This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of using Hermetia illucens larvae as environmental purification insects on ammonia and Hanwoo manure for 15 days in the Hanwoo farms. H.illucens larvae were allocated into four treatment groups and three replicates using a randomized block design. The treatments were as follows: control, normal 1000 g of Hanwoo manure, T1, 1000 g of Hanwoo manure + 100 g of 2nd instar H.illucens L. larvae, T2, 1000 g of Hanwoo manure + 100 g of 3rd instar H.illucens L. larvae, and T3, 1000 g of Hanwoo manure + 100 g of 4th instar H.illucens L. larvae. After 0 days, ammonia fluxes did not occur in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instar H.illucens larvae treatments (p<0.05). Among the characteristics of Hanwoo manure, the pH and nitrogen content increased for each larvae instar of H.illucens, whereas ADF and NDF content decreased (p<0.05). In particular, nitrogen contents were found to be highest in the 3rd instar larvae of H.illucens owing to their greater ability to decompose Hanwoo manure than larvae at other growth stages.
Owing to raising number of livestock, we have a problem to solve disposal of livestock manure. We know that soil have the digestion ability of livestock manure as one of multifunctionality. I carried out to investigate of livestock manure digestion (especially pig and chicken manure) that is considered as nitrogen fertilizer in upland crops. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The amount of pig manure was(1999) 4,592,375 tons/year, and chicken manure was 4,488,166 tons/year and equivalent to 41,912 tons N/year and 76,223 tons N/year, respectively. 2. The definition of the digestion ability of livestock manure is as the maximum application amount of livestock manure without injuring soil and plant. And the calculation model of digestion ability of livestock manure(ALMD) is follows: ALMD = amount of nitrogen requirement per each upland crop / {(total nitrogen contents in livestock manure) ${\times}$ (nitrogen fertilizer efficiency of livestock manure)} 3. The amount of ability of pig and chicken manure for upland crops (dry based) were 1,142.9kg/10a and 540.1kg/10a, respectively. 4. The order of amount of digestion ability of livestock manure on upland were vegetables > orchards > miscellaneous grains(corn) > barley > potatoes > pulses > oil seeds & special crops ) fodder crops) mulberry.
For the reduction of ammonia ($NH_3$) volatilization from the cow manure composting process, a cow manure pile was covered with vinyl (white polyethylene) and the ammonia emissions were evaluated using the dynamic chamber system for 47 days. Nitrogen and phosphorus loss from cow manure pile by rainfall was also measured in this study. In the cow manure pile without covering, the amount of $NH_3$ emission was 0.78 N kg/Mg which accounted for 9.4% of total nitrogen contents in the cow manure. Eighty nine percent of the total $NH_3$ emission during experimental period from the cow manure pile without covering was emitted for the first 21 days. The vinyl covering of cow manure pile reduced 91% of $NH_3$ emission compared to the pile without covering. The amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus loss by rainfall from cow manure pile without covering were 1.27 N kg/Mg and 0.23 P kg/Mg for 47 days, respectively. Results from this study demonstrated that vinyl covering of cow manure pile could reduce $NH_3$ emission and loss of nitrogen and phosphorus by rainfall during composting.
Cattle feedlot manure could be used effectively as the solid fuel for heating of agricultural facilities. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the thermal and physicochemical characteristics of solid fuel extruded with cattle feedlot manure. Calorific values of the solid fuel extruded with cattle feedlot manure, which was dried to the moisture contents of 0.0% (w.b) and 35.0% (w.b,) were 14,906 kJ/kg and 11,797 kJ/kg, respectively. Calorific value of extruded solid fuel was linearly decreased with the increase of moisture content. The first, second, and third reaction point during thermal pyrolysis of solid fuels extruded with cattle feedlot manure was investigated as $108.1^{\circ}C$, $312.2^{\circ}C$, and $459.4^{\circ}C$, respectively. The maximum reaction point was presented at the temperature of $312.2^{\circ}C$. Weight loss of extruded cattle feedlot manure during thermal pyrolysis until $600^{\circ}C$ was reached to about 60%. Volume decrease of initial extruded cattle feedlot manure was 61% during drying for the use as solid fuel. Maximum strength of extruded cattle feedlot manure, which was dried as the moisture content of 10% (w.b.) was 41,9150 N/$m^2$. Ignition gas analysis of extruded cattle feedlot manure presented that it has small amount of $NO_x$ and $SO_x$. It was shown that dried cattle feedlot manure had main components of C and O including small amount of Mg, Si, and Ca.

The application of liquid swine manure to soil has been commonly reported to increase crop productivity by improving plant nutrient availability. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of liquid swine manure (LSM) application on yield of green manure crops in paddy. Three different application rates of LSM equivalent to 25%, 50%, and 75% of standard fertilization rate of P were applied to the paddy field after rice harvest, and two cover crops, hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), were subsequently mix-seeded and cultivated. Plant height of barley was 7% higher in LSM P25% and LSM P50% compared to control treatment (no LSM application), while no significant difference was observed between LSM P75% and control. However, there were no significant differences in plant height of hairy vetch among treatments. Dry matter (DM) yield of green manure increased with LSM application rate, reaching a maximum at LSM P50% (38 and 17% yield increase over control for hairy vetch and barley, respectively), but it decreased at LSM P75% rate. Nitrogen production by green manure crops was the highest in LSM P50% treatment, where the amount of produced N was 57% higher than the optimum N fertilization level for rice ($90kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$). Excess green manure biomass above an optimum level can be removed and utilized either for incorporation into nearby cropland or for sale as fresh forage. Therefore, it is concluded that the application rate of LSM P50% is recommendable for the maximum biomass and nitrogen production from green manure crops in paddy.

Ammonia is a very important constituent of the atmospheric environment because it is the most dominant gaseous alkaline species present in the atmosphere. Ammonia is known to affect ecosystems at relatively low concentration. Ammonia flux from livestock facilities can be regulated by a number of environmental factors (pH, ammonium ion, temperature, wind speed, etc). The increases in wind speed above manure from 0.0 m/s to 1.0 7m/s resulted in 2.5 times increases in ammonia flux. Wind speed and ammonia flux showed 0.982. A linear relationship with a correlation coefficient (r=0.982). When manure temperature increased from $3^{\circ}C$ to $36^{\circ}C$, the manure pH decreased approximately 0.30 to 0.46. As wind speed above the manure increased from 0.0 m/s to 1.07 m/s, ammonia flux increased approximately 2.5 times. The increasing manure temperature from $3^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$, raised ammonia flux from 2.0 to 3.6 times (2.6 times in average similarly). The increases of manure temperature from $3^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ increased ammonia flux from 5.7 to 12.9 times (8.5 times in average). In this study, the correlation coefficient between ammonia flux and manure temperature was found from 0.972 to 0.989. Results of our research showed that ammonium ion concentration, pH of manure and wind speed were important factors in controlling the ammonia flux from manure livestock facilities.

Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the total heavy metals contents and chemical forms in the animal manure compost. Materials and methods: A total of 109 compost samples were collected throughout the country and classified into three groups in accordance with the raw materials; pig manure, poultry manure and mixed(pig+poultry+cattle) manure. The compost samples were analyzed for total metal content and sequential chemical extraction to estimate the quantities of metals. Results: Concentrations of Zn and Cu in several compost samples were higher than the maximum acceptable limits by the Korea Compost Quality Standards. Concentrations of Zn, Cu, and Cd in compost samples were 257~5,102, 68~1,243, and 0.02~2.54 mg/kg respectively, while Cr, Ni, As, and Pb were < 20 mg/kg. The concentrations of heavy metals in pig manure compost were higher than those of both the poultry and the mixed manure compost. The predominant forms for extracted metals were Cr, Ni, Zn, As, and Pb, residual; Cu, organic; and Cd, carbonate. Conclusions: Results indicate that the Zn and Cu contents in compost were higher than other heavy metals and the heavy metal contents were greater in pig manure compost followed by mixed and poultry manure compost. To prevent the accumulation of heavy metals in soil where animal manure compost is applied, strategy for reducing heavy metal concentrations in animal manure and compost must be considered.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of animal stable manure on the dry matter yield, botanical composition, crude protein content rates, in vitro digestibility and soil characters with treatments, which were divided into cattle manure, swine manure and poultly excreta of 375 and 750kg/lOa, respectively. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. A comparison made on the grass yield for one year period following the termination of the experiment did not indicate any signification in the yield of dry matter difference between chemical fertilizer treatment and 750kg/10a of organic manure. 2. Botanical composition was not shown an increasing of weed or bare land in organic manure of 375 and 750kg/lOa application during the whole period of growth. 3. Crude protein content and in vitro digestibility were shown an increasing tendency according to the increase of organic manure application. 4. Crude protein yield in organic manure of 750kg/10a was not a large difference compared with chemical fertilizer treatment. 5. Soil composition of organic manure had higher than the soil composition of chemical fertilizer treatment, which was shown an increasing tendency according to the increase of organic manure. 6. Therefore, It was suggested that the effect of organic manure on dry matter yield, botanical composition was similar to chemical fertilizer treatment and soil composition of organic manure had higher organic matter, available phosphate, potassium and C.E.C than the soil composition of chemical fertilizer treatment.

This study was conducted to analyze growth responses of fast growing tree species(8 clones of hybrid poplars, Salix alba, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Liriodendron tulipifera, Acer okamotoanum, and Quercus palustris), the chemical characteristics of soil and $NO_3-N$ concentration of groundwater in a plantation applied with liquid pig manure. Concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorous in the soil treated with liquid pig manure were higher than that of the soil treated without liquid pig manure. With the exception of S. alba, DBH(Diameter at Breast Height) growth of all the fast growing tree species treated with liquid pig manure was higher than that of the species treated without liquid pig manure. In liquid pig manure treatment group, P. euramericana 'Eco28' clone showed the best performance in height and DBH growth. Concentration of nitrogen in the leaf with liquid pig manure was higher than that of the leaf treated without liquid pig manure. Based on the $NO_3-N$ concentration of groundwater analyzed during the experimental period, there was no evidence that groundwater was polluted by the liquid pig manure applied at the plantation.
