  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are anthropogenic contaminants found globally in water, ice, soil, air and sediment. Modern analytical techniques allow us to determine these chemicals in environmental matrices at parts per trillion levels or lower. Environmental forensic on PCBs opens up new avenues of investigation such as transport and fate of water masses in oceans, sedimentation, onset of primary production, migration of marine mammals, their population distribution and pharmacokinetics of drugs inside organisms. By virtue of persistence, bioaccumulation, bioconcentration and structure-activity relationship PCBs emerge as unconventional chemical tracers of new sort.

  • In this paper the recent studies of digital governor for the Diesel Engine in Korea is summarized and that of usage in the marine and land field as of power plant is analyzed for the interest and development of the enterprise with relation with relation to this industrial part. Our investigation shows that until now the studies on the digitl governor are mainly carried out in KMU and land usage for the power plants is increased gradually because reliance of digital governor is improved and system for the maneuvering and monitoring the plants is computerized.

홍수시 4대강에서 유입되는 부유폐기물 성상 조사 (Investigation of Floating Debris Characteristics Drained from 4 Big River on a Flooding)

  • 본 조사는 장마나 홍수로 인하여 강에서 해양으로 유입되는 부유폐기물의 성상을 파악하여, 해양폐기물 저감대책을 마련하기 위한 자료로 활용하기 위해 한국의 4대강인 한강, 낙동강, 금강, 영산강을 대상으로 2002년 7원과 8원 두 달간 수행하였다. 부유폐기물의 유입은 강우의 정토에 따라 차이가 있으나, 일일 강수량 150mm 이하의 일시적인 호우경보 시에도 부유폐기물의 유임은 미미하였으며, 지속적이며 다량의 강우량이 발생하거나 국지성 호우에 의하여 홍수가 발생될 때 대부분의 부유폐기물이 유입됨을 알 수 있었다 따라서 강에서 유입되는 부유폐기물은 지속적으로 해양에 유입되는 것이 아니라, 일시에 특히 홍수시 다량으로 며칠에 걸쳐서 유입된다. 또한 발생된 부유폐기물 모두가 해양으로 유입되지 않고 폐기물의 상당량이 강변에 집적되는 것을 확인하였다. 각 강의 특성에 따라 부유물의 구성비는 달랐지만 부유물들의 전반이상은 식물 쓰레기이다. 그러므로 해양에 유입되는 부유폐기물 수거 방안마련을 위해서는 식물쓰레기에 의한 영향을 고려해야 한다.

  • 이 연구는 우리나라 및 영국ㆍ미국ㆍ일본ㆍ네델란드의 해양사고에 관한 조사ㆍ심판제도를 다루며, 우리나라의 조사ㆍ심판제도를 주요 해운국가의 제도와 비교ㆍ분석하여 우리 제도의 미비점을 도출하고 다음과 같은 개선방안을 제안한다. (1) 해양안전심판원의 소속, 예산, 인사 및 청사를 독립시켜 단독기관으로 한다. (2) 해양안전심판원의 조사기능과 심판기능을 독립된 조사기관으로 이원화한다. (3) 사고원인을 규명한 결과를 행정기관 등에 권고를 할 수 있는 권한을 가지도록 한다. (4) 조사관 및 심판관을 다양한 전공의 전문가로 구성한다. (5) 조사시 사법기관과의 상호 협력체제를 구축한다. (6) 국제협력업무를 담당하는 전문부서와 인력을 갖춘다.

Validation of Statistical Analysis-based Aberrancy Probability Using Marine Simulations

  • To perform the Maritime Safety Audi Scheme, $10^{-4}$ was constantly applied without adjustment when evaluating the proximity of the fairway. The necessity of applying the different aberrancy probabilities from the different proximity of the fairway depending on the shape of the route and the size of the ship was validated using marine simulations. Marine simulation was performed to evaluate the validity of statistical analysis-based aberrancy probability according to the different shapes of routes and ship size presented in the previous study. As results, the validity of the criterion of the statistical analysis-based aberrancy probability was confirmed by comparing with the results of simulation-based aberrancy probabilities. The results support that the aberrancy probabilities by the types of a vessel could be different based on the type and size of vessels. The results motivate that further investigation is required to find the reasonable criteria of the aberrancy probabilities for the maritime traffic safety audit according to the fairway shape and the size of the vessel.

  • Chemical investigation of a marine-derived fungus, Penicillium sp. 108YD020, resulted in the discovery of six bile acid derivatives, glycocholic acid (1), glycocholic acid methyl ester (2), cholic acid (3), glycochenodeoxycholic acid (4), glycodeoxycholic acid methyl ester (5), and cholic acid methyl ester (6). The structures of six bile acid derivatives 1-6 were determined by the detailed analysis of 1D, 2D NMR and LC-MS data, along with chemical methods and literature data analysis.

Recent Discovery of Bioactive Natural Products from Taiwanese Marine Invertebrates

  • The secondary metabolites from Taiwanese marine soft corals and sponges have attracted much attention because they possess considerable potential biological activities. To explore the origin of bioactivity, many cytotoxic natural products were isolated and characterized in the past few years. For examples, The lipophilic extracts from marine sponges Petrosia elastica and Ircinia formosana were found active against several human tumor cells. The investigation of the gorgonian Junceela has also resulted in the discovery of a series of new juncenolides. Bioassay-directed fractionation of Clavularia viridis yielded seven new prostanoids. These compounds have been tested and evaluated as potential antitumor agents. The soft corals of the genus Cespitularia produced novel secondary metabolites with diverse chemical structures and interesting biological activities. Four new norditerpenoids, designated cespitulactones and cespihypotins were isolated from Cespitularia hypotentaculata. Cespitulactones are novel structures having a bond cleavage between C-10 and C-11. In addition, three novel diterpenes were isolated from C. taeniata and designated cespitulactams A, B and C having a phenylethyl amino side chain.

Investigation on electrochemical performance of Al anode material for marine growth prevention system

  • Aluminum anode of marine growth prevention system for ship is installed in seachest or sea water strainer. The Al anode is connected to a control panel that feeds a current to the anode. The dissolved ions produced by the anode are transferred in sea water, spreads through the sea water pipe system and creates a protective film in the pipelines. Thereby, corrosion in pipeline system significantly is reduced. In application on condition as a steel ship, the big accident can be caused by the corrosion. Accordingly, in this research, we evaluated influence of applied current and flow velocity on electrochemical characteristics of Al anode for marine growth prevention system (MGPS). Based on the results of the erosion-cavitation experiments, cavitation rate increased greatly until 120 min. of the experimental time and decreased a little at the point of 180 min. where pit grew and merging occurred but showed a tendency of steadily increasing consumption rates. Based on the results of the Tafel analysis, compared to static states, corrosion current densities show a rapidly increasing tendency when flow occurred.
