  • Magnetic properties of bio-magnetic molecule ferritin have been investigated. Two ferritin samples were synthesized under different magnetic fields, 0 and 9.4 T, respectively. This work is focused on the influence of magnetic field on biomineralization process. While magnetization vs. temperature (M-T) data of both samples measured at 1000 Oe are almost identical except for low temperature region (T < 6 K), magnetization vs. field (M-H) data show noticeable difference. From an analysis of M-H data by using a modified Langevin function, we could extract the saturation magnetization $m_0$(T), the effective magnetic moment ${\mu}_{eff}$(T) and the linear susceptibility x(T). The difference between the samples is most prominent in the x(T), whereby the x(T) of the sample prepared at 9.4 T is 1.7 times bigger than that of the other. In addition, from hysteresis and relaxation measurements, we found the sample prepared at 9.4 T showed strikingly smaller coercivity and slower relaxation.

  • Experimental methods for making quantitative measurements of velocity fields in non-Newtonian fluids are reviewed. Techniques based on light scattering spectroscopy - laser Doppler velocimetry and homodyne light scattering spectroscopy, techniques based on imaging the displacement of markers - including particle image velocimetry and molecular tagging velocimetry, and techniques based on nuclear magnetic resonance imaging are discussed. The special advantages and disadvantages of each method are summarized, and their applications to non-Newtonian flows are briefly reviewed. Example data from each technique are also included.

  • There has been considerable interest in recent years in field-responsive suspensions, which are of some importance in industry in many different applications. The microstructure of these materials is a significant issue which can be probed by rheological measurements. In this study, measurements were made of a magnetorheological fluid (MRF) under steady and oscillatory shear flow, with and without a magnetic field. Mathematical inversion was used to derive the relaxation time spectrum of the MRF from oscillatory shear data. Experimental evidence is presented of the gel-like properties of this MRF.

  • Ferrite tile absorber is of great concern for the application to anechoic chambers due to the growing demand of EMI or EMC measurements. This paper investigates the magnetic, dielectric and microwave absorbing properties of a Ni-An ferrite for the purpose. A design chart was constructed with the solutions of impedance-matching equation in the radio frequencies (30 MHz - 1 GHz). The material parameters for zero-reflection are predicted from the chart. The magnetic and dielectric properties of sintered Ni-Zn ferrite is found to be well suited for this requirements. A superior microwave absorbing properties (frequency band and absorber thickness) of the samples are demonstrated.

  • In this paper, a new type of step motor with two degree of mechanical freedom, which is named rotary-Linear Step Motor(RLSM), is presented. Its rotor axis can perform linear and rotary motions either separately or simultaneously. This paper discribes the design of RLSM using finite element method in which the magnetic saturation effect of the iron core is taken into account. The design parameters such as torques, forces and inductances are obtained from the computed magnetic vector potentials. A new type of Rotary-Linear Step Motor was constructed. The calculated parameters agree well with measurements.

  • A statistical analysis for detecting deviations from normal magnetic field intensities, caused by the introduction of magnetite materials into man-made fissures and cracks at subsurface levels is presented. For detecting such deviations it turns out the comparison of two different field measurements measured at two different sites far from each other is more efficient than the study of the only measurement by the univariate and bivariate time series analysis.

  • The $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ structure has been fluorinated by a gas phase exchange technique. The ${^19}F$NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) measurements on a fluorinated sample gave superconducting energy gap of $2\Delta=4.6kT_c$.

  • We have measured the magnetization of Ni/Ag(Ni at %)/Ni (50$\AA$/30 $\AA$/50 $\AA$) trilayered films including Ni atoms inserted in non-magnetic Ag spacer. The magnetization as a function of applied field at 5 K and as a function of temperature at 100 Oe were investigated respectively using SQUID magnetometer. In these measurements peaks of magnetization at some critical temperatures were observed in all the samples. The antiferromagnetic coupling energy between neighboring Ni layers showed oscillatory behaviors according to the amounts of the Ni atoms inserted in Ag spacer. Loose spin model suggested by slonczews야 was used to explain such results.

  • Several dioxovanadate (V) complexes are synthesized and studied by solution and solid-state 51V NMR spectroscopy. In the results, large 51V chemical shift anisotropy ({{{{ DELTA delta }}a = -800 ∼720 ppm) and quadrupole coupling (e2q /h = 7.50 ∼ 9.16 MHz) were observed in the solid-state complexes. The isotropic chemical shifts of the solid samples are very close to the values obtained from solution measurements.

  • Chemical shift perturbation (CSP) is a simple NMR technique for studying binding of a protein to various ligands. CSP is the only technique that can directly provide both a value for the dissociation constant and a binding site from the same set of measurements. To accurately analyze the CSP data, the exact binding mode such as multiple binding, should be carefully considered. In this review, we analyzed systematically the CSP data with multiple modes. This analysis might provide insight into the mechanism on how proteins selectively recognize their target ligands to achieve the biological function.
