  • The aim of the present study was to identify the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes associated with maxillary anterior dentigerous cysts in children. Among 55 patients who had been diagnosed with maxillary anterior dentigerous cysts, 33 patients had cysts located in the incisor region and 22 had cysts located in the canine region. Cysts in the incisor region were 7.2-fold more prevalent in male patients, while cysts in the canine region were 1.75-fold more prevalent in female patients. For cysts in the incisor region, marsupialization was performed in 21 cases and enucleation in 12 cases. In the canine region, marsupialization was performed in 20 cases and enucleation in 2 cases. Spontaneous eruptions of the displaced teeth in the incisor and canine region were 90% and 54.5%, respectively. Among patients which spontaneous eruption occurred, patients with cysts in the incisor region underwent orthodontic treatment more often due to malocclusion. This study is expected to be used as fundamental data for establishing future treatment plans by providing the analyzed results of distribution and characteristics of dentigerous cysts involving the maxillary anterior tooth.

  • 1. Introduction Community medicine with the concept of comprehensive medical care and an ideal medical care delivery system not only for an individual or family but for the whole community has emerged. In April 1970, the Presbyterian Medical Center started a hospital based community health service project in order to improve the health of the people in rural areas. Prior to commencing a comprehensive medical care system, a family survey was needed. The major objective of this survey was to obtain information concerning the people and their environment so as to be able to plan and implement a comprehensive medical care program in Soyang-Myun. 2. Survey Method An interview using a family record form was carried out for each household. This family record form was designed to get information about demography, family planning, environmental sanitation and vital statistics. Prior to beginning, the members of the survey team were trained in interviewing techniques for three days. The team consisted of a public health nurse, four nurse-aides, a sanitarian and four health extension workers who are working in our project, The survey was carried out during the period November 1971 to March 1972. 3. • Purpose: We tried to evaluate the long term efficacy and positive predictive factors of interferon-alpha treatment in children with chronic hepatitis B. Methods: The study population included 113 children who received interferon therapy between May 1982 and July 2002 (20 years) for chronic hepatitis B in Department of Pediatrics, Yonsei University College of Medicine. Male to female ratio was 2.3 : 1 and the mean age at diagnosis was $11.1{\pm}4.1$ years old. Response to treatment was defined as normalization of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), disappearance of HBeAg and HBV-DNA Eighty two children responded while 32 did not. Interferon-alpha was given intramuscularly for 6 months at a dosage of $3{\times}10^6$ unit, 3 times weekly. In relapsed cases, lamivudine or interferon retreatment was done. Results: Seroconversion rate was 77.0% in terms of HBeAg, 74.3% in terms of HBV-DNA, and 80.5% in terms of ALT normalization after treatment. Seroconversion rate of both HBeAg and HBV-DNA was 72.6%. Analyzed by life table method, the effect of the treatment had been maintained over 10 years after cessation of therapy. Pre-treatment ALT level was the only significant positive predictive factor of response. Eleven cases (13.4%) relapsed, and 2 out of 3 showed response when treated with lamivudine and 1 out of 3 with interferon retreatment. Conclusion: Interferon-alpha showed significant efficacy in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B in our study. Further studies about the effect of interferon therapy on complications of hepatitis such as hepatocarcinoma, cirrhosis are warranted.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the stress profile that adolescent perceives by using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA), and to examine the effect of characteristics variable per groups that appeared in profile. By using the cross-section data of 'A survey on the human right of Korean children and adolescent in 2013' issued by National Youth Policy Institute, the LPA concerning the stress type was conducted and surveyed 9,521 adolescents from fourth grade in elementary school to seniors in high school nationwide. The result of this study shows that two class types were selected according to the goodness-of-fit index and latent class classification rate. Type 1 is named low-risk group as they show low level, whereas type 2 is named relative risk group as they show high level. In order to predict the characteristics of adolescent stress, the study conducted Binary Logistic Regression analysis on the basis of low-risk group. There is higher probability to belong to relative risk group, the more they are female students than male students, the less their subjective health condition and happiness, the more runaway experience, the less school grades and the less economic affluence in their household. The implication of this research, its limitation and direction of follow-up research were suggested.

  • Purpose: The use of cyclosporine and mini-dose methotrexate (MTX) is a common strategy for graftversus- host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis in allogeneic transplants. We investigated whether patients who receive fewer than the planned MTX doses are at increased risk for GVHD. Methods: The study cohort included 103 patients who received allogeneic transplants at the Department of Pediatrics of The Catholic University of Korea College of Medicine, from January 2010 to December 2011. MTX was administered on days 1, 3, 6, and 11 after transplant at a dose of 5 $mg/m^2$ each. Within the cohort, 76 patients (74%) received all 4 doses of MTX [MTX(4) group], while 27 patients (26%) received 0-3 doses [MTX(0-3) group]. Results: Although there was no difference in neutrophil engraftment between the 2 groups, platelet engraftment was significantly faster in the MTX(4) group (median, 15 days), compared to the MTX(0- 3) group (median, 25 days; P =0.034). The incidence of grades II-IV acute GVHD was not different between the MTX(4) and MTX(0-3) groups (P =0.417). In the multivariate study, human leukocyte antigen mismatch was the most significant factor causing grades II-IV acute GVHD (P =0.002), followed by female donor to male recipient transplant (P =0.034). No difference was found between the MTX(4) and MTX (0-3) groups regarding grades III-IV acute GVHD, chronic GVHD, and disease-free survival. Conclusion: Our results indicate that deviations from the full dose schedule of MTX for GVHD prophylaxis do not lead to increased incidence of either acute or chronic GVHD.

  • This study examined the relationships among halitosis, stress and psychological status using a cross-sectional survey of 3,689 adolescents (1,805 male 1,884 female) from the 2010 Korean Survey on the Health of Youth and Children. The related factors of halitosis were checked and the path model was also examined using AMOS 19.0 programs. The prevalence of halitosis was 27.4%. Based on path analysis, the significant coefficients paths were as follows: $halitosis{\rightarrow}stress$, $halitosis{\rightarrow}depression$, $halitosis{\rightarrow}anxiety$, $halitosis{\rightarrow}tension$, $halitosis{\rightarrow}hostility$. Halitosis had an indirect effect on the psychological status linked to depression, anxiety, tension, and hostility via stress. Overall, the results provide stronger support for the halitosis impact of stress and psychological health. Moreover, the effective prevention of halitosis may be important for understanding the specific psychological factors.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the mediating effect of the change of grit in the relationship that the change of exercise time of adolescents leads to the change of self-esteem. The data of 2,438 students (male = 1,327, female = 1,111) were used for the analysis, excluding cases including missing values in the data from the wave 1 and wave 2 of the Korean Children and Youth Panel 2018. The standardized residual score generated through regression analysis from the values in wave 1 to the values in wave 2 was used as a variable for the amount of change. As a results, the correlation between the amount of change in all three variables was found to be significant. Result of the hierarchical regression analysis revealed that it was confirmed that the partial mediating effect that the change of exercise time directly or indirectly affects the change of self-esteem through the change of grit is significant. These results indicate that adolescents, exercise time is gradually decreasing as the grade goes up, and this has an effect on the reduction of grit and self-esteem.

  • Purpose : It is known that 3-50 percent of type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1DM) patients develop autoimmune thyroid disease. We analyzed the clinical characteristics of autoimmune thyroid disease(AITD) developed in patients with T1DM in Korean. Methods : The medical records of 139 patients, who were followed up in Department of Pediatrics, Seoul National University Children's Hospital from Jan. 1981 to Jul. 2004, were analyzed retrospectively. Results : Forty-four males and 95 females were enrolled. At least one of the autoantibodies for thyroid was positive in 54 cases. The detection rate for AITD was not correlated with sex ratio, control of T1DM, body mass index, age at diagnosis of T1DM, and familial history of thyroid disease, between two groups. In the male group, AITD was more frequently found at a younger age than in the female group. The frequency of AITD was significantly higher in the goiter group without sex differences. In the thyroid disease group, 40 patients(74.0 percent) were euthyroid, seven patients(12.9 percent) were hypothyroid, and seven patients(12.9 percent) were hyperthyroid. Conclusion : We should monitor thyroid function and autoantibodies routinely in T1DM patients who develop goiters, or young boys with T1DM.
