This paper proposes a method for estimating the location of a magnetized tip that is inside a non-transparent space or body by using arrayed giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensors. In general, an object located in such an opaque space can be detected using X-rays, magnetic fields, ultra-sonic sensors, etc., depending on its characteristics. X-ray is mostly used for medical purposes but frequent exposure to it could cause harm to patients as well as doctors. In this study, how well a GMR sensor is applicable instead of an X-ray is investigated. The sensor's voltage output is experimentally fitted to distance with a relationship of 3rd degree polynomial. To detect a small magnetized tip with 900 Oe inside a human body, a 2×2 arrayed GMR sensor and a location estimation algorithm based on information acquired from four sensors is developed. Evaluation tests show that the suggested method is applicable to limited cases with a distance less than 33-55 mm, and the location of a magnet tip is estimated relatively well with an error less than 1.5 mm.
With the three dimensional magnetic field measuring system dealt with in this paper, accurate measurements and analyses of extremely low frequency(ELF) magnetic fields caused by starting and/or operating electric devices and power installations can be conducted. To obtain high performance for lower frequency and spatial components without any distortion, the measuring system is designed as three dimensionally including the multiturn loop-type magnetic field sensors, differential amplifiers and active integrators. As the results of calibration experiments, the frequency response characteristics of the measuring system range from 8[Hz] to about 53[kHz] for each direction of x, y, z axes, and the response sensitivities are 9.54, 9.21, $10.89[mV/{\mu}T]$, respectively. The actual survey experiments by using an oscillating impulse current generator confirm a reliability of the proposed measuring system. Also, through the other experiments by using small-sized induction motors, the magnetic field intensities when starting and steady-state operating mark 15.8, $8.61[{\mu}T]$ as maximum value, respectively. And those intensities decrease steeply according as the measuring distance increases.
To observe the effect of excitation coil pitch on the micro fluxgate magnetic sensor, two sensors are fabricated using multi layer board process and the pitch distance of excitation coil are $260\;{\mu}m$ and $520\;{\mu}m$, respectively. The fluxgate sensor consists of five PCB stack layers including one layer of magnetic core and four layers of excitation and pick-up coils. The center layer as magnetic core is made of a Co-based amorphous magnetic ribbon with extremely high DC permeability of ${\sim}100,000$ and has a rectangular-ring shape to minimize the magnetic flux leakage. Four outer layers as excitation and pick-up coils have a planar solenoid structure and are made of copper foil. In case of the fluxgate sensor having the excitation coil pitch of $260\;{\mu}m$, excellent linear response over the range of $-100\;{\mu}T$ to $+100\;{\mu}T$ is obtained with sensitivity of 780 V/T at excitation sine wave of $3V_{p_p}$ and 360 kHz. The chip size of the fabricated sensing element is $7.3\;{\times}\;5.7\;mm^2$. The very low power consumption of ${\sim}8\;mW$ is measured. This magnetic sensor is very useful for various applications such as: portable navigation systems, telematics, VR game and so on.
The real-time enrichment and detection of pathogens are serious issues and rapidly evolving field of research because of the ability of these pathogens to cause infectious diseases. In general, bacterial detection is accomplished by conventional colony counting or by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) after DNA extraction. As colony counting requires considerable time to cultivate, PCR is an attractive method for rapid detection. A small number of pathogens can cause diseases. Hence, a pretreatment process, such as enrichment is essential for detecting bacteria in an actual environment. Thus, in this study, we developed a microfluidic chip capable of performing rapid enrichment of bacteria and the extraction of their genes. A lectin, i.e., Concanavalin A (ConA), which shows binding affinity to the surface of most bacteria, was coated on the surface of magnetic particles to nonspecifically capture bacteria. It was subsequently concentrated through magnetic forces in a microfluidic channel. To lyse the captured bacteria, magnetic particles were irradiated by a wavelength of 532nm. The photo-thermal effect on the particles was sufficient for extracting DNA, which was consequently utilized for the identification of bacteria. Our device will help monitor the existence of bacteria in various environmental situations such as water, air, and soil.

Recently, as various wearable devices and IoT technologies have emerged and been applied to real applications, various sensors have been developed to satisfy their purposes and applied. In even In medical applications, IoT technologies have been applied gradually, and particularly, magnets and magnetic sensors have already been playing an important role in the medical industry. In wrist rehabilitation, this kind of sensor technology has enabled us to easily and conveniently measure wrist movement and gestures because there are no tangled lines required between the magnet and sensor. However, one of the drawbacks is that nonlinear output is generated because of the characteristics of a magnetic field. Also, the movement of the wrist joint involves small bones, and so it is not easy to simply model the movement. In order to resolve these issues and accurately measure sensor data, a calibration procedure is inevitable in the measurement. Thus, this paper proposes a practical model and simple calibration methods for measuring the distance between a magnet and a magnetic sensor.
$AlFe_2B_2$ produced by using a conventional arc melter has a ferromagnetic material with a Curie temperature ($T_C$) of around 300 K, but the arc-melt generates paramagnetic $Al_{13}Fe_4$ impurities during the synthesis of $AlFe_2B_2$. Impurities are brought to cause a decrease in magnetocaloric effects (MCEs). To investigate the effects of $Al_{13}Fe_4$ impurities on MCEs, we prepared and compared ascast and acid-treated samples, where the acid treatment was performed to remove the $Al_{13}Fe_4$ impurities. For the structural analysis, powder X-ray diffraction was carried out, and the measured data were subjected to a Rietveld refinement. The presence of $Al_{13}Fe_4$ impurities in the as-cast sample was observed in the phase analysis measurements. Magnetic properties were investigated by using Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) measurements for the as-cast and the acid-treated $AlFe_2B_2$ samples. From isothermal magnetization measurements, Arrott plots were obtained showing that the transition of $AlFe_2B_2$ has a second-order magnetic phase transition (SOMT). The $T_C$ and the saturation magnetization increased for the acid-treated sample due to removal of the paramagnetic impurities. As a consequence, the magnetic entropy change ($-{\Delta}S$) increased in the pure $AlFe_2B_2$ samples, but the full width at half maximum in the plot of $-{\Delta}S$ vs. T decreased due to the absence of impurities.
This paper describes the characteristics of Si Hall sensors fabricated on a SOI(Si-on-insulator} structure, in which the SOI structure was forrmed by SDB(Si-wafer direct bonding) technology. The Hall voltage and the sensitivity of implemented Si Hall devices show good linearity with respect to the applied magnetic flux density and supplied current. The product sensitivity of the SDB SOI Hall device is average $600V/A{\cdot}T$. In the temperature range of 25 to $300^{\circ}C$, the shifts of TCO(Temperature Coefficient of the Offset Voltage) and TCS(Temperature Coefficient of the product Sensitivity) are less than ${\pm}6.7{\times}10^{-3}/^{\circ}C$ and ${\pm}8.2{\times}10^{-4}/^{\circ}C$, respectively. From these results, Si Hall sensors using the SOI structure presented here are very suitable for high-temperature operation.
In industry AGV's(automated guided vehicles) that can detect and follow guidelines drawn on the factory floor using magnetic or optical sensors are widely used. However, such AGV's without preview capability cannot effectively avoid collision with obstacles that may occasionally pass through the guideline. Furthermore, without preview information, they consume much energy at the right angle corners as they have to make sudden directional change. Also, the risk of dropping payloads increases in such situations. In this study, infrared preview sensors were adopted to a mobile robot for detecting not only the current position but also the forward position of the guideline and the preview control technique was applied to optimally control the mobile robot's motion using the information from the infrared preview sensors. Then the effectiveness of this approach was investigated through a series of experiments. The experimental result shows that the proposed approach is effective for safety enhancement as well as for better efficiency.

Using thermal oxide SiO$_2$ as a dielectrical isolation layer, SOI Hall sensors without pn junction isolation have been fabricated on Si/SiO$_2$/Si structures. The SOI structure was formed by SDB (Si- wafer direct bonding) technology. The Hall voltage and the sensitivity of Si Hall devices implemented on the SDB SOI structure show good linearity with respect to the appled magnetic flux density and supplied current. The product sensitivity of the SDB SOI Hall device is average 600V/V.T. In the trmperature range of 25 to 300$^{\circ}C$, the shifts of TCO(Temperature Coefficient of the Offset Voltage) and TCS(Temperature Coefficient of the Product Sensitivity) are less than ${\pm}$ 6.7x10$\^$-3/ C and ${\pm}$8.2x10$\^$04/$^{\circ}C$, respectively. These results indicate that the SDB SOI structure has potential for the development of Hall sensors with a high-sensitivity and high-temperature operation.

Electrostatic suspension offers an advantage of directly suspending various materials such as conductive materials, semiconductors and dielectric materials without any mechanical contacts. This is a specific feature compared with electromagnetic suspension which can suspend only ferro-magnetic material. In general, the electrostatic suspension systems require position sensors for stabilizing the suspended object. Therefore, a lot of displacement sensors and a switching circuit are required for moving the object through a long distance. In order to circumvent this problem, this paper proposes a self-sensing method which can provide the gap displacement between electrodes and suspended object without external sensors. Moreover a simple on-off controller is presented for stabilization. Experimental validation of the proposed scheme has been performed through the successful levitation of a 4-inch silicon wafer.
