Previous studies indicated that unmarried persons are subject to higher mortality than the married, and that the differentials are more marked for male than for females. There are two major approaches to explaining the marital status differentials in mortality ; selection function and protection function of marriage. Following protection fucntion, this study develops the new "instrumental / expressive sex-role" hypothesis in order to explain why marriage protects males more against death. The hypothesis expects that male's instrumental role and female's expressive role have direct effect as well as indirect effect through social integration on sex differential mortality by marital status. for the hypothesis testing, Korea and US vital statistics and census data are used to compute age-specific , age-adjusted mortality rates and their ratios for persons in different marital status. Major findings are as follows. 1)For both Korea and US being married is more advantageous to males than females, ad being widowed, divorced, and separated is more disadvantageous to males, while being never-married is more disadvantageous to females, 2) For Korea, the never married men and women have the highest mortality rates, 3) For US the never married women have the highest mortality rate, while the divorced, separated, and widowed men have the highest mortality rate. Fro both Korea and US data, selection function is rejected, but instrumental/expressive sex-role hypothesis succeeds in accounting for the sex and marital status differential in mortality.

This study analyzes the impacts of household work participation and shared activities between couples on marital relationship and depression among retired men and women with retired husbands. To investigate this, a survey of 367 married people is conducted on retired men and women with retired husbands. The influencing factors on the marital relationship of retired men are found to be couples' shared activities, gender role attitudes, and subjective health status. The marital relationship of women with retired husbands is influenced by shared activities by couples, the division of domestic labor, and gender role attitudes. The factors affecting retired men's depression are shared activities by couples, perceived health status, type of jobs before retirement, and age. Women's depression is related to household income, shared activities by couples, husbands' jobs before retirement, subjective health status, and division of household labor.
Objectives : This study investigated poor self-rated health and its associated factors in married Korean women, focusing on the burdens related to family affairs and social support. Methods : Cross-sectional data from 3,039 married women (between 25 and 64 years old) who completed Korean Longitudinal surveys of Women and Families were analyzed. Results : Among working women, only two factors-lack of husband's involvement in housework and insufficient communication with husband - influenced poor self-rated health. Among housewives, lack of husband's involvement in housework, insufficient communication with husband, low satisfaction of marriage, and avoidance of alcohol consumption were associated with poor self-rated health. Conclusions : Regardless of whether women are employed or housewives, husband's support is a very important factor affecting women's health. Social efforts for changing perceptions and values are needed so that men and women mutually support each other in family affairs.
In this paper we try to explain delays in one's first marriage that are observed in contemporary society by accounting for possible factors that may play a substantial role in delaying marriages. Discrete-time survival analysis with unobserved heterogeneity was employed. The result indicates that the odds of getting married compared to odds of not getting married are 0.91 times, i.e. 8.5% lower for women with bachelor's degree than women with high school diploma or below. The odds of getting married compared to odds of not getting married are 0.4 times, i.e. 59.6% lower in case of women with masters and/or doctorate program degree than women with bachelor's degree. Employed men's odds of getting married to not getting married are increased by a factor of 1.65 compared to the unemployed men. In addition, if one's family circumstances are economically below average at the age of 14, the odds decrease by a multiple of 0.65. With these results, we are able to conclude that not only education level but also one's economic ability play significant roles in determining one's marriage decision.
As a result of the sudden change of our society and the increasing employment of married women, it is necessary for men to participate in household works. The purpose of this study was to investigate consciousness of and participation in meal management of 30 to 50 years old Korean married men, living in Incheon and Ganghwa. The younger and the lower the education, consciousness about the meal management was lower. More than half of the subjects responded ‘Men can do participate in preparation of meals if necessary’ and the lowest of the subjects responded ‘Men should not participate in preparation of meals’. It showed that the consciousness of participation in meal management was changing positively. Although the consciousness of participation in meal management was positive, the real rate of meal management participation was not that high. Men were participated in grocery shopping, dish washing, cooking and menu planning in order. The average score of nutrition knowledge was high but there was no significant correlation between the nutrition knowledge and the participation in meal management. There were no correlations between the consciousness of and the participation in meal management. But there were strong correlations among each other in meal management behaviors such as grocery shopping, dish washing, cooking and menu planning. Our results suggested that nutritional education should be carried out in menu planning and cooking demanding knowledge and training.

This study examined the effect of intergenerational support provided by husbands and wives to their parents and vice versa on marital satisfaction of grown-up children. The study consisted of 229 married men and 319 married women in Korea and 220 married men and 249 married women in Japan. EASS2006 data were used in the analysis. Among Korean males, scores for marital satisfaction were highest among those who frequently offered financial support to their own parents and their spouse's parents. Among Korean females, scores for marital satisfaction were highest among those who offered daily support to their own parents. Among males and females, scores for marital satisfaction were highest among those who frequently received financial support from the husband's parents. In the case of Japanese males, scores for marital satisfaction were highest among those who no provided daily support to their own parents and to their spouse's parents.
This study was conducted to investigate the anthropometric data, serum profiles, nutrient intakes and diet quality of men in their 30s. The subjects were divided into a married group and an unmarried group. For the study, we obtained data for analysis from the combined 2008~2015 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Mean height and weight of study population were 173.5 cm, and 74.0 kg in the married group and 173.1 cm, and 73.6 kg in the unmarried group, respectively. Systolic blood pressure in the unmarried group was significantly higher than that of the married group (P<0.001), while circulating vitamin D levels in the married group were significantly higher than those of the unmarried group (P<0.001). The proportion of obesity in the two groups was 42.41% and 38.40%, respectively. In the unmarried group, prevalence of depression was significantly higher than that those of the married group. Intakes of energy, water, protein, fat, carbohydrate and calcium in the married group were significantly higher than those of the unmarried group. In both groups, water and fiber intakes were low and sodium intakes were extremely high based on the KDRIs (Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans). The mean adequacy ratio (MAR) of the married group was higher than that of the unmarried group. The index of nutritional quality (INQ) in the married group was also higher than that of the unmarried group. Therefore, we propose development of dietary guidelines and education programs for improvement of food and nutrient intakes, nutrition balance and dietary quality of unmarried men in their 30s.
This paper investigated labor force participation pattern changes of married women from 1980 to 2005. Using the micro samples of Population and Housing Census provided by the Korean National Statistical Office, the following results were obtained. The labor force participation rate of married women has substantially increased from 1980 to 2005, with some significant changes in labor supply pattern worthy of note. The most important finding concerns the highly educated women's and younger cohorts' labor supply patterns. Labor force participation rate rapidly increased among college educated married women and wives of college educated men. This is different from the stylized fact associated with married women's labor in Korea, that is, "More educated, less work." This change is more obvious among recent cohorts born from 1971-1975 and from 1976-1980. In contrast to the spouses who trigger less of an influence on married women's labor, the presence of children still proved to be a critical component.

In this work, we investigated the perceptions of marriage among married people through in-depth interviews with twenty-two married men and women. The results of our analysis on the in-depth interviews are as follows. 1. Married men and women are well aware of the fact that. in a marriage life, one must sacrifice something in order to get anything. That is, even though they have yearning for their lost days of single life and they miss those days, on the other hand, they think that, through marriage, they feel more stable with a sense of belonging to the family. and they are no longer feeling lonely. 2. Married people consider that marriage is something you really have to experience yourself before one knows what it is like to be married. That is, they consider that, while, being single is just like tasting only a little bit of the flavor of life, marriage is like tasting the true meaning of life. The true meanings of life that married people are trying to find are "the strength they get from their family and children", "the journey of finding one's true self through overcoming hardships of life", "the joy and comfort of living together as a family", and finally "the broader life experience and higher quality of life".

This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study that analyzed the effect of quality of life on marriage views in college students. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between quality of life and marriage view. The study targets were 195 male and female university students aged between 20 and 25. The data collection was done only by those who voluntarily agreed to the study using online questionnaires, and the data collection period was from October 1 to October 30, 2020. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 18.0 for frequency analysis, χ2 analysis, Pearson correction, t-test, and simple regression analysis. The result of the study that men had higher conservative marriage view (M=3.22, SD=.716) than women (M=2.21, SD=.903, p<0.01), women had higher active marriages (M=3.94, SD=.955) than men (M=3.41, SD=.933, p<0.01), and women had higher exclusive marriage views (M=3.94, SD=.955) than men (M=3.41, SD=.933, p<0.01). And people with high quality of life positively influenced romantic marriage view (R2=.029, p<0.05), but negatively affected passive marriage view (R2=.029, p<0.05) and conservative marriage view (R2=.034, p<0.05). Based on the results of this study, a program is needed to create a positive marriage view for the married age group, create an environment for married people to positively engage in social and economic activities, and propose a program for creating healthy family relationships.
