Novel Maritime Wireless Communication based on Mobile Technology for the Safety of Navigation: LTE-Maritime focusing on the Cell Planning and its Verification

  • Enhancing the performance of maritime wireless communication has been highlighted by the issue of cell planning in the sea area because of lack of an appropriate Propagation Loss Model (PLM). To resolve the cell planning issue in vast sea areas, it was essential to develop the (PLM) matching the intended sea area. However, there were considerable gaps between the prediction of legacy PLMs and field measurement in propagation loss and there was a need to develop the adjusted PLM (A-PLM). Therefore, cell planning was performed on this adjusted model, including modification of the base station's location, altitude, and antenna azimuth to meet the quality objectives. Furthermore, in order to verify the availability of the cell planning, Communication Service Quality Monitoring System (CS-QMS) was developed in the LTE-Maritime project to collect LTE signal quality information from the onboard equipment at regular intervals and to ensure that the service quality was high enough to satisfy the goals in each designated grid. As a result of verification, the success rate of RSRP was 95.7% for the intensive management zone (IMZ) and 96.4% for the interested zone (IZ), respectively.

  • Nowadays, the issue of maritime safety is an extremely important issue in the maritime industry and human' stress is one of the biggest causes of maritime accidents. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the human' stress and find out the relationship between it and the risk of maritime accidents occur through the assistance of BIOPAC MP-150 and BIONOMADIX system.

  • Basic performances of wireless sensor network (WSN) and power line communication (PLC) confirmed in the test bed ashore are investigated in the 3000-ton class training ship of Korea Maritime University. The ubiquitous technologies can be considered for the provision of safety and convenience in a ship. We employed WSN and PLC, as the ubiquitous technologies, at the two areas within the training ship to estimate the realization of the ubiquitous environments in a ship. The experiments show rather good results in terms of data transfer rate. However, more detailed studies concerning the connection between WSN and PLC, noises induced to power line and fading effects are required to improve the quality and the stability of the communication for the ubiquitous environments.

  • 사이버 공격은 통신기능을 수행하는 모든 장비에서 야기될 수 있으며, 통신기술의 발달로 인한 선박과 육상간 연계는 육상부문과 마찬가지로 선박부문 또한 사이버 위협 취약성에 쉽게 노출될 수 있음을 의미한다. 본 논문에서는 해상분야에서의 사이버보안 취약성을 파악하기 위하여 사이버 위협 트렌드 변화를 분석하고 타 산업 사례연구를 통한 해상 사이버보안 강화방안을 제시하였다.

Architecture Design for Maritime Centimeter-Level GNSS Augmentation Service and Initial Experimental Results on Testbed Network

  • In this paper, we overview the system development status of the national maritime precise point positioning-real-time kinematic (PPP-RTK) service in Korea, also known as the Precise POsitioning and INTegrity monitoring (POINT) system. The development of the POINT service began in 2020, and the open service is scheduled to start in 2025. The architecture of the POINT system is composed of three provider-side facilities-a reference station, monitoring station, and central control station-and one user-side receiver platform. Here, we propose the detailed functionality of each component considering unidirectional broadcasting of augmentation data. To meet the centimeter-level user positioning accuracy in maritime coverage, new reference stations were installed. Each reference station operates with a dual receiver and dual antenna to reduce the risk of malfunctioning, which can deteriorate the availability of the POINT service. The initial experimental results of a testbed from corrections generated from the testbed network, including newly installed reference stations, are presented. The results show that the horizontal and vertical accuracies satisfy 2.63 cm and 5.77 cm, respectively. For the purpose of (near) real-time broadcasting of POINT correction data, we designed a correction message format including satellite orbit, satellite clock, satellite signal bias, ionospheric delay, tropospheric delay, and coordinate transformation parameters. The (near) real-time experimental setup utilizing (near) real-time processing of testbed network data and the designed message format are proposed for future testing and verification of the system.

심해 무인잠수정 해미래와 실해역 탐사 (Development of a Deep-sea ROV, Hemire and its sea trial)

  • 해미래는 한국해양연구원 해양시스템안전연구소에서 해양수산부의 지원으로 2001년부터 6년에 걸쳐 순수 국내 기술로 개발한 6, 000m급 과학탐사용 섬해 무인잠수정이다. 해미래는 2006년 4월에 동해 1차 시도에서 1, 065m까지, 10월 동해 2차 시도에서 2, 026m 해저변까지, 11월에 필리핀 앞 태평양에서 5, 775m 해저변까지 시험 탐사를 성공적으로 수행하였다. 이로서 우리나라는 세계에서 4번째로 독자적인 섬해 무인 잠수정 설계 및 개발 기술을 확보하였으며, 앞으로 국가 전략 기술로서의 섬해 연구를 위한 기초를 마련하였다. 본 논문에서는 섬해 무인잠수정의 구성과 기능에 대하여 설명하고 해미래의 개발 및 시험 과정에 대하여 간단히 설명한다. 또한 첫 탐사를 위한 준비 과정과 3차례에 결친 시험 탐사 결과를 요약한다.

A Study on the Strategy of Establishing China Maritime Performing Party System

  • Based upon the analysis of the former paper, this paper suggest that present problems existing in China's relevant laws and regulations, the difficulties in constructing China's maritime performing party system, the strategy in constructing maritime performing party in China. The writer focused on the strategies of establishing maritime performing party in China, and analyzed the problems which needed to pay attention. Finally, in the writer's view, China does not need to take part in the Convention, and can establish the maritime performing system by amending China Maritime Code.

  • Nowadays, maritime communication systems need high data rate, reliability, and consistency in order to equivalently provide navigating ships with diverse multimedia services as in terrestrial communication systems. For this purpose, we conceptualize and design the maritime network for ships equipped with a multiband communication system which cost-effectively supports multimedia services according to several radiofrequency bands, such as HF, VHF, and satellite frequencies. We also introduce two service scenarios targeted for the maritime network; ship multimedia service (SMS) and real-time maritime logistics location tracking (RML2T). In addition, we specify related works according to three lower network layers (i.e., physical, data-link, and network layers) upon designing the network.
