate women' reemployment. 288 married women whose careers had been interrupted for more than 1 year and 287 married women who re-entered into the labor market within 5 years were surveyed. Collected data were analyzed by logistic regression analysis. In the personal factor(reemployment need), proximal context factors(career barriers, family support and expectation for reemployment) and background context factors(SES, family life cycle), background context factors were revealed not to predict significantly women's reemployment. Secondly, in the case of proximal context factors, it was found that 'expectation of family members for reemployment' and 'sharing family care' had strong effects on reemployment. And compared with interrupted women, reemployed women were less likely to perceive career barriers. Specifically, they showed lower expectation to their job and status which they would achieve, less perceived gender/age discrimination in labor market, and had more confidence that they could find a job. Finally, with regard to the personal factor (reemployment need), the lower women had self-actualization need, the higher economic need, and the higher social need, it was highly likely to classify into reemployed women. We discussed the way to improve reemployment of career interrupted women based on above mentioned findings.
This study examined the possible causes of nutritional inadequacy in Vietnamese immigrant women married to Korean husbands. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with a sample of 34 Vietnamese marriage immigrant women and 17 Korean spouses participating in or having experienced Nutrition Plus from four Community Health Centers in Seoul, Korea. The study results showed that the nutritional staus of the Vietnamese marriage immigrant women was affected by the unfamiliar Korean food (cultural factor), low household income (economical factor), difficulty in purchasing Vietnamese food (environmental factor), and low accessibility to nutrition support systems (social factor). The Korean husbands' nutritional status was affected by the unfamiliar Vietnamese food (cultural factor), low household income (economic factor), and irregular working conditions (social factors). Nutritional interventions as a public service to the community needs to be developed and applied. Suggestions are presented regarding the future efforts to better understand and meet the nutrition needs of intermarried couples to respond to their heterogeneous needs and deliver adequate nutrition service to ever increasing intermarried families.
Purpose: The study examined the correlation of perceived health status, health behaviors, and marital satisfaction in women who have immigrated to Korea through marriage. Method: Data were collected via questionnaires that investigated health status, health behaviors, Korean language ability, characteristics of couple, and marital satisfaction. Three hundred four subjects were selected for a 4-month period. The data of 300 subjects were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and correlation, after four questionnaires were excluded due to incomplete data. Results: Perceived health status varied significantly according to nationality, existence of religion, and period of immigration. The scores for perceived health status among women who had lived in Korea for more than 5 years were lower than for women who had resided for 1-3 years. There was a significant positive correlation between health status and health behavior, and health status and Korean language ability, but a negative correlation between health status and age. Conclusion: A program for the improvement of health in immigrant women should include communication assistance as their mother language and should provide periodic health screening.
