  • During the first half of twentieth century, even though the importance of non-calorie essential micronutrients of 13 vitamins and 17 minerals has been known to alleviate nutritional disorder; the primary objective of agriculture and plant breeding programs has been to increase the productivity and seed yields, and macronutrients of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates made up the bulk of foodstuff which were used primarily as an energy source. In the last decade it has been found that non-essential micronutrients encompass a vast group of phytochemicals including antioxidants that are not strictly required in the diet but when present at sufficient levels work as health-promoting chemicals. Nowadays agricultural crops are grown for health rather than for food or fiber, and modifying the nutritional compositions of plant foods has become an urgent health issue. To ensure an adequate intake of essential vitamins and minerals, and to increase the consumption of health-promoting phytochemicals, the researches on plant secondary metabolism have been made. The attempt to improve nutritional quality of crops has been blocked by a lack of basic knowledge of plant metabolism. The advent of genomics era enabled new approaches to make crossing regardless of species, family, or phylum barriers, and the accumulation in our basic knowledge on plant secondary metabolism during the coming decade would be tremendous. As the major staple crops contain insufficient amount of many micronutrients, fortification strategy will be a necessary practice. Elevated intake of specific vitamins, C, E, and $\beta$-carotene, mineral selenium, antioxidants, and phytochemicals significantly reduces the risk of chronic disease such as cancer, cardiovascular disorder, diabetis, and other degenerative disease associated with aging. As the attempt to improve the nutritional quality of crops requires the basic knowledges on plant metabolism, plant biochemistry, human physiology, and food chemistry, strong interdisplinary collaboration among plant biotechnologists, human nutritionists, and food scientists will be needed. Inhibition of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other degenerative disorder may be the biggest goal facing nutritional plant breeders. But the assumption that simply increasing dietary level of any compound will necessarily improve human health is a dangerous idea because many plant secondary products and dietary contaminants have paradoxical (hermetic) effects. Before biotechnical manipulation is undertaken to elevate or reduce any individual constituent of crops, the contribution of the micronutrient to human health must first be investigated.

  • Regional geology of Chungil mine is composed of Cretaceous biotite granite. Chungil ore deposits are fissure filled quartz veins which developed in Cretaceous biotite granites. Mineralogic and fluid inclusion studies were undertaken to illuminate the origin of the ore deposits. Data gathered from occurrences of ore deposits and mineral paragenesis reveals that there were two major mineralization stage. The first stage is sulfides-quartz stage. The constituents of ore minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrrhotite with minor amount of galena, native Au, Ag, pyrite. The second stage is gangue mineral stage. Gangue minerals are quartz, fluorite and calcite. Homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions in quartz of the first and the second stage ranges from $212^{\circ}C$ to $336^{\circ}C$ and from $154^{\circ}C$ to $355^{\circ}C$ respectively. Homogenization temperature in fluorite and calcite of the second stage ranges from $127^{\circ}C$ to $252^{\circ}C$ and from $129^{\circ}C$ to $158^{\circ}C$ but these data require positive pressure corrections. Fluid inclusions in quartz of the Bongmyeong mine, Jangja the first mine and the second mine show range of homogenization temperature from $178^{\circ}C$ to $330^{\circ}C$, from $185^{\circ}C$ to $354^{\circ}C$ and from $206^{\circ}C$ to 336 respectively. The comparison of the fluid inclusion data, mineralogical component and vein attitude of the three mines with that of Chungil mine indicates that the origin of the deposits above mentioned is elucidated to be formed under similar environment. The compositions of the sphalerite in the first stage range from 16.05 mol.% FeS to 20.36 mol.% FeS.

  • Salinity is a major abiotic stress that adversely affects crop productivity and quality. In this study, the metabolic profile and nutritional composition of rice in response to NaCl were analyzed. The plants were exposed to stressed or unstressed conditions, and their metabolic changes were examined in the shoots, roots, and grains collected at different growth stages. The levels of nutrients and anti-nutrients, including proximates, amino acids, fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, and phytic acid, were also determined for the grains. Application of NaCl significantly decreased the shoot and root growth and induced metabolic alterations at the tillering stage. During the heading stage, only the root metabolites were influenced by NaCl, and no metabolic variations related to salinity were found in the shoot, roots, and grains at the ripening stage. Nutritional analysis of the grain samples revealed that the amounts of linolenic acid and tricosanoic acid were significantly reduced while those of copper, sodium, and phytic acid were enhanced in response to stress. However, except for sodium, those differences were not great. Our results suggest that although NaCl-salinity influences the phenotypic and metabolic profiles of rice shoots and roots at the tillering stage, this impact becomes negligible as tissue development proceeds. This is especially true for the grains. Compositional analysis of the grains indicated that salinity induces some changes in fatty acids, minerals, and anti-nutrients.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the results of acute toxicity testing with Daphnia mag$Na^+$ and Vibrio fischeri and characteristics of ionic substance of treated effluent which contained salt. Acute toxicity with Daphnia mag$Na^+$ and Vibrio fischeri and salinity of 19 samples (4 business categories) were a$Na^+$lysed. Salinity of effluent could explain the fluctuation of toxicity with D. mag$Na^+$ about 66% ~ 91% ($r^2=0.66{\sim}0.91$). The results of acute toxicity testing with V. fischeri of treated effluent (aggregate manufacture facilities) did not indicate toxicity (TU = 0), whereas that of chemical manufacture facilities indicated toxicity. V. fischeri, a candidate test organism, seemed suitable test organism for acute toxicity testing of effluent except high salinity (above 65‰ ~ 70‰) in aggregate manufacture facilities (nonmetalic minerals facilities). The performance of ion composition about treated effluent of surveyed facilities indicated that ion concentration of $Na^+$ (5,740 mg/L) and $Cl^-$ (9,727 mg/L) showed high level among 6 major ions ($Na^+$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $Cl^-$) in effluent of nonmetalic minerals facilities. In addition, Clion seemed to influence the D. magna survival rather than $Na^+$ ion.

  • Focused ion beam (FIB) technique is widely used in the precise preparation of thin slices for the transmission electron microscopic (TEM) observation of target area of the minerals and geological materials. However, structural damages and artifacts by the Ga ion beam as well as electron beam damage are major difficulties in the TEM analyses. TEM analyses of the mineral samples showed the amorphization of quartz and feldspar, curtain effect, and Ga contamination, particularly near the grain edges and relatively thin regions. Although the ion beam damage could be much reduced by the improved procedures including the adjustment of the acceleration voltage and current, the ion beam damage and contamination are likely inevitable, thus requiring careful interpretation of the micro-structural and micro-chemical features observed by TEM analyses.

  • Mineralogical characterization was performed for the mineral assemblages precipitated at the boundary between limestone bedrock and bat guano deposits in the Gossi Cave, Korea. Francoanellite, taranakite, ardealite, brushite and monetite are observed as phosphate minerals and gypsum and a small amount of barite as sulfate minerals in the guano deposits. With the increase of depth, phosphates are changed as following sequence: taranakite ${\rightarrow}$ francoanellite ${\rightarrow}$ ardealite ${\rightarrow}$ brushite ${\rightarrow}$ monetite. This sequence indicates that the major parameters controlling the physico-chemical conditions under which these mineral assemblages were deposited are pH and relative humidity.

  • A large number of gold and/or silver-bearing quartz veins occur in or near Mesozoic granite batholith elongated in a NE-SW direction within the Chungcheong Province. Precambrian schists and gneisses, and Jurassic and Cretaceous granitic rocks serve as hosts for gold and/or silver deposits. On the basis of Ag/Au total production and ore grade ratio, 15 mines may be divided into three major groups: gold-dominant deposits, gold-silver deposits, and silver-dominant deposits. The chemical composition of electrum from skarn deposit (Geodo mine), alaskite-type deposit (Geumjeong mine) and 15 vein deposits was summarized. It was found that the Au content of electrum for vein deposits ranging from 5.2 to 86.5 is lower than that for skarn and alaskite deposits. Among 15 vein deposits, the composition of electrum associated with pyrrhotite is relatively high and has a narrow range of 40.8 to 86.5 atomic % Au, but the Au content of electrum with pyrite is in range of 5.2 to 82.8 atomic %, and is clearly lower than that with pyrrhotite. The grouping of ages for these mines indicates that gold and/or silver mineralizations occurred during two periods in the Mesozoic. Daebo igneous activities are restricted to gold mineralization in the range of 158 to 133 Ma, whereas Bulgugsa igneous activities are related to gold and/or silver mineralization ranging from 108 to 71 Ma. Generally speaking, Jurassic gold-dominant veins have many common characteristics; notably prominent association with pegmatites, simply massive vein morphology, high fineness in the ore concentrates, rarity of silver minerals, and a distinctively simple mineralogy, including sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and/or pyrite. Although individual deposits exhibit widely differing diversity, Cretaceous gold-silver and silver-dominant veins are characterized by features such as complex vein, low to medium fineness in the ore concentrates and abundance of silver minerals including Ag sulfosalts, Ag sulfides, Ag tellurides and native silver.

  • Relnoval of ammonia from aqueous solutions has been studied with zeolite and bentonite minerals. Zeolite and bentonite powder were supplied by a domestic company and used as delivered without further purification. The aqueous pH was found to increase by addition of zeolite or bentonite up to pH 8.5 from initial pH of 5.5∼5.7. From the C.E.C. measurement by ammonium acetate leaching method, the values of C.E.C. of zeolite and bentonite sample were observed to be 129.7 meq/100 gr and 65.1 meq/100 gr, respectively and Na+ ion accounted for the major part of total C.E.C. in both cases. In the removal of ammonia with zeolite and bentonite, physical adsorption of ammonium ion onto minerals was believed to contribute to the removal of it as well as the intrinsic cation exchange reaction. Finally, zeolite was found to be superior to bentonite in the removal of ammonia from aqueous solutions.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify food sources for major minerals such as calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), sodium (Na) and potassium (K), and to evaluate the relationship between dietary intake of these minerals and serum lipids in healthy Korean adults. A total of 132 healthy men and women completed a physical examination and dietary record and provided blood samples for lipid profile analysis. Results showed the following daily average mineral intakes: 373.4 mg of calcium, 806.0 mg of phosphorous, 3685.8 mg of sodium, and 1938.3 mg of potassium. The calcium-to-phosphorus and sodium-to-potassium ratio was about 0.5 and 2.0, respectively. The primary sources for each mineral were: vegetables (24.9%) and fishes (19.0%) for calcium, grains (31.4%) for phosphorus, seasonings (41.6%) and vegetables (27.0%) for sodium, and vegetables (30.6%) and grains (18.5%) for potassium. The correlation analysis, which has been adjusted for age, gender, total food consumption, and energy intake, showed significantly positive correlations between Ca/P and serum HDL cholesterol levels, between Na intake and the level of serum total cholesterol, and between Na/K and the level of serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Our data indicates that the level of mineral consumption partially contributes to serum lipid profiles and that a diet consisting of a low Ca/P ratio and a high Na/K ratio may have negative impacts on lipid metabolism.
