KEY BARRIERS AND THEIR STRATEGIC RESPONSES TO ACTIVATE KNOWLEDGE SHARING IN CONSTRUCTION ORGANIZATIONS

  • Being in a knowledge-based industry, many construction organizations are seeking to manage their own knowledge in an effective way. To manage knowledge, the organizations must motivate in-house people to share their knowledge. However, some barriers to knowledge sharing do exist and researches on these barriers considering construction organizations' characteristics seem rare. This study aims to identify key barriers to knowledge sharing considering the characteristics of construction organizations. Based on the identification, strategic responses to each key barrier are presented in two perspectives of technical and behavioral approach to activate knowledge sharing.

  • The gas management system for a vertical launching system must be safely managed within a ship. The plenum and uptake are capable of containing and surviving a full-burning restrained firing without loss of gas management integrity. To secure the safety, the pressure characteristics with a supersonic under-expanded jet on a gas management system are numerically investigated using computational fluid dynamics. The results of present analysis and the preliminary design of the gas management system are described in this paper.

  • Purpose: It can be said that the 21st century is the age of creativity. However creativity has been relatively less considered in comparison with control and continuous improvement in quality management. How to incorporate creativity into quality management is treated in this paper. Methods: The opposing characteristics of quality and creativity are examined, and the possible outcomes resulted from the conflict are reviewed. Previous researches on managing evolutionary and revolutionary changes are also examined. Results: Quality and creativity require each other although they have incompatible characteristics, and can be incorporated into the innovation cycle. Conclusion: Creative thinking tools such as SIT should be included in the quality training and education for the effective operation of the innovation cycle.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the safety factors of the public transportation and recommend the experimental factors of customer satisfaction. The survey consist of 28 questions of 5 factors about users characteristics on roads, railways, ships, and flights. As a result of multiple regression analysis, we knew that there are three potential factors affecting customer satisfaction. The Factors are named 'expected', 'attitude', 'management', and the variable of factors affect customer satisfaction significantly. Therefore, it is good strategy for effective working to improve customer satisfaction that maintain attitude with safety minds, try to specialized management, and creating expectation for safety considering the difference by the type of public transportation. After considering the meaningful result, for the development of policies for customer satisfaction for safety, we have to consider expected, attitude, and management factors of workers and officials that influence customer safety and try to improve the managerial factors considering the characteristics of their own.

  • The need to further improve food quality and reduce food waste leads to increased attention for the development of Food Supply Chain Management (FSCM) which considers intrinsic characteristics of food supply chains besides traditional supply chain management (SCM) objectives such as cost and responsiveness. Growing consciousness of society towards sustainable development brings additional objectives to the food supply chains and the fast evolution of sustainable development results in the development of a new fast-growing concept: Sustainable Food Supply Chain Management (SFSCM). In response to these developments, researchers have developed various decision support tools that can be used for handling progressively increasing complexity along the alteration process from SCM to FSCM and now to SFSCM. This study reviewed literature on sustainable food logistics management to identify logistical key issues and relevant challenges. The evaluation of the reviewed papers shows that towards obtaining sustainability together with considering intrinsic characteristics of food supply chains, there is a gap between the needs of the practice and the current available method.

A Study on the Designation of Nonpoint Pollution Management Region (비점오염원 관리지역 도출에 관한 연구)

  • Amended Water Quality Environment Preservation Law enacted that the areas where nonpoint pollution is serious can be designated as Nonpoint Source Management Region. According to Section 54 of Water Quality Environment Preservation Law, corresponding watersheds are areas where runoff from nonpoint pollution source may deteriorate river and lake water quality, residents' health and property, and ecosystem. The criteria are as followings; i) where nonpoint source contribution result in or will result in significant ecological destruction, iii) national or local industrial complexes and cities having population greater than one million where nonpoint source managements are necessary, iv) where specific measurement is necessary because of its geological and stratigraphic characteristics. In this research, detailed designation criteria was developed reflecting current nonpoint source management situation and its discharge characteristics. Depending on the result, target regions were also suggested. In additions, it will be desirable that the target regions are prioritized considering institutional execution availability, stakeholder's agreement, and connection with existing nonpoint source pollution management measures.

Scenario-based Learning: Experiences from Construction Management Courses

  • Scenario-based learning (SBL) has been used in a variety of training situations across different disciplines. Despite its seemly widespread use in construction management discipline, very few attempts have been made to explore its effectiveness and the respective students' learning experience. Using a survey research design, this study aims to investigate students' perceptions on SBL approach in construction management courses. The specific objectives are: (i) to identify the characteristics of a favourable SBL environment, and (ii) to explore the students' learning experience and effectiveness of the SBL approach. The results show that the four characteristics of a favourable SBL environment are: effective team formulation, constant engagement with lecturer, working in a group, and incorporation of motivational incentive for participation. The students really appreciated the opportunities to apply concepts learnt in the lectures in their SBL group work. Also, they perceived that the SBL approach is effective in developing their reflective and critical thinking skills, analytic and problem-solving skills and their ability to work as a team. These findings should facilitate more critical approaches to similar form of teaching methods.

  • Since 2003, state transportation study core technology development is being promoted as part of the bimodal trams operating in accordance with the development of refractive vehicle as research infrastructure for building high-tech road transport system has been the research and development. Bimodal trams of refraction as the vehicle for him to introduce domestic first ever operation management system also developed in Korea according to case-based technology system, but most of the country, and, in this study, mainly those based on technology integration building management system and the bimodal trams of refraction of a vehicle operated was to highlight the features and benefits. Bimodal tram station itself is the way the exclusive properties and to operate the route with large transport capacity has the characteristics of the railway, but the only routes such as railroad lines is not of closed roads under certain circumstances, the flexibility to use has to be integrated operations management system of bimodal trams characteristics of the railroads and public transportation by combining the characteristics of a flexible, convenient and secure services to users with the aim of providing research and will denote the system developed. In this study, bimodal integration system required for the operation of the tram station around the wired and wireless network management center, applying the organic integration into one system so that you have to be centrally managed. In addition, the existing traffic management system operates as a unidirectional rather than monitoring all system-wide management via the interactive network through real-time requests and responses were configured to allow management and control. These findings of the existing traffic operation management system that you can jump step can be based on future unmanned vehicles and related systems through control of the operation management system will be offered as a basis.

An Evaluation on Management Types by Characteristics of Urban Parks (도시공원 특성에 따른 관리유형의 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest customized management methods tailored to the characteristics of each type of park. Related literature was reviewed to determine the types of and management methods for urban parks to discuss the possibility of the involvement of citizens in park management and committing park management to the private sector. As a result of analyzing the literature, it has been found that each park should be managed separately according to its type in light of its characteristics and the strengths and weaknesses of each management method. For this reason, this must be a very important element for preventing damaging behavior at tourist destinations. First, natural mountainous parks are ordinary parks that do not require any professional management knowledge or skills. Accordingly, these parks should be managed by the districts in which they are located. Second, eco-oriented parks ask for specialized management. As domestic cases show, it will be advisable to commit the management of these parks to specialized, highly-experienced private organizations. Third, facilities-centered parks are large in size in response to the diverse needs of citizens, and it seems that a combination of different methods is better than merely sticking to any particular method.

The Determinants of Human Resource Information System Success in Japanese Manufacturing Companies

  • Purpose - The study sought to examine the relationship between individual characteristics and system features and Human Resource Information System (HRIS) success in Japanese manufacturing companies in Malaysia. Research Design, Data, and Methodology - This study adopt quantitative approach to investigate the relationship between individual characteristics and system features and HRIS. Toward this objective, a total of 700 questionnaires were mailed to a representative of the organization. A total of 187 questionnaires were returned, and only 145 were usable for further analysis, representing a response rate of 20.71%. Result - Results indicated that individual characteristics and two dimensions of system characteristics (ease of use and training) were significantly related to HRIS success. Unexpectedly, the results showed that the third dimension of system features (documentation) was unrelated to HRIS success. Conclusions - The results partially support the underlying arguments that individual characteristics and system characteristics have significant influences on HRIS success. The finding suggests that HRIS success in the organization can be generated as a result of good implementation of system support and employees' readiness to apply HRIS in their jobs.
