  • Various earth observation satellites need to provide accurate and high-quality data after launch. To maintain and enhance the quality of satellite data, it is crucial to employ a cross-calibration process that accounts for differences in sensor characteristics, such as the spectral band adjustment factor (SBAF). In this study, we utilized Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A satellite imagery collected from desert sites in Libya4, Algeria3, and Mauritania2 among pseudo-invariant calibration sites to calculate and apply SBAF, thereby compensating the uncertainties arising from variations in bandwidths. We quantitatively compared the reflectance differences based on the similarity of bandwidths, including Blue, Green, Red, and both the near-infrared (NIR) narrow, and NIR bands of Sentinel-2A. Following the application of SBAF, significant results with reflectance differences of approximately 1% or less were observed for all bands except NIR. In the case of the Sentinel-2A NIR band, it exhibited a significantly larger bandwidth difference compared to the NIR narrow band. However, after applying SBAF, the reflectance difference fell within the acceptable error range (5%) of 1-2%. It indicates that SBAF can be applied even when there is a substantial difference in the bandwidths of the two sensors, particularly in situations where satellite utilization is limited. Therefore, it was determined that SBAF could be applied even when the bandwidth difference between the two sensors is large in a situation where satellite utilization is limited. It is expected to be helpful in research utilizing the quality and continuity of satellite data.

  • The Purpose of this study is to identify important factors in choosing liner shipping companies using the AHP. The Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP), introduced by Satty T. L. in 1970, is a decision technique the has been applied to private and public sectors and to group decision problems. This paper will demonstrate the level of importance in 4 major factors: cost, service, transportation and promotion. In detail, the 4 major factors are divided into 14 sub-factors. In the present research, various service attributes for shipping lines were selected from previous studies and the observed data for 4 main service attributes were collected through a questionnaire survey from 26 concerned international freight forwarder experts. The conclusion of this study is as follows. First, it is found that the cost factor is the most important factor among the 4 main service attributes. It is very obvious that the cost factor directly affects the choosing the liner shipping company by international freight forwarders. Second, it is found that the second important factor in choosing the liner shipping company is the transportation factor and the third is the service factor. The promotion factor is underestimated, comparatively speaking. With the ever-increasing competition, liner shipping companies will need to study and understand the selection criteria of their clients(international freight forwarder), and apply the results to their daily and long-terms operations. In particular, liner shipping companies should establish a system to identify and sort the various selection criteria used by international freight forwarding companies.

  • Bacillus Anthracis is the causative agent of anthrax. The major virulence factors are a poly-D glutamic acid capsule and three-protein component exotoxin, which is collectively known as anthrax toxin, protective antigen (PA, 83 kDa), lethal factor (LF, 90 kDa), and edema factor (EF, 89 kDa). These three proteins individually have no known toxic activities, but in combination with PA form two toxins (lethal toxin and edema toxin), causing different pathogenic responses in animals and cultured cells. However, it remains to be elucidated for pathogenic mechanism of anthrax toxin. In this study, we constructed toxin component in bacterial overexpression system and purified the native toxin from Bacillus anthracis delta sterne F32 using FPLC system. Recombinant toxin showed high homogeneity and rapid purification processes. Also, this recombinant toxin was comparable to B. anthracis native toxin in terms of cytotoxic effects on cultured cell lines.

  • It has been reported that cracks in mechanical joints is generally under mixed-mode and there is critical inclined angle at which mode I stress intensity factor becomes maximum. The crack propagates in arbitrary direction and thus the prediction of crack growth path is needed to provide against crack propagation or examine safety. In order to evaluate the fatigue life of cracks in mechanical joints, horizontal crack normal to the applied load and located on minimum cross section is major concern but critical inclined crack must also be considered. In this paper mixed-mode fatigue crack growth test is performed far horizontal crack and critical inclined crack in mechanical joints. Fatigue crack growth path is predicted by maximum tangential stress criterion using stress intensity factor obtained from weight function method, and fatigue crack growth rates of horizontal and inclined crack are compared.

  • IgA is the predominant immunoglobulin isotype in mucosal secretions(1). It has been reported that a population of Peyer's patch T cells can selectively induce IgM bearing B cells to switch to surface IgA bearing B cells(2,3). Further, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-6 alone and in combination, can significantly influence murine IgA B cell differentiation in vitro(4-7). However, it remains an open question which cytokines have a major role in class switching to the IgA isotype. Recently, it has been reported that transforming growth factor .betha.1(TGF .betha.1) alone, or in combination with IL-2 increases IgA secretion by LPS-activated surface IgA negative (sIgA$\^$-/) murine spleen B cells while concurrently downregulating IgM and IgG secretion by such cells(8-11). In the present study, limiting dilution analysis was used to demonstrate, at the clonal level, that TGF .betha.1 has siginificant activity as an IgA isotype switch factor.

  • The conventional SLT(Shear Lag Theory) which has been proven that it can not provide sufficiently accurate strengthening predictions in elastic regime when the fiber aspect ratio is small. This paper is an extented work to improve it by modifying the load transfer mechanism called NSLT(New Shear Lag Theory), which takes into account the stress transfer across the fiber ends and the SCF(Stress Concentration Factor) that exists in the matrix regions near the fiber ends. The key point of the model development is to determine the major controlling factor among the material and geometrical coefficients. It is found that the most affecting factor is the fiber/matrix elastic modulus ratio. It is also found that the proposed model gives a good result that has the capability to correctly predict the elastic properties such as interfacial shear stresses and local stress variations in the small fiber aspect ratio regime.

  • Transcription factors govern diverse aspects of cell growth and differentiation as major switches of gene expression. Etv5, a member of the E26 transformation-specific family of transcription factors, has many stories to share when it comes to reproduction. Etv5 deficient mice show complex infertility phenotypes both in males and females. In males, the infertility phenotype exhibited by Etv5 deficiency is sexually dimorphic, and it involves both somatic cells and germ cells. In $Etv5^{-/-}$ female mice, the problem is more complicated by hormonal involvement. This review synthesizes old and new information on this versatile transcription factor-from the inadvertent discovery of its role in the testes to its newly discovered role in maintaining spermatogonial stem cells.
