  • The present study examined the effectiveness of repeated marriage checkups at intervals of six months in a Family Center in Seoul. To achieve this, the pilot study protocol (Park, 2019) was adapted, emphasizing strength-based, counseling-oriented approaches. Two couples and family therapists with master's degrees were trained and their practice was monitored to ensure program fidelity. The methods employed for the assessment of marriage checkup were an online survey, a video recording of couple problem-solving, and a clinical interview. A total of 14 couples participated in the 1st checkup, 10 of whom also completed the 2nd checkup. Couples with varying levels of marital satisfaction participated in the program. Descriptive statistics indicated gradual increases over 8-9 months in diverse indices such as marital satisfaction and relationship strength, while other indices fluctuated slightly but converged to higher levels over time. A non-parametric analysis appropriate for small samples demonstrated statistically significant increases over the 8-9 months in marital satisfaction among couples. The current study evidenced the effectiveness of repeated marriage checkups in the Family Center, which is the primary public institution for family policy and services in Korea. Repeated marriage checkups are therefore a promising way to enhance couples' relationship health and improve the family management system of the Family Center.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the relations among psycho-social factors regarding child neglect and abuse using the data from the 2013 Korea National Survey on Children and Youth. Methods: Data from a sample of 1,062 primary caregivers with young children were analyzed with the SPSS and AMOS programs to examine the interrelationships among depression, parenting stress, marital satisfaction, parent-child attachment, and child neglect or maltreatment. Results: Depression, stress, and attachment had a direct influence on child neglect and abuse. Satisfaction with marital relationship, parenting stress, and attachment were found to play mediating roles in accounting for child neglect and abuse, explaining 12% of the variance. The results of multi group path analysis showed that some coefficients were different according to the age group of the children. For caregivers with infants, parenting stress did not predict either attachment or child maltreatment, whereas for caregivers with toddlers, depression did not have a significant effect on attachment. Conclusion: In order to prevent child maltreatment, efforts should be made to develop community-based psycho-social support interventions focused on marital relationship as well as parent-child dyads and to provide practical child care support.

  • This study examines if self-esteem mediates the relationship between marital satisfaction and parenting practice by using the Panel Study of Korean Children of Korea Institute of Child Care and Education, and empirically analyzes if household income causes the difference of mediating effect. For this research, the 3rd Panel Study of Korean Children (2010), including 1,802 children whose average age is 25.75 months (SD=1.37), is employed. Based on the preceding studies which demonstrated the effect of marital satisfaction on mothers' parenting behavior directly and indirectly, a research model is designed by predicting that marital satisfaction might have a positive effect on parenting practice through the mediation of self-esteem. Structuring equation was used to analyze the model as the appropriate research method. The result of the data analysis utilizing a structural equation model is as follows: Firstly, the higher the marital satisfaction of a mother is, the more it influences her positive child-rearing attitude, not only directly, but also indirectly through her self-worth. Secondly, the modifying effect in accordance with the level of the income of a household was found to be meaningful only in the influences of the marital satisfaction to the self-worth. This study result suggests that the enhancement of the self-worth of a mother will contribute to improving the quality of child-rearing, regardless of the level of the income of a household.

The primary triad experiences were composed of the parents' differentiation level of couple relationship and the parent-child relationship including family rule, triangulation and communication. Dating relationship satisfaction included such subscales as problem-solving communication, global satisfaction, affection communication and time together. The study data were collected from 382 college students by using self-administered questionnaire method. The results showed that parents' differentiation was positively correlated with self-esteem and all components of dating relationship satisfaction and that family rule was negatively associated only with problem-solving communication. Triangulation was negatively related with most components of dating relationship satisfaction and self-esteem, while parent-child communication showed positive correlations with the same variables. Path analysis results showed that self-esteem mediated the effect of most variables of primary triad experiences on dating relationship satisfaction. In addition, variables of the primary triad experience had direct influences on most components of dating relationship satisfaction. Self-esteem was found to be the most powerful variable influencing dating relationship satisfaction. The findings of the study were discussed in terms of pre-marital education and counseling.

  • Purpose: This study was to evaluate the casual relationship between the factors in the Pender's model and to explain health promoting behaviors among middle-aged women in order to facilitate nursing interventions for this population group. Method: 116 women between 40$\~$60 years old living in Incheon were asked to complete a questionnaire about their health. The data was collected between March and November, 2003. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and the correctional analysis SPSSWIN 11.5 program. The LISREL 8.12 program was used to find the best fit model which explained a causal relationship of the variables. Results: The climacteric symptoms of middle-aged women negatively correlated with health promoting behaviors. However, marital satisfaction positively correlated with health promoting behaviors. Conclusion: Marital satisfaction and climacteric symptoms had an effect on health promoting behaviors. Therefore, based on this study, we plan to develop a health education program to decrease climacteric symptoms and to promote marital satisfaction for health promotion.
