A sweet corn hybrid, Golden Cross Bantam 70, was grown at 5 plant populations (5,000, 6,000, 7,000, 8,000, and 9,000 plants/10a) under the transparent P .E. film mulch to find the best yield evaluation method. Plant population did not affect early plant growth, culm length, ear height, and silking date. However, number of tillers at harvest decreased but leaf area index increased with increased plant population. Marketable ears were divided into two classes; the first grade of which husked ear weight over l50g (unhusked ear weight 230g) and the second grade of which husked ear weight between 100 and 150g (unhusked ear weight between 180 and 230g) according to the whole sale market price. Average length, thickness, and weight of marketable ears over 100g of husked ears decreased with increased plant population. The proportion of ears over 150g decreased with increased plant population. However, total number and weight of marketable ears and gross income per 10a calculated considering weight and number of ears increased with plant population. There were highly positive correlations between gross income and ear number or ear weight per unit area. At high plant populations the number of marketable ears was overestimated but ear weight underestimated compared with gross income. Dry matter yield of stover increased with increased plant population and ranged 755-944kg/10a with 20.7-24.5% dry matter content. Rice black-streaked dwarf virus infection rate was 10.6-14.9%, but it was not related to plant population.
To find out the planting times for the economic yield of a super sweet corn hybrid, "Cambella 90" was planted from 1 April of 2003 and 2004 at the 10 days intervals under black polyethylene (P. E.) film mulch and in bare soil in Gyeongsan. Daily maximum soil temperature under black P. E. film mulch was lower, while daily minimum soil temperature was higher compared to bare soil. Soil moisture content under black P. E. film mulch maintained optimum level longer than in bare soil. Emergence rate, percent stand, culm length, and the number of marketable ears were higher under black P E. film mulch compared to bare soil. Silking date under black P. E. film mulch was earlier compared to bare soil by $4{\sim}6$ days at April plantings, while only 1 day earlier at June plantings. Silking date of individual plants in a plot ranged $3{\sim}5$ days depending on planting dates and soil mulch in the same plot. The number of large ears decreased as planting dates delayed. Considering emergence rate and the number of marketable ears, the planting time for the economic yield of a super sweet com hybrid, "Cambella 90" ranged 1 April to 20 June in the southern part of Korea.
The performance of 7 sugary (su) and 12 shrunken-2 (sh2) sweet com hybrids which are commercially grown in the United States was tested in Korea. The 100-seed weight of su hybrids (16.5-23.6 g) was much heavier compared to that of sh2 hybrids (10.9-17.5 g). The germination rate of su and sh2 hybrids at $25^{\circ}C$ ranged 93.3-100% and 86.7-98.9%, the emergence rate of su and sh2 hybrids in cold test ranged 78.9-97.8% and 62.2-97.8%, and field emergence rate of su and sh2 hybrids ranged 74.4-100.0% and 79.9-98.2%, respectively. In su hybrids, there was a significantly positive correlation between germination rate at $25^{\circ}C$ and emergence rate in cold test or early growth. In contrast, in sh2 hybrids seed weight was positively correlated with early plant growth, while not with the germination rate at $25^{\circ}C$ or emergence rate in cold test and field. Most sh2 hybrids produced larger and more marketable ears compared to su hybrids although there were significant differences among the hybrids in the same genotype. At harvest (24 days after pollination) soluble solids content of su hybrids (24.3-27.1 Brix %) was much higher than that of sh2 hybrids (13.8-18.0 Brix %), while total sugars of sh2 hybrids (21.4-28.6% on the dry weight basis) was much higher compared to su hybrids (2.4-15.9%). Considering germination and emergence rates, marketable ear production, and total sugar content, 'GCB 70' and 'Sweet Satin' in su hybrids and 'Ice Queen', 'Aspen', 'Sweet Magic', 'Bandit', 'Xtrasweet 82', 'Aspen', and 'Cambella 90' in sh2 hybrids performed better than other hybrids.
A sweet corn hybrid, Golden Cross Bantam 70, was grown at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20kg/10a of nitrogen (N) under the transparent P. E. film mulch to find the best yield evaluation method. Culm length, ear height, number of tillers increased and silking date was earlier by 1-2 days with increased N level. Leaf area index of main culm at harvest increased with increased N level. Marketable ears were divided into two classes according to the whole sale market price; the frist grade of which husked ear weight over 150g (unhusked ear weight 230g) and the second grade of which husked ear weight between 100 and 150g (unhusked ear weight between 180 and 230g). Average length, thickness, and weight of both grades of marketable ears were not different among the N levels. The proportion of the first grade increased with increased N level. However, total number and weight of marketable ears and gross income per 10a calculated considering weight and number of ears increased with increased N level. There were highly positive correlations between gross income and ear number or ear weight per l0a. The number and weight of marketable ears were underestimated at high N levels compared with gross income. Dry matter yield of stover ranged 740-963kg/10a and increased with increased N level with 20. 8-24.5% dry matter content. Rice black-streaked dwarf virus infection rate was 11.8-15.0%, but it was not related to N level. N concentration in ear was similar but that in stover increased with increased N level. Total N uptake increased but N recovery decreased with increased N level.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of slow-releasing fertilizer and sowing date on waxy corn propagated through double cropping without tillage. "Mibaek 2" was sown for first cropping on March 25th, April 5th, and April 15th, and for second cropping on July 5th, July 15th, and July 25th in 2018-2019. In order to save labor, slow-releasing fertilizer was utilized only one time before sowing. The accumulated temperature from sowing to silking was about 590-700℃. It took 65-77 days when "Mibaek 2" was sown in early April, but the one sown in early July took 42-52 days. In the first cropping, the culm length and ear length caused by the sowing date had no statistical significance, but the kernel set length was the highest at 123 cm in the sowing district on April 5th. The weight of marketable ears was the highest at 100%, in addition to soil testing-based recommended fertilization. Meanwhile, in the second cropping, culm length, ear length, and yield were less compared to the first cropping. The culm length, kernel set length, ear length, and seed set length decreased as sowing date was delayed. The number and yield of marketable ears were the highest at 100%, in addition to soil testing-based recommended fertilization like in the first cropping. It has been found that securing yield by July 15th to finish the second seeding of the crop in the central part of Korea is advantageous. These results of this study will be helpful to farmers for the double cropping of waxy corn cultivation and management.
In 1986, at Cheju and Seoguipo, a sweet com hybrid, Golden Cross Bantam 70, was grown at 5 phosphate rates (0, 8, 16, 24 and 32 kg/l0a) to determine effects of phosphate rate on growth and yield of sweet com and to recommend the optimum phosphate rate for sweet com production in volcanic ash soils of Cheju province. Days to silking were shortened 1 to 2 days by phosphate application of more than l6kg/10a. Culm length, ear height and fresh stover yield/l0a did not differ between two locations, but linearly increased as phosphate rate was increased from 0 to 32kg/10a. Average length and weight of marketable ears were greater at Cheju than at Seoguipo and linearly increased as phosphate rate increased. The number of marketable ears per plant and per l0a did not differ between two locations, but quadratically increased as phosphate rate increased. The economic optimum phosphate rate estimated on the basis of the quadratic model, ranged 25.6 to 27.4kg/10a at various fertilizer-to-ear price ratios.
A super sweet corn hybrid, "Cambella 90", was grown at 5 plant populations (35,000, 45,000, 55,000, 65,000, 75,000 plants/ha) on 1 April, 1 May, and 1 June in 2004 under black polyethylene (P. E.) film mulch to find out the optimum plant populations at different planting dates. Emergence rate and percent stand increased as planting dates delayed. Culm length and ear height were highest at the planting on 1 May and increased with increased plant population. Soluble solids content was highest at the planting on 1 May and decreased as plant population increased. Ear length, seed set ear length, ear diameter, and ear weight decreased as plant population increased. Seed set ear length could not substitute for ear weight to evaluate marketable ears. The optimum plant population of "Cambella 90" was $65,000{\sim}75,000$ plants/ha at the planting on 1 April when emergence rate was low due to low temperature, $55,000{\sim}65,000$ plants/ha at the planting on 1 May, and 65,000 plants/ ha after the planting on 1 June.
Fresh edible sweet corns demand relatively short period to harvest fresh ears, which can allow farmers to make a choice sweet corns for various cropping systems. For this reason, we were to find the optimum planting date of late-planted sweet corns to sell fresh ears in the autumn linked to cropping system with winter crops, investigating yield and properties of marketable fresh ears and growth traits of sweet corns (cv. 'Godangok' and cv. 'Guseulok') depending on planting dates such as 10 July, 20 July, and 30 July in Suwon 2012 and 2013, respectively. The 20 July-planted sweet corns showed the most fresh ear yield. However, the 10 July-planted and the 30 July-planted had 32% less yield caused by consecutive rainfall from 10 July through 20 July, and 15% less yield due to low air temperature during ripening than the 20 July-planted, respectively. The 10 and 20 July-planted sweet corns had average 140g of a fresh ear weight and 15% heavier ear than the 30 July-planted. For the July-planted sweet corns, silking days after planting ($r=-0.80^{**}$), and harvesting days after silking ($r=-0.97^{**}$) and planting ($r=-0.91^{**}$) were highly negatively correlated with daily mean air temperature during the period, resulting in it takes 1,100 growing degree days (GDD) to harvest fresh ears from the July-planted sweet corns. The fresh ears of the 20 July-planted sweet corns are able to be harvested by early October. Therefore it will be a good choice for the cropping system based on winter vegetable cash crops such as temperate garlic and onion with medium or late maturity. Among three planting dates 20 July-planted sweet corns had the best field performance in every year considering fresh ear yield, ear size, and stability to grow.
An experiment was conducted to know the effects of planting dates (March 5, 15, and 25 and April 4) and transparent polyethylene (P.E.) film treatments(tunnel, tunnel slit, and mulch) on air and soil temperatures and growth and yield of a sweet corn variety, Great Bell. Maximum air and soil temperatures and minimum air and soil temperatures were greater at tunnel>tunnel slit>mulch in that order. Differences in maximum air and soil temperatures among the P.E. film treatments were much greater than those in minimum air and soil temperatures. However, when film was opened due to high air temperature over 40$^{\circ}C$ in the tunnel, air temperature was similar but soil temperature was lower com-pared to mulch. High temperature stress could be avoided in tunnel slit without opening film by increase in the number of slits. Cold damage of corn seedlings was avoided by tunnel and reduced by tunnel slit, and frost-damaged seedlings under the mulch were recovered in few days. The number of days from planting to silking was reduced as planting date delayed. At early plantings, tunnel enhanced early growth and silking, but it delayed at late plantings because tunnel was opened during the most of day time due to high temperature. Black streaked dwarf virus(BSDV) disease was more severe at early plantings and it was reduced in tunnel slit at late plantings because plants were grown under the film at the time of infection. The number of marketable ears was similar among all treatments except mulch at March 5 planting where BSDV was severely infected. Gross income was high in tunnel and tunnel slit at March 25 planting which had more larger marketbale ears and tunnel and tunnel slit at March 5 planting which had higher market price.
Double cropping is important for increase of farm income and rate of arable land utilization. This study was carried out to obtain information for optimum plant density of the second crop in a double cropping system. A waxy corn hybrid, Chalok #2, was sown on July 10 at the first corn cropping site. Growth characteristics and yield response of fresh waxy corn were examined under different planting densities, which were 55.5, 66.6, 83.3, and 111.1 thousands plants ${ha}^{-1}$. Plant height was higher under high planting density than low planting density and 154cm at the 55.5 thousand plants ${ha}^{-1}$, and 168cm at the 111.1 thousand plant ${ha}^{-1}$. It showed same trends in ear height and gravity center height. But planting density did not affect root lodging and silking date. At the silking stage, stalk and leaf dry matter weight and leaf area index (LAI) were increased significantly with increasing planting density, Filled ear lengtg was shortened significantly under the hi임est planting density (111.1 thousand plants ${ha}^{-1}$), while ear length and ear diameter were no differences among planting densities. The number of marketable ears increased with increasing planting density, but husked fresh ear weight was the highest at 83.3 thousand plants ${ha}^{-1}$ with 11.2MT ${ha}^{-1}$and optimum planting density was estimated as about 80 thousand plants ${ha}^{-1}$.
